First and foremost, get the idea of "gay", "straight" and "bi" out of your head. Ancient history lacked the close definitions or the ridiculous prejudices that we do. It's heavily implied in the New Testament, particularly in John, that the "beloved disciple" shared an intimidate bond with the Messiah which is insinuated to be romantic; that Jesus is "in love with" John, using language far stronger than that which simply describes his love for all men.

There are also scholars that heavily maintain that Jesus' sexuality is further questioned in the gospel of Mark - particularly the so called "Secret Gospel" where it is strongly implied that Jesus took a young, male student into his bed, not a rare concept in Ye Olde World, as I said - your modern preconceptions will really stunt your reading of historic literature.

Of course there are just as many scholars who will use the bible to say that Jesus was one thing, in this instance heterosexual, as he is another (gay) and they'll all have their own bias. What's important to remember, though, is that the Bible is not the word of God. The bible is the word of man. Passed down like the greatest game of Chinese Whispers for decades and generations before it was even committed to text.

And from there? Translated and rewritten endless times, always by those in power or those with some agenda.

Whether or not Jesus was gay or bisexual by contemporary standards is irrelevant. His sexuality has no baring on the central messages that pour from the bible, regardless of whose translations you read. And that is to forgive and to love your neighbour, to be good to one another, to not prejudge each other, to not steal and to not kill each other and to have faith not only that those who are good will be rewarded but faith in each other as people.

I love faith, everyone's faith, I hate religion and I hate the bible. Because people get so attached and so literal to it's meaning, start wars over it, crusades, commit killings in the ultimate irony of it's name.

If your God exists, if any God exists, do we really mean to insult him by implying he's as ignorant, as stupid, as narrow minded and as prejudiced as the people that dwell on his Earth? Do we really mean to imply that a being of such magnificence and incomprehensible intelligence would curse a soul to damnation, a soul that lived the most giving and compassionate life, because of his sexual preference? Or even because he didn't believe enough? Rubbish.

Your bible and your text and rigorous laws of your religion are written by centuries of bigots to justify their own beliefs. Don't sully God's name with their ignorance.

shame.

Religion would be far more exciting if the head honcho was usually a petty minded, evil bloke/woman that tortured everyone and occasionally started talking of peace, wearing sandals, getting pissed and nailed to a piece of wood.

christ.

No one reacted to Jimmy Carr calling jesus gay on last weeks argumental, but now elton john has said it everyones expecting a thermonuclear fallout from fox news and the rednecks.

But still hanging around with 12 blokes and wearing sandals. Need i say more.

That's because no one watches Argumental. EVERYONE listens to Elton.

I thought Jesus was the Son of God? Its all very confusing

The father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Holy Trinity and all that. Aren't they all one? Jesus was God's representation on earth, not his literal son. I think. I'm dragging up memories from RE lessons over ten years ago.

Excellent post. Best on any of these religion based threads for ages.

The number of people who forget the Bible, Talmud and Koran were written by men between 1500 and 3000 years ago is simply staggering. Not only does that fail to take into account the wildly different social norms of the Middle East before Christianity, it fails to take into account the difficult circumstances in which these men lived. The Jews were subjected to slavery in Ancient Egypt and later escaped, living for several years in the deserts and plains of what would now be Israel and Syria.

The fact is that a lot of the doctrines and commandments within are based on practicality as much as spirituality. The Bible forbade 'men lying with men as they do a woman' because homosexuality was perceived to be more likely to spread disease. Bare in mind that passage is in Leviticus which pre-dates Christ by hundreds of years and was addressed to exiled Jews without access to good medicine, and the practicality of it becomes clear.

It was essentially a piece of health legislation that has now been taken by homophobes to justify their bigotry with ancient doctrine. Same with sex outside marriage, monogamy minimised the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and was strongly encouraged as a result. Promiscuity became a thing of immorality without anyone really knowing why it had been decided to be in the first place.

Another aspect was declaring the consumption of shellfish an 'abomination'. Long discarded by most Christians, it's still in place in Judaism and alludes to the fact that shellfish can cause illness when improperly cooked whereas fish with scales was less likely to do so. Many of the 'abominations' were decided in order to preserve a nomadic tribe on the run, they were not intended to cause bigotry over 2000 years later as they have. Just as we wouldn't accept ancient Greek teachings that semen comes from the spinal cord, why should we accept equally ancient teachings made in difficult circumstances that homosexuality and extra-marital sex are evil and immoral?

Is calling him gay any worse than saying all religions are a crock of shit?

May as well call Santa 'gay' because he doesn't exist either.

And the Easter Bunny is 'bi'.

Exactly what I was going to say :thumbup:lol

I really, really strongly resisted the urge to paragraph that, Bilo. You beat me to it, lol.

lol

I read it after posting and thought it looked a bit unwieldy so chopped it up a bit. Ease of reading and all that.

In my RE lessons we just drew pictures of fishing boats from what I remember.

I agree with Elton if I'm honest. Jesus was blatantly a huge poo-pushing bum-bandit and his mother wasn't a virgin either 'cos she clearly got repeatedly ragged by Big Jo. That's if he actually existed in the first place, anyway.

Elton John has probably wound up millions of people in the world by this statement.

As an agnostic, I don't really know if there is a God or if Jesus walked this earth. But to claim he was gay is very extreme. The bible states that Jesus had an intimate relationship with Mary Magdalene, She is portrayed that Jesus loved her more than his disciples. Some people also claim that Mary Magdalene was a wife to Jesus. The bible is a account of different peoples views and beliefs. For Example When Jesus was crucified; Matthew said there was an earthquake, The Synoptic Gospels tell of the darkening of the sky from twelve until three that afternoon, and Matthew also said that the earth broke open and a number of righteous dead people rose out of the grave and he saw them going into Jerusalem.

The bible is full of different views and opinions, just like everyday life is.

Faith is an excellent thing to have, Be it faith in yourself or faith in Jesus. My Grandad had faith in Jesus, he was a religious man, He went to church every sunday. He died of stomach/skin cancer just over a month ago, His faith kept him going right until the end, He should have died in pain. But about a week before his death, He gathered us all round and told us, "He had been touched by Jesus" It seems as if Jesus kept him safe from a painful death. My grandad just fell asleep. As I've said before, This should never have happened. My Great Uncles and Aunts who are firm believers in God and Jesus, Just happened to that day, hours before his death, Get the idea that they must see him, and that it was going to happen. So they went to see him that day. His time and Death also coincided with the day he was baptised, 50 years ago. Which is a really freaky thing, Sounds far-fetched too.

We shouldn't mock NSSL's faith. We shouldn't mock anyones beliefs in Religion. Just because you don't believe the same things as NSSL. There isn't any need to mock his beliefs in God/Jesus. It's extremely idiotic of Elton John to claim that Jesus was gay. It must of angered people throughout the world.

We shouldnt mock anyones beliefs but Elton isnt entitled to his? Is that what youre saying? Why is it idiotic? None of us can prove it one way or another, IF he did exist, which is debatable in itself?

Was thinking about this after I posted. I believe it was silly of him to go public about it. Maybe of kept it to himself?

Took me 25minutes to write that post. Waste of time.
