Trav Le Bleu Posted 29 October 2011 Posted 29 October 2011 Jimmy Saville passes away Tributes pour in for Jimmy SavileBroadcasting legend Sir Jimmy Savile - pictured here presenting Top of the Pops in 1976 - has died (BBC/PA) The "larger than life" veteran DJ and broadcaster Sir Jimmy Savile has died aged 84. The star, who presented the first episode of Top Of The Pops as well as his long-running show Jim'll Fix It, was found at his home in Roundhay, Leeds, just after midday, two days before his 85th birthday. Two of Sir Jimmy's nephews said their uncle died peacefully in his sleep. Roger Foster and Ian McKenna paid tribute to Sir Jimmy outside his flat. Mr Foster said: "It is with deep sadness that I can tell you that our uncle Sir Jimmy Savile passed away quietly in his sleep during the night. Jimmy was a wonderful man, his public face is well-known but we knew him as much more than an uncle, he was a very good friend. "Jimmy will be sadly missed by very many people. We would like to thank the people who have already offered their condolences." The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall led the tributes to the star - who was described by some as a "court jester". A Clarence House spokeswoman, said: "The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall were saddened to hear of Jimmy Savile's death and their thoughts are with his family at this time." Known for his trademark catchphrases, tracksuits and tinted glasses, friends and colleagues described Sir Jimmy as a "larger than life" character who was dedicated to charity work. Sir Jimmy started his working life as a miner in his native Yorkshire before running a series of clubs and working as a wrestler and DJ. He has raised millions for charity and for many years was a regular marathon runner in support of good causes. Quite an eccentric character, but helped lots of charities. Jim'll Fix It is surely an all-time TV great as far as family viewing is concerned. Top of the Pops one day Bubblng under the next. RIP
Zingari Posted 30 October 2011 Posted 30 October 2011 I don’t like to speak ill of the dead but Savile was nothing more than a fookin old fraud. I wrote to him on Jim’ll Fix It back in the early 80’s requesting him to fix it for me to spend a night with Glynis Barber and all I got was a curt response thanking me, but that it was not possible to fulfil my request this time . He did offer Helen Worth as an alternative but I didn’t respond as I believe he was taking the piss. RIP Jim One day "fix it" Next day "kicks it "
Rincewind Posted 30 October 2011 Author Posted 30 October 2011 seeing his age makes me feel old. In his heyday when I was listening/watching him hewasn't really a young bloke. He was 25 years older than me. Didn't realise that. Think he was one of the eldest of the DJ's around at the time though. He livened TOP up when he was on. Very charasmatic and seemed very genuine in his endeavours for charity. I don't think anyone else could carry off programmes like Jim'll Fix It as he did. For some presenters its all teeth and smiles who think they are the most important thing. With Jimmy it was the people that he helped.

DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 31 October 2011 Posted 31 October 2011 Jimmy, you were a legend in your time. Throughout the sixties until now, you were a truly special guy, and I shall miss not seeing you around. I remember that pot of tea we shared at Stoke Manderville hospital, and the wee chats we used to have. I am sure you will be spinning the discs still, and puffing away, and enjoying the cuppas still. God bless you.
