King David was real. And King Solomon and Jesus and Mary (one of the greatest women to ever grace the earth :D ) all existed. Marys bloke, Joseph, was made up though.

The other Joseph (Jacobs son), however, was real and apparantly did a bit of business with one of the Pharaohs.

Solomons writings are very appreciated in Freemasonry so I believe.

I'll say no more as it's a thread about students and also through fear of ridicule.

Oh KING Soloman, i thought you meant Stacey !!

He was also part of the sinking of the Titanic for insurances purposes.

NSLL may be acting like a prck but it's pretty immature and naive to take the piss out of him for wanting to study religion at uni.

Well, apart from religion being the willing and compulsory celebration of ignorance and bigotry based on fictitious historical events which (in turn) sit at the core of the death and suffering of billions of people...apart from that, yea there's nothing wrong in allowing retards to continue to practice it without insult.

Like a belief in reiki, dowsing, communicating with the spirit world and Mandaric (the last two not being mutually exclusive) it should remain a hobby for the stupid and not be funded by the state.

There's plenty that's offensively wrong with religious studies.

You do know that religious studies isnt about promoting a particular religion don't you? Sure, there will be a certain amount of students who adhere to a aprticular faith, but as religion is often at the core of some of the world's most important conflicts and social issues, surely it'd make sense to have some people with a reasonably in depth knowledge of what the fook is going on inside other peoples' heads?

You beat me to it. Spot on.

Hmm. I read it a second time and fvck me if I didn't say "Christianity" but "religion".

And you feel that major advances in the tackling of global conflicts and social issues is going to come through a BA in Religious Studies? Tell me what massive leaps in solving these two problems have been achieved to date by studying religion? Tell me what beneficial shifts in the understanding of religion has occurred in, say, the last fifty years, thank to studying it?

You see your BA in Film Studies wins every time of Religious Studies: Films never started wars, films didn't advocate the abstention of condoms in countries suffering from AIDS, films weren't to blame for genocides and films...this is the real tricky bit to grasp...films really exist. You'll get the same skill-set from studying it and it doesn't perpetuate a tolerance of the idiotic.

I'm genuinely struggling to think of that many merits of studying it as a major, to be fair.

Maybe if more people actively studied religion then more people would realise it's a ton of wank

Irrespective of your views on religion (and I share most of them) it's not going anywhere, and it will continue to be a major force shaping the world as we know it. Studying religion alone isn't going to solve global conflicts and social issues but then my BSc in International Securities, Investment and Banking didn't avert the credit crunch either. I don't think that's the point. What studying it may do is give people a valuable insight into the beliefs and behaviour of people that will continue to live their lives by it regardless of what anyone else says.

If I knew more about religion then I would have a much better grasp of many of the most pertinent issues facing the world today. That doesn't mean I believe in any gods (I'm an atheist) but I can still see the value of knowledge.

Truest thing anyone has ever said on here.

I didn't even think you cared about my existence enough to feel that strongly. lol

Anyway, so yeah I'll be doing religious studies and I'm really looking forward to it. In my eyes, it's one of the most fascinating and relevant subjects around. If that makes me a cunt then you're just odd, quite frankly. While I'm not currently completely decided on what job I want in five years time, the advice always given to me has been to take subjects that interest me and that I am passionate about - with inevitably my future career aspects likely to be down that path.

So what if certain employers may not find it relevant? Or of any value? I'm not into choosing something that will only tick a box to get me into a dead-end job. I couldn't give a shit about money either to be honest, I really couldn't. So what if choosing religious studies (potentially) reduces my chance of being in a 6+ figure-earning job in the future? Religion is my biggest interest in life, and whatever path it takes me down I know I'll be happy- and that's all that matters to me really.

Just a question mate, what kind of job will you be looking for after you finish your course? What jobs are available with a Religious degree?

Our R.S lessons at school are about throwing pencils at our teacher and seeing who gets caught first...

Personally, i will be going into college next year to study an Interactive Media course, which therefore would set me up for a Graphic Design course at University if i wanted, and that is the path i would like to go down.

I don't think it's right to say that NSSL's choice to study R.S is wrong or 'stupid' but i can also see where some of you are coming from when you say if won't really help the lad. At the end of the day, whatever interests you is the thing you should study, of course money in a factor in life, but i would prefer to study something i enjoy than something i am doing for the money.

Posted

I Wouldn't.

Obviously money always plays a factor, but i would hate to be stuck in a job which i have no interest in which pays a little more.

I really can't see why religious studies is any less relevant than Philosophy, Sociology , Classical studies or Politics.

Life would be so much better for everyone if people just worried about their own life and let others get on with theirs.

Posted

NSLL, can you answer my question regarding whether you've ever had a job?

Hopefully studying religion will open your mind to looking at it critically rather than just offering yourself up to further indoctrination anyway...

I think you need to consider the nature of religion; its' impact upon the legislative structures of countries and its' historical effects upon populations.

This isn't a case of allowing others to believe as they wish or live their lives in a manner of their choosing. Their addiction to bullshit directly impacts on every member of the country through moral (ha!) dictat, use of tax revenue, education and the construction of law.

Life would not be better in the slightest if it is allowed to remain unquestioned and unchecked. From nussul to David Icke - they should all be held to account and ridiculed for their idiotic beliefs up and until the point that we can have a state legally separate from religion.
