Guest MattP Posted 1 September 2011 Posted 1 September 2011 came across this earlier this week and just remembered to post it. A guy who has been inside for 2 years comes onto a forum to write about it, absorbing stuff. http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=136858
Haydos Posted 1 September 2011 Posted 1 September 2011 I'd read his book if he wrote one, very interesting.
DB11 Posted 1 September 2011 Posted 1 September 2011 Just been reading this for an hour. Still not finished it! It's a great read though, and definitely puts so called 'luxury prison' lifestyle rumours to bed. Though, that is America, so whether that's different I don't know (and wouldn't like to find out )
Rincewind Posted 1 September 2011 Posted 1 September 2011 I have a book by a prison officer (ex?) Called SCREWED. Interesting read but most of the book I had little empathy with him. He believed he was doing a job and just that. He did not like bent officers or those inside for sex crimes. At weekends he liked nothing better than going out on the piss and dowing a few lagers. At the time of writing the book he was suspended for allegedly attacking an inmate (sex offender) Another officer did the beating but he was accused of helping and another officer who took a dislike to him reported him. Also the warden was not his favourite person. At the end I was still unsure how I felt about him. But in that job you cannot be seen as weak because the cons pick up on it. Not a job for me thank you.

Alexikokopops Posted 1 September 2011 Posted 1 September 2011 After reading for about 30 seconds he's mentioned Mexicans and the Aryan Brotherhood so I'm assuming this is America. Still, interesting enough so far.

MC Prussian Posted 1 September 2011 Posted 1 September 2011 Started to read this tale and I just couldn't stop until I got all the way to the end. Privileged 20-something with a three-year University stint in Australia starts screwing up his own life upon called back to Michigan by his (elitist) parents. Very gripping and should make more people aware of how bad prison can be and what prison life really is like, but that there are positives to take out of it once you're released. How does he put it? "You start appreciating the little things. Being kind, trying to help, being thankful." And that "...drugs are not to blame for your misfortunes. You make the wrong decisions when you're sober." There's so many great one-liners in there and I consider it a text truly rich with wisdom. Very fascinating and highly recommended. Great find.
ajthefox Posted 1 September 2011 Posted 1 September 2011 Read the whole thing and all of a sudden it's like an hour later. very interesting to hear the story from an educated perspective.

Rincewind Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 Read chunks of it. Some of what he says is in line with the book I read by a PO. Apart from the number of murders and being in the US The favours warnings and cons that were liked and disliked are there. He uses down to earth language too. I'm sure there would be some offbeat magazine that would pay to publish that. He could even leave the questions and comments in to make it appear to be an interview. If he doesn't want to be identified it could be done through a third party Would make a good serial.
