DMU and Leicester Uni

Recommended Posts

Hello members of the general chat community.

It has come to that time for me to start thinking of universities and courses that I may wish to attend in a years time. Obviously being a Leicester fan, the attraction of the midlands is very large to me. I'm looking at a Sociology course at Leicester Uni and a Advertising and Marketing Communications course at DMU. I also saw a Public Relations and events management course at Derby.

I'd like to ask anyone who has done any of these courses, or attended any of these universities to offer any suggestions or any advise possible.

Thank you.

Apologies for treading on your topic, but I have a question too re: Leicester Uni. I've got a friend who's looking to go to Leicester Uni and wants to know good places to rent nearby. He's not gonna live in halls but obviously doesn't want something too expensive.

Basically, what are the best student areas to live in?

Poly til I die.

Re the housing question - somewhere around Clarendon Park's probably a good bet. Very student-heavy, Queens Road for shopping, not too far out of the way for all the stoodenty bars on London Road.

I do a similar course to this at DMU, it's pretty good, a few crap modules but the majority are pretty decent. Go for it, DMU is much more of a social uni compared to Leicester so it depends what you're going for really...

Don't go to feckin' Derby! Based purely on prejudicial football-related bias and a little help from the uni league table...

Translation:" the learning is shit but we're close to two scream pubs. "

I go Leicester uni. Isnt bad, I do geography, you get a shit load of work (and im sure its more than some other courses :( ) the library is good and o2 academy is good aswell. If your from Leicester I wouldnt reccomend staying, I made that mistake and this city has made me a bit depressed staying. Also if you can go to Leicester uni over DMU then do it, cough* more elite cough*.

As I have been to 3 Unis I think I am well equipped to answer questions. I will also put bits in about other Unis not mentioned by yourself, Unis which I have knowledge of by either attending or through the city itself as a location.

There are three/four key questions when choosing a University.

Uni

Location

Course/What to do with degree.

Uni

Attend the best Uni possible. This then scratches Derby from your list. Also location is important. Would you want to spend 3 years in a rat infested shit hole? Nope.

So from your initial request on information this leaves

DMU (or DUM if you are dyslexic) and Uni of Leicester.

Location Location Location

DMU & Leics are both in the greatest city O'Neill has ever given to mankind. But seriously, Leicester is a student city. I have spoken to people not from Leicester who went Uni in Leicester (after they had moved on). They said it was excellent. It also depends on where you are coming from. If you are coming from a small place, Leicester is perfect size wise. Its big but not too big. If you are coming from London it is perfect because its smaller but not too small. If you come from a similar place you might get bored.

Other great cities around the UK from my experience include Manchester, Sheffield (friend went there), and Nottingham is okay but the city is full of fooking inbreds. Honestly. My housemate is quoted as saying " This is the worst place I have ever lived in. This is the weirdest city I have ever been to. Everyone is either a crack whore, junkie, alcoholic or just mentally disturbed, or even just benefit scrounging scum." [paraphrased]. And to clarify where in Nottingham we lived, it was in a respectable part of the city centre.

Crime is also on the agenda. I have worked in a bookies in Moss Side, regularly walked through Moss Side with my phone/mp3 player out and never had any problems. Nottingham though... **** me. Its dodgy. I saw two violent knife muggings in 6 months. One was a group of guys on some guy on his own doorstep. The other was a guy attacking to girls. Everywhere has its places though. Its just that it seemed like the entire city of Nottingham is affected.Leicester is reasonable. Both DMU and Uni of Leicester have their locations. Uni Leics has Victoria Park and is close to Highfields. DMU is close to Bede Park and the general area just off Narbrough Road. Manchester is okay. The University campus is located near to Ardwick, Moss Side and Hulme. But Moss Side and Hulme have gone under regeneration and are not as bad. Ardwick is the place to get shot. Longsight is getting worse but its a bit further away. As for Sheffield I never had any problems when I went to visit my friend and I don't think he had any problems. Others on this board could tell you though.

Course

When choosing a course, pick something which interests you. But also be aware of point number 4, what you want to do with your degree. Where do you want to end up.

For example a sociology course at Uni of Leicester has more standing the Advertising and Marketing at DMU if you decide after your degree to go into law.

For best feedback go to the studentrooms and query people on there as you will find more people on those courses. Speak to the most amount of people as possible.

Relative humidity....

And of course, all together now..

Your sister is your mother,

Your uncle is your brother

You all f@*k one another,

At the end of the day, we can only offer you so much advice, but it's YOUR choice. You should be the decider of your future. Go to the uni's you're interested in (either through open days or just a casual visit). If you see yourself there - i.e. studying there and socialising and enjoying your time there) then that's all that matters. You don't want to be living or studying in a place where your feel uncomfortable.

Don't rush your decision though!

if you want to go to Leicester then put Leicester as your first choice and DMU as your second (assuming it is still the same as before and assuming you will get a lower offer for DMU than for Uni mate of mine went to DMU on 1 E (insert drug related pun here)). Let your grades make the decision for you.

Coming from Leicester it was the last place I wanted to study and like a few up there, I went to Sheffield, can't reccommend it highly enough I loved that place, I had to sacrifice my season ticket but I had the time of my life.

As for the guy looking for accomodation, why are you not going for Halls, a much safer bet than a flat, unless you have friends to move in with, but then half the fun of going to Uni is making a shit load of friends in the first 2 weeks, then spending the rest of the course tryng to ditch them. In a flat you can end up sharing with some right ****** and it could spoil the experience. Halls all the way for me.

It's not me looking for accommodation. I was asked by a mate if I knew anything about areas of Leicester. He had a hefty inheritance sum and he and his parents have decided to use part of that for his accommodation. I presume he is living with others but I can't be 100% sure cos he hasn't mentioned whether or not he's on his own.

This is my 2nd year in halls at Brunel Uni and I love it. Only accommodation to pay for and all internet/water/elec is paid for within that and it's cheap (surprising considering I'm in London!) I love hearing some of my mates complain about bills every month :P

Im at DMU studying graphic design so its a bit far from what you want to study but the facilities are amazing.

This is the course i want to take when/if i get the grades in the upcoming years. If you don't mind me asking pal, what A Levels etc did you take?

Cheers
