Bettsj2 Posted 18 October 2010 Posted 18 October 2010 The Filbert Way Stadium sounds fooking shit. Like something a primary school child would come up with. The King Power Stadium sounds awesome. The Singha Stadium sounds awesome. The real question is though, Who really gives a fook what the stadium is called?? It's fooking unbelievable that we constantly find something to fooking moan about. Sousa's gone and we have a world class manager in place. The new owners have given him license to spend and he's already brought in two PREMIERSHIP quality defenders. We've signed a global partnership deal with a major beer brand which will bring money and kudos to the club on an international level but is that enough? Of course not. Our ground used to be Filbert Street so it's an injustice that the ground doesnt have Filbert in the name, the clubs not ours anymore blah blah blah. Depressing.

It was a corporate sponsored, rent-a-name from the start (Crisp Bowl anyone?) and nobody liked it back then. Most of those who are in any way attached to it now will likely just be those who are typically resistant to change, a great British state of mind. Don't get me wrong I'm hardly delighted to be the Singha or the King Power Stadium (though I'd seriously prefer the former - King Power Stadium? And you want to be taken seriously? Jesus) but if it's sponsor vs. sponsor vs. sponsor then I really don't give a damn. Newcastle had genuine right to be upset, we're just selling ourselves from one company to another.

I've just left a lecture comparing football to religion and the ground is the church and I agree with what was said. Now I'm not a deluded idiot who doesnt realise the commercial world of football these days infact I know more than most but stadium naming is something which really gets me going. It's hardly a player coming and going after 5 months or even a manager lasting 2 seasons, this is fixed. The walkers was hardly great but at least it had a bit of relavence to the club appearing on shirts as long as I can remember, right through the most successful era and being a Leicestershire based firm. I realise it's a loosing battle and the owners will tarnish it how they like but for me it will always be Filbert way or Freemans Common. Stadiums are something fans of clubs can always, even in these terrible times for football relate to and use to remember the good times. Take Derby southampton and Middlesborough for example all got new grounds the same as ours built within a few years yet named well enough and have a little bit of imagination and originallity about them name-wise, ours just cannot be unique can it? They may have poor bowls like ours but at least they don't resemble fvcking industry.

Err.. Correct me if I'm wrong, but we don't "belong" anywhere. You have to earn the right to be in the "Promise Land" and we've far from done that ever since we left it. And if pumping in countless millions in both wages and transfer fees (inevitably leading to ticket prices further increasing and giving our club even more of a corporate feel) is what it'll take for us to once again participate in "the best league in the world", then that can fvck right off as well. Our ticket prices are already too high for a middle-of-the-road, second tier club and it'll only get worse as more money is spent. Yeah, great fvcking plan. As for the stadium name, well, whatever, really. It's no secret that I have no form of affection for that place and being an identikit ground, it'd be foolish to suggest it's losing its sense of, well, identity, really. If I have to make reference to it, I'll probably just avoid names altogether and say shit like "you watching us at home?" etc.

It would be nice if the football authorities stipulated that stadiums had to have proper names, even if they were prefaced by a sponsor's name like they do with the league (Barclay's Premier League/ Npower Football League) At least then there would be some continuity and heritage.

We lost our identity when we left filbert street, where the matches take place doesn't matter, it's what happens out on the field and while we don't really need to change it "walkers stadium" is just as corporate as "singha stadium". edit: just remembered a quote (from where i don't know) saying "where it is not necessary to change, it is necessary not to change"
