Best indian restaurant in Leicester?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I'm not sure if this thread has been done before (if it has, then sincere apologies), but I'd love to get the feelers on the best Indian restaurants in Leicester..

personally I have never had a bad meal ever at the excellent Marten Inn or Khyber restaurant. helps that they cater for veggies, too!

I don't care if it's upmarket or cheap and cheerful, be great to see where everyone prefers for their fix of Indian cuisine.

Mirch Masala in Leicester.

Raitha's in Leicestershire (Kibworth).

I like Mirch. Didn't think too much to Raitha's, it was spookily almost exactly the *same* as Spice Of India in syston..

Have you been to sakoni's recently? It was legendary when it opened but now it's like a half cooked operation with very random opening times and they keep the same buffet for dinner that they had for lunch..shame as i enjoyed sakoni's

Not in a long time to be honest with you.

Shimla Pinks (London Rd) - Not your traditional type of indian but the dishes are very good. They mix things up a little.

Simla (Hinckley) - Very good restuarant. Quality of service is brilliant. Food - never disappointed.

Akash (London Rd) - Average

The Tiffin (London Rd) - Very good but expensive.

Jamals Balti Hut (Nboro Road) - Very poor - Avoid

It's a shame Mirch isn't more than a room with some tables and chairs - it's not exactly the place you'd go for a nice meal, more for food when you're in town already. But my god, the food is really in a league of its own and not just the indian food

Tiffin

Whenever I came back to Leicester, I would always go to the Tiffin. however, I think Swatlands in Oadby is a good alternative. Cam is the owner, very friendly and will invariably treat me to a nice Scotch after dinner.

Sands in Glenfield. I'm a veggie and so is my lady. Cater very well for us and the food is fab. I used to like Friends on Belgrave Road but the owners sold out and it's gone down hill. Passage to India in Anstey is a good take away.

I'd like to second this

Shit then?

The Taraj in Syston is as good as anywhere.

All my old favourites have gone to shit.

Vivek turned into the spicy haandi (not too bad, just not the same)

Namaste wasn't very nice last time I went

Mem saab was disgusting when me and the mrs went a week or so ago, and you pay through the nose!

Forgot about Spice 45 - Very good there.

The Heritage in Narborough also - The service is appalling and the food isnt much better.

I'm not living in Leicester any more so don't get to try out as many Indian restaurants as I used to. :(

When I do, though, I always opt for Shimla Pinks or the Tiffin. Both are good, imo.

Swatlands in Glenfield is lovely.

I also like The Curry House on London Road.

I painted that when it first opened (must be 20 years ago)
