Fosse Boy Posted 27 May 2011 Posted 27 May 2011 Representatives from Corby have travelled to London to hand in an application for city status. The town in Northamptonshire has entered the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Civic Honours competition. One new British city will be named next year. The group was dressed in various historical costumes. The town's chief executive, Chris Mallender, said: "We've got people representing every significant period from Vikings to Tudor to modern day." Hunting grounds It was announced in 2010 by the government that a new city would be created as part of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012. The mayor of Corby, Gail McDade, said regeneration had improved Corby so much it deserved to be a city. Corby has Viking origins and the council is using its varied history to make the bid. "Corby was named after a Viking chief, we have Rockingham Castle which was built by William the Conqueror and then used as hunting grounds by the kings and queens of England," said Mr Mallender. A decision from the Cabinet Office on where will receive city status is expected early next year. Other candidates include Reading, Middlesbrough and Dudley. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-northamptonshire-13573600
samjohnson Posted 27 May 2011 Posted 27 May 2011 If they win the play-offs, I think it will go to Reading.
Guest Bilo Posted 27 May 2011 Posted 27 May 2011 What the fvck?! I think Middlesbrough or Reading myself but you never know...
Vacamion Posted 28 May 2011 Posted 28 May 2011 Population of Corby = 53,000 Population of Oadby & Wigston = 56,000 C'mon Oadby & Wigston - you are slacking by not applying for Metropolis status..
Bugg Posted 28 May 2011 Posted 28 May 2011 Lougborough might aswell apply for city status while we're at it too.
Jimothy Posted 28 May 2011 Posted 28 May 2011 Surely if any town in Northamptonshire should be applying for city status it's Northampton? Population of 200,000 or so.
Parafox Posted 28 May 2011 Posted 28 May 2011 Population of Corby = 53,000 52,500 Scots. I spent some time there and it's not a pleasant place TBH. A bit like Coventry but duller
Bob Weasel Fox Posted 28 May 2011 Posted 28 May 2011 52,500 Scots. I spent some time there and it's not a pleasant place TBH. A bit like Coventry but duller but it cant be as bad as Coalville surely?
Craig Posted 28 May 2011 Posted 28 May 2011 AHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!! you what!!!!! Such a desperate town.
Brown Fox Posted 28 May 2011 Posted 28 May 2011 Bloody hell there's me all these years thinking Middlesbrough was a city!
Parafox Posted 28 May 2011 Posted 28 May 2011 but it cant be as bad as Coalville surely? Coalville on a slightly bigger scale with the same percentage of Lycra testers
Simmo86 Posted 28 May 2011 Posted 28 May 2011 AHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!! you what!!!!! Such a desperate town. TBF Corby is alot better than Kettering now. Still a shithole though and will never get City status!
Guest Bilo Posted 28 May 2011 Posted 28 May 2011 Corby's had some money spent on it over the past few years so it is less of a shithole, but by no stretch of the imagination could it be described as a city. It really is far too small and hearing it has a smaller population than Oadby & Wigston is no real surprise.
Benji Posted 28 May 2011 Posted 28 May 2011 Reading and Middlesborough make more sense, they stick out as two places most people probably already think are cities through sporting connections.
Webbo Posted 28 May 2011 Posted 28 May 2011 Lougborough might aswell apply for city status while we're at it too. They did think about it My link LOUGHBOROUGH is not eligible for city status due to strict guidelines laid out by the Government.Charnwood Borough Council had intended to apply for city status after it was announced that a new city a was to be created to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee next year. However applications may only be submitted by local authorities which solely cover the areas bidding for city status - and as Charnwood Borough takes in other sizeable settlements such as Shepshed, Quorn and Birstall a bid would not succeed. In the Government guidelines on bids this rule contains the word “normally” so it had been thought an appeal could be made - but this exemption only applies in Scotland.
Austin Posted 28 May 2011 Posted 28 May 2011 Fook the lot of ya's! (typical Corby phrase) In all serious our TOWN should stay a town, it's not as bad as it use to be and for someone to say earlier in the thread its worse then Coventry has clearly never been here. We're definitely not big enough to be a city but for people to suggest the place is a shithole because they spent a short amount of time here 10+ years ago is a joke. I'm not saying round up your family and come here for a holiday but don't slag somewhere that in the last few years has improved vastly.
Austin Posted 28 May 2011 Posted 28 May 2011 I don't like Corby. Did you have an unpleasant experience here sweetie? <_<

It was a few yrs ago admittedly but I did go back briefly to Corby within the last 2 years and what I saw didn't change my opinion, sorry

Admittedly there's a high percentage of Chavs, but everywhere in the UK has them. I can't see what people would have against the place, it's not particularly hostile, the shops are alright.
Fosse Boy Posted 28 May 2011 Author Posted 28 May 2011 Used to play football against Wilbarston Primary School. Remember once we were 9-0 up at half-time they came back to 9-7 because we put the new kid (who turned out be toss) in goal.

It was won by a boy i used to know who lived in the village. He named it "Wilbarston Primary School"
