accessory Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 Just wondering what peoples views are on who are the best players in the last decade Give reasons or not its up to you. Mine are: 1. Lionel Messi - agreed 2. Christiano Ronaldo - agreed 3. Thierry Henry - don't forget he was also part of a treble side at Barca 4. Nemanja Vidic - not convinced, never really done anything for Serbia 5. Zinadine Zidane - agreed 6. Xavi (Barcelona) - agreed 7. Ronaldinio - quality player but underachiever. Wouldn't put him in a world top 10. 8. Ryan Giggs - decent Premier player, not truly world-class though 9. Dennis Bergcamp - best years were in the 90s 10. Paul Scholes - see Giggs Its a lot harder than origional thought - So many playes you could name. Other contenders include Samuel Eto'o, Wesley Schneijder, Andres Iniesta, Iker Casillas, Andrea Pirlo, Miroslav Klose, Paolo Maldini, Robinho and Kaka. Sobering thought - Theo Zagorakis, who couldn't get a game with us, has won more international winners' medals than many of the above names.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 Namanja Vidic, the fourth best player in the world since the turn of the century? Alright then.
cairnsy Posted 8 July 2011 Author Posted 8 July 2011 Think personally he is the best centre back I have seen in the last 10 years
ScouseFox Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 - Thierry Henry - Lionel Messi - Andriy Shevchenko - Xavi - Ronaldinho - Ronaldo - Cristiano Ronaldo - Fabio Cannavaro - Zinedine Zidane - Raul Off the top of my head
Mack Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 A few for thought... Zola Nesta Cannavaro Nedved Figo Kaka Roy Keane Maldini I'm not sure how anyone can take vidic over Nesta and Maldini, personal opinion of course.

Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 Messi Zidane Ronaldo Nesta Xavi Rivaldo Henry Ronaldinho C. Ronaldo Ibrahimovic I'd have liked to have included the likes of Nedved, Del Piero, Shevchenko, Bergkamp, Seedorf, Eto'o, Totti, Kaka, etc, but there just isn't enough room. Ibrahimovic is a debatable one, but the man is a complete talent, despite his arrogance. You don't do the business for five of the world's biggest clubs without being bloody good.
iBleedLeicesterColours Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 1. Zidane 2.Messi 3.C.Ronaldo 4.Ronaldinho 5.Ronaldo 6.Rivaldo 7.Raul 8. Roberto Carlos 9. Xavi 10. Cannavaro
cairnsy Posted 8 July 2011 Author Posted 8 July 2011 Michael - I have noticed you have done all attacking players - I tried to vary it so i could get people from every position so name me the best cb/defender in the last decade
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 Michael - I have noticed you have done all attacking players - I tried to vary it so i could get people from every position so name me the best cb/defender in the last decade The best centre half? Maldini, Nesta, or Cannavaro. All far better than Vidic, without doubt. Cases could be argued for Sol Campbell from the turn of century through to about 2005, and Jaap Stam was a monster when he left United for Lazio (nothing to do with whatever he was taking at the time). Going to get shot down for this, too, no doubt, but, in my honest opinion, had it not been for injuries, Ledley King could be bracketed with the very, very best. Most unfortunate waste of English talent ever.

ajthefox Posted 9 July 2011 Posted 9 July 2011 Akinbiyi Henry Messi C Ronaldo Maldini Zidane Raul Not sure about a set of 10 but these would be the pick of my bunch
Jonezy Posted 9 July 2011 Posted 9 July 2011 No love for Claude Makelele? His departure spelled the end of the Galaticos era for Real Madrid and he helped Chelsea establishing themselves as a force in both domestic and European football. Probably the best defensive midfielder, the world have ever seen.
Fox92 Posted 9 July 2011 Posted 9 July 2011 Lucio? In my opinion, one of the World's best centre halfs. As a defender, I think he's got everything and more.

Probably the best defensive midfielder, the world have ever seen. I think a few Italians might query that last point. Serie A used to specialise in those types of players. But I agree Makalele should be considered as a possible contender.
accessory Posted 9 July 2011 Posted 9 July 2011 Pretty much entirely agree with accessory in the 2nd post. Cheers. I'd probably also include Cannavaro on my list. Sorry to hear that he's been forced into retirement.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 9 July 2011 Posted 9 July 2011 Even if he had stayed fit, would King have displaced Campbell, Terry or Ferdinand from England's central defence? In my opinion, that's without question. Had King stayed fit he'd have been England's finest centre half for a long, long time.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 9 July 2011 Posted 9 July 2011 Pretty much entirely agree with accessory in the 2nd post. Really?! That Ronaldinho, the talisman in a European Cup winning Barcelona side, as well as a World Cup winning Brazil side, Ballon D'Or winner in 2005, and widely considered to be one of, if not THE best player of the noughties, has underachieved and wouldn't be in a 'World Top Ten'? Do me a favour, please. Also: Other contenders include Robinho Robinho doesn't touch half the names being mentioned in this thread. The ultimate example of unfulfilled potential.
Kent Posted 9 July 2011 Posted 9 July 2011 Most of the names pick themselves but I'm surprised Bergkamp hasn't been listed yet. Was a genius.

Izzet is God Posted 9 July 2011 Posted 9 July 2011 1) Zidane 2) Figo 3) Raul 4) Cannavarro 5) Messi 6) Ronaldiniho 7) Xavi 8) C. Ronaldo 9) Rivaldo 10) Lucio 11 )Roberto Carlos (had to add this one on the end as he is amazing!) the list is endless and tbh I could of carried on naming another 10.

This is the same Ronaldinho who flopped badly at both PSG and Milan and was anonymous in a World Cup he was expected to dominate. During the decade he had at least as many lows as highs. Even his achievements at Barca should be seen in the context of how well they've done since he left. Best player of the noughties?
