I don't think Daggers is in any way confused about what Religious Studies is, I just think he feels strongly enough about religion to see that it's study still serves to perpetuate it's existence which is something he's morally opposed to.

My mistake, I didn't realise all we needed to do to get rid of religion was to stop people from studying it. Do you reckon if we stop teaching French in school we can get rid of the French? If so I'm all for it.

i'm an atheist and i think religious studies and the philosophy of religion ( as opposed to religious philosophy ) is as fascinating a subject as any

History dictates that outlawing the teaching of a language in the school system is a very good way of working towards it's eradication, yes. You could consult Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg or it's Gaelige equivelant to discuss it with someone more knowledgeable than I.

That said I appreciate that's more a weakness in your analogy than your point, one I don't strictly disagree with (I'm largely on the fence on the overall issue.) But in regards Daggers, not that he needs my defence, I would suggest that there's a difference between being opposed to the teaching of something for moral reasons and the belief that ceasing teaching it would get rid of it.

Ugh, I type like a moron at seven am.

Funnily enough I did think of Wales when I wrote that analogy (probably because I was replying to your post!) but the thought of getting rid of the French was too appealing to think of another one (maybe terrorism is another though - should we stop studying that because it has a bad effect on the world?)

Your defence of Daggers is fair enough. I guess what this comes down to is that people like me, Zingari, Webbo, etc have a different moral compass to Daggers, etc when it comes to religion.

I see no moral issue in teaching religious studies.

Yeah, we all have our bugbears, religion is obviously something Daggers feels passionately about.

I don't disagree with the crux of his argument, mind. I just suppose I'm hugely more moderate on the issue. Though I do feel the need to add, a girl (agnostic) I used to be close to was obsessed with RE/RS throughout her A-Levels and I did poke fun when she announced she was going to do it at uni (mostly because, though I'd never tell her, she's very, very bright and could have excelled at something more academically credible.)

She, rightfully, ignored my jibes and followed her own desire and about nine months later had dropped out citing that it was a complete waste of time and she'd hated it.

You wouldn't catch me stooping so low as to use religious customs to snare myself a bride !!

Not when a holiday in Thailand and the promise of a pretty burgundy coloured passport works just as well :)
