Carling Cup Draw 1st Round

Recommended Posts

Town have drawn Northampton Town at home in the first round of the Carling Cup. The sides last met in the same competition last season at the fourth round stage, also at Portman Road, the Blues winning 3-1.

Carlos Edwards, Damien Delaney and Tamás Priskin scored the goals as the Blues came from behind to win after a deflected Liam Davis shot had put the League Two side in front.

Historically, the Blues have won 12 games between the teams (nine in the league), 10 (seven) have been draws with Northampton winning 10 (10).

First round ties will be played in the week commencing Monday 8th August, almost certainly on the Tuesday.

Birmingham City will receive a bye to round three as they are involved in the Europa League, which means newly-promoted Crawley Town and AFC Wimbledon will play a preliminary match with one of the former Blue Square Bet Premier sides progressing to the first round.

Town's Championship fixtures will be announced at 9am tomorrow when they will be available on TWTD.

A local derby?

For the first round? I personally find that a 'local derby' is better to have later on in the competition as it seems to mean more but hey ho.

They mean enough to make a great game no matter when we play, I'd be just as pumped about beating Forest(I know it wasn't possible this round) in say the 2nd round of the Carling Cup as I would be beating them in a play-off final at wem-ber-ley.

I'd rather a derby was from the 2nd round onwards though. I always feel that the first round has that 'early season' feeling and sometimes doesn't generate as good an atmosphere as it deserves.

They don't generate as good an atmosphere as they deserve in the first place.

What were people expecting from a first round draw? Geeez....

a decent or at least semi-decent away day.

look at the teams we could have faced:

Burton/ Notts Co away would have been brilliant,

Chesterfield, Crewe, Walsall and Port Vale - while not as good as burton/notts - would have been decent aways which would be fairly accessible.

Sheff Weds would have been a decent draw in that there is potential for pre/post match dev cat action and hillsborough's a nice ground even despite it's lack of a terrace

Morecambe, Bury, Oldham & Stanley away also had decent potential.

Basically this is the worst possible outcome for an away draw, only thing worse could have been a home draw.

Still doable...

Yeah I know it would have been more ideal to have drawn teams like you have mentioned, but I don't think this was bad enough for people to start overreacting in the typical FT way.

Think we will have to agree to disagree on this.

true but there's also a trip to an athletics stadium in between and longer travelling time between dev cat - ground - dev cat, so less dev cat action and a shitter ground.

well its up there with the worst possible team to draw at this stage, so you should understand the dissapointment.
