Leicester_Loyal Posted 16 December 2010 Posted 16 December 2010 Good photos of the riots here. Can't see any disabled people getting smashed up though unfortunately. Photos I agree with what they are protesting against, but attacking Charles and Camilla and running over war memorials and damaging statues of Sir Winston Churchill is a disgrace.
Dickie Greenleaf Posted 16 December 2010 Posted 16 December 2010 Top film. Say, man, you got a joint? No, not on me, man. It'd be a lot cooler if you diid.
Jon the Hat Posted 16 December 2010 Posted 16 December 2010 I agree with what they are protesting against, but attacking Charles and Camilla and running over war memorials and damaging statues of Sir Winston Churchill is a disgrace. I am not sure they even know what they are protesting against.
Finnegan Posted 16 December 2010 Posted 16 December 2010 Some will, some won't. That's the big problem with student protests - too many dickheads going just for the trouble and to be cool.
ousefox Posted 20 June 2011 Posted 20 June 2011 Could anybody who's been to uni recently, tell me where and how good it is? Just want to get a picture of where is best to go and people's experiences. So far thinking of either LSE or Newcastle to do sociology but my mind can easily be changed...cheers
casablancas Posted 20 June 2011 Posted 20 June 2011 Newcastle wouks be a top place. As for the choice in degree, id think again. Be massive task in this job market wen ya done.

DB11 Posted 20 June 2011 Posted 20 June 2011 A degree in sociology? Could you explain the benefits and what jobs this would open up for you (that you would otherwise be overlooked in without a degree) Definitely has connotations of the type of student that's going for the 'student lifestyle', as opposed to the education.
Fosse Boy Posted 20 June 2011 Posted 20 June 2011 Wouldn't knock doing Sociology as a degree, you've got to be reasonably smart to got to LSE or Newcastle. If you're genuinely interested in it then do it. Sad to say but I think a lot of employers still look favourably on graduates of red brick universities and you'd be stood in good stead if you went to either of those places. Newcastle is cheap and has top nightlife, but London is London. Make sure you visit both cities before you make your mind up. Oh, and I certainly wouldn't choose to go into higher education just because it's "good", it's a lot of money just to have a three year piss-up with no job prospects at the end of it! Sure, indulge in the culture but your main reason for going should be because you have a passion for the subject or having a degree is a necessity for what you want to go into (which was the case for me).

So far thinking of either LSE or Newcastle to do sociology but my mind can easily be changed...cheers Really depends on who you are, what you want to do and where you want to go! Personally I love it, but then I knew I would. I like the independence it gives you, I like the area I'm in and I'm reaping rewards off my course at the moment. But at the same time I know of several people who decide they don't like it and drop out. They're rare, and most people have the time of their lives there. But the one piece of advice I'd give is to pick something you actually want to do. Don't go for the sake of it - you've got to do it for three years.

Genuinely interested in the subject and want to use it as a stepping stone into a masters or something else like that. So any student choosing Sociology just wants to go to uni for a piss up? I'm likely to get at least 2 A's and maybe even 3 next year so i think it's pretty fair to say i won't be going just for the lifestyle, thanks. Thanks for a decent reply yeah i think they're the main 2 i would definitely be interested in, just need to weigh up the pros and cons of each.

What subjects are you doing at A Level?
Joe. Posted 20 June 2011 Posted 20 June 2011 Don't waste yourself then. What subjects are you doing at A Level? Dick-ish response really. Just because it isn't history or maths doesn't automatically make it a dos subject. Sociology is perfectly valid.
Asha Posted 20 June 2011 Posted 20 June 2011 I'd definitely take the line of thought 'Am I going to enjoy the course?' before 'Where will it get me in life?'
ousefox Posted 20 June 2011 Posted 20 June 2011 Don't waste yourself then. What subjects are you doing at A Level? On Sociology? Most likely Politics, Economics and Sociology.
Fosse Boy Posted 20 June 2011 Posted 20 June 2011 Don't waste yourself then. What subjects are you doing at A Level? Fail to see how someone who is clearly academically bright wanting to pursue a subject their keen on is a "waste". I know sociology gets a rep as a bit of a div subject in the schools but it's really quite a challenging and interesting field.

I left it to see what response it would get. For the record, I wholeheartedly agree with your first line. With the exception of BTEC; I don't care if you can dance it's not a subject.
Fosse Boy Posted 20 June 2011 Posted 20 June 2011 I believe you, thousands wouldn't. Well backpedalled ref.
