Steven Posted 30 May 2005 Posted 30 May 2005 Sylla signs a 3 year deal with us and Rab is on his way toosource 117391[/snapback] Sylla's off to Foxes and Rab will follow MOMO SYLLA has agreed a three-year contract with Leicester, and will soon be joined at the Walkers Stadium by Rab Douglas. The Celtic duo have accepted the deals put in front of them by Foxes boss Craig Levein. Sylla still had a year of his Celtic contract to run. But after a meeting with outgoing boss Martin O'Neill, he has reached an agreement which will allow him to move south for no fee. The Guinean midfielder, who joined the Hoops from St Johnstone for £650,000 in August 2001, explained O'Neill had suggested he might want to hang around to see if he figured any more often in the plans of new boss Gordon Strachan. But the frustrated 28-year-old is desperate for first team football, and believes this move will make that more likely. He said: "I've spoken to Martin about it and he understands I have been made an offer which is a good chance for me. Other clubs are also interested. "But, after being down at Leicester, I've been impressed by Craig Levein and believe this is the right move for me." Sylla may have to wait until he returns from World Cup duty with Guinea next week before he can finalise the deal. Likewise, Scotland keeper Douglas - who is now a free agent - is expected to have to wait until he returns from Belarus next midweek before he can sign the three-year contract Levein has offered. Douglas was delighted to finish his Celtic career with another shutout and another winner's medal. He said: "Celtic will go on long after myself and any of the others in the team leave. "But it was a great way to finish up with a clean sheet and lifting the Scottish Cup." Source
Anish Posted 30 May 2005 Posted 30 May 2005 I'm happy that Sylla has been given a 3 year deal and has signed, but I'm not so sure that Douglas should be given such a long contract.
Flemmish Posted 30 May 2005 Posted 30 May 2005 I think Rab Douglas coming is good news and I think he is more than adequate to fill Ian Walkers boots. As for Momo Sylla, im not quite sure what he is like but I trust Levein in his signings and hopefully they will both do well here.
davieG Posted 30 May 2005 Posted 30 May 2005 He may well have, but that report is not convincing enough for me to take it as gospel, it's only a newspaper report, it only says he has agreed, not signed, I'd be more convinced if it mentioned Strachan as it has nothing to do with O'Neillnow. It sounds like an old bit of reporting rehashed to me.

It gives us much less flexibility and if they don't perform we're stuck with them for quite some time. And Sylla and Douglas will be relatively big earners too.

Katy Posted 30 May 2005 Posted 30 May 2005 Got a feeling Rab Douglas will be a pig in a poke (for want of a better phrase) I hope im proved wrong.
City Fan Posted 30 May 2005 Posted 30 May 2005 Seeing as neither them are that young, I would have given them 2 year contracts - maybe 1 year for Rab......
lcfcmad2005 Posted 30 May 2005 Posted 30 May 2005 im happy that we have signed another player but, my friend is a celtic fan and he said that a piece of dog sh--te could do better then sylla and i said to him that i heard he can play in most positions on the pitch including up front and he replied: can he fcuk he can only play right back and right wing and when he played up front for celtic he played like a bag of shite cant score to save his life

At last we have a manager who is trying to build with the long term in his mind and try to build some continuity and loyalty and now people are concerned. Sometimes we do give Chandler ample opportunity to call us fickle boneheads. Give CL the benefit, these two players should be decent additions.

I actually trust Levein to do right by us.
hinds12 Posted 30 May 2005 Posted 30 May 2005 i am unsure about both of those signings but i am willing to give them a chance

You pull the trigger way too early Mr. Fox. I'm only being concerned at the fact he offers EVERY player 3 year deals. Surely he must know that it reduces flexibility in the case that some of them don't produce. Adams didn't actually only sign players with 'short term aspirations'. Williams, Gudjonsson, Heath, Connolly, Canero for example? But giving a 33-year old keeper a 3 year deal is questionable... Of course if they all perform then it's great, but if things don't work out, it could come back to haunt us...
SilverFox Posted 30 May 2005 Posted 30 May 2005 I made a similar point on another thread, its nice to see people, 'willing to give them a chance.' What is the alternative to giving them a chance? They have signed for us now...thats it, end of! If you don't like it there isn't much you can do. On Sylla, we all saw what Levein got out of Gillespie, well I would wager he can also get the best out of Sylla! Its no secret he didn't fit into O'neills plans, so lets see how he reacts to encouragement from both Levein and the SUPPORTERS. That is if you can muster up enough enthusiasm to 'give them a chance'!
Jonbluefox9 Posted 30 May 2005 Posted 30 May 2005 If the deal's done then I welcome both of them to the club. People are too quick to judge things. They make up their minds going on players' performances for other clubs where they've been playing against different opposition and have been playing with different players. If the way a player played for his former club counted for anything, Trevor Benjamin would've been a goal machine but he wasn't because he was playing against poorer opposition at Cambridge. Give these two a chance to actually sign before you start lambasting them.

Ric Flair Posted 31 May 2005 Posted 31 May 2005 I will be relatively pleased if we sign these players. Questions are going to be raised over the opinions of Celtic fans about them, but nobody can question their experience and with alot of younger players being signed we need a few experienced heads in there. From what i've seen of Sylla he's looked useful, Douglas is another matter. But Celtic have alot higher expectations than we do and if these dudes can get us in to the premiership then i'll be a happy man. I trust Levein, he doesn't throw money about and these lads won't be on as much as people might think. Every manager has their motives and Levein obviously feels longer contracts work better and that's fine by me. All we need now is 2 strikers, a winger and a centre half or two.

Hope im wrong but worried.
Louise Posted 31 May 2005 Posted 31 May 2005 They said on RL today that while the club don't deny we're in talks with Sylla, they have denied that it is going to be a 3-year deal.
Frenzied Posted 31 May 2005 Posted 31 May 2005 Here's some info on Sylla: Sylla Statistic ABS Avg Appearances 2 Mins. Played 14 Goals scored Total shots Assists Statistic ABS Avg Offsides 1 6.43 Fouls committed Fouls suffered 2 12.86 Yellow cards Red cards Mohamed Sylla A tricky player with a unique running style, Mohamed Sylla can operate on the right of midfield or as an emergency striker. National team An Ivory Coast international, he helped his country qualify for the African Cup of Nations in 2002, although they missed out on the finals in 2004. Club Sylla's first club were French side US Créteil, but it was not until he joined Le Havre AC in 1996 that he made his first-team debut, playing ten times in 1998/99. He spent the next season on loan at Le Mans UC 72 before moving to Scotland to join Saint Johnstone FC. 2001: His form in Scotland – including a spectacular goal in a 2-0 victory against Rangers FC - earned him an €860,000 move to Celtic FC midway through the 2001/02 season and he appeared in nine matches in his first season at Parkhead, scoring once. Sylla made 18 more appearances during the next campaign, scoring twice including a spectacular volley against FC Basel in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, a tie Celtic went on to lose. He featured throughout the UEFA Cup run, although he was an unused substitute in the final loss to FC Porto. 2003/04: Made just five starts as Celtic won the Scottish double. Seen as a deputy for Didier Agathe, Sylla was given opportunities in a number of positions but was unable to establish himself in the first team. Did you know? Sylla became the second player from the Ivory Coast to play for Celtic, following in the footsteps of Olivier Tebily. Unique running style? I'm intrigued as to what that could mean.
