Jordan Posted 13 June 2010 Posted 13 June 2010 I know we've only played seven games, so this might be too small of a sample size... ...but even though the players haven't been finding the back of the net as much as they were expected to, is anybody else really pleased with the attitude in which these games have been played and officiated, or is it just me? Sure, there have been a few cynical and stupid fouls that have seen the refs pull out a few red cards (not to mention a few terrible blunders that have had huge effects on the outcomes of a few games), so I won't say that this World Cup has given us the highest-quality football so far. However, for the most part, the tackling has been hard and fair, and THERE'S BEEN NO DIVING, CHEATING, PLAYERS MOBBING THE REF AFTER EVERY FOUL... Hallelujah! Also, in World Cups past (actually, nearly every major competition, for that matter), there always tend to be a whole bunch of referee decisions that turn out to be completely horrible and/or unnecessarily controversial. Through the first seven games, though, IMO the quality of refereeing has been of the highest caliber. It's probably a sad condemnation of football when playing fairly and not making terrible calls are both noteworthy, but this is so refereshing to see. The game is just so much more enjoyable without all the cheating and petulance that's been endemic in football. All that's been missing is just a goal or two. For once, I can say, "Bravo, FIFA."
Koke Posted 13 June 2010 Posted 13 June 2010 The officiating is the only positive thing thus far in this WC. Impressed by the high standard by the ref. So credit where it's due.

The ref in the Uruguay v France match was ridiculously good. He got EVERYTHING right. Thought the ref in the England game was a little OTT. Too many cards.
dandannieldanok Posted 13 June 2010 Posted 13 June 2010 Eh?.....were you not watching Clint Demspey last night, milked fouls all night long.
Jordan Posted 13 June 2010 Author Posted 13 June 2010 Eh?.....were you not watching Clint Demspey last night, milked fouls all night long. I thought that game was called a little tighter than most so far, but yes, I watched Clint Dempsey and no, I didn't think he was noticeably a little too light on his feet.
Corky Posted 13 June 2010 Posted 13 June 2010 The overall officiating has been very good thus far, hasn't been a decision or card where I thought "that's completely wrong". Some marginals but no major as yet. There seems to be a decent spirit about the whole thing.
Guest Bilo Posted 13 June 2010 Posted 13 June 2010 Agree with comments made about the ref in the France game. He may actually have been the best man on the pitch. It's great to see the high quality officiating that's been shown so far and hopefully it'll continue. Doubt it'll keep to the same high standards when Howard Webb steps onto the field though.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 13 June 2010 Posted 13 June 2010 2 Germans got booked for diving earlier, so much for fair play.
shen Posted 13 June 2010 Posted 13 June 2010 2 Germans got booked for diving earlier, so much for fair play. It sends out a clear message though doesn't it? Well done to the ref for punishing them. They won't be doing it again, knowing they'll risk suspension.
Jordan Posted 14 June 2010 Author Posted 14 June 2010 Loved the ref booking Oezil (?) and Cacau for the dives. Those were hitherto the two most blatant diving attempts at the WC and as shen said, that should send a message to the other teams and refs that "simulation" will not be tolerated. Three games and three red cards today. FIFA always tells the refs to clamp down on some sort of infringement or another before the World Cup, so the tournament is always a card-fest. The first two today were definitely well-deserved after some stupid yellow card-worthy infractions (I think we've now seen two subs come on and get dismissed after picking up two yellows). The third, Cahill's, was a bit more iffy. There wasn't any malice involved in the tackle--he even looked like he was trying to pull back--but it was definitely clumsy and dangerous.
MC Prussian Posted 14 June 2010 Posted 14 June 2010 The officiating at this year's World Cup is indeed outstanding. I have hardly seen so many games in succession where the referees had it almost entirely spot on. The standard is really high and the first few games set out a clear signal to all wanna-be divers and nasty foulers (are you reading this, Tim Cahill). There have already been a few players booked twice in a game and sent off so far and those foolish players were totally flabbergasted by the (correct) decision, at least that's what it looked like on TV - Algeria's Ghezzal or Uruguay's Lodeiro spring to mind, coming on as a substitute and earning two yellows within a quarter of an hour for two silly misconducts in succession.
Fosse Boy Posted 21 June 2010 Posted 21 June 2010 I take all of this back. Sigh. It was always bound to happen.
CosbehFox Posted 21 June 2010 Posted 21 June 2010 Some of the playacting is disgraceful. Lightest tap and it's the sniper act. Brazil are the worse for it too.
