ScouseFox Posted 28 November 2011 Posted 28 November 2011 No Phil Taylor (again)disgrace Too fucking right.
Haydos Posted 28 November 2011 Posted 28 November 2011 Doesn't the personality in sports personality effectively mean 'person' rather than having anything to do with awarding their personality?
Narborough_fox Posted 28 November 2011 Posted 28 November 2011 Cav for me. First British green jersey winner and World road championship. Bit of a character as well. Farah and McIlroy as the top 3.
I am Rod Hull Posted 28 November 2011 Posted 28 November 2011 Got to be worth a fiver methinks Too right matey...
Jimothy Posted 28 November 2011 Posted 28 November 2011 Doesn't the personality in sports personality effectively mean 'person' rather than having anything to do with awarding their personality? Yes, If it was about actually being interesting rather than sporting achievement the same people would win every year. It's purely based on that persons year in sport. So yes Murray, Hamilton etc might be boring bastards, but they ability and success is what gets the nominated.

FoxyPV Posted 28 November 2011 Posted 28 November 2011 It's never been about personality - Michael Owen won it FFS. The man exudes all the personality of boiled cabbage.
Jimothy Posted 28 November 2011 Posted 28 November 2011 Thats them fooked this year then... Haha you know what I mean, I was picking out to sportsmen who aren't particularly the most exciting characters, but have been nominated. Mansell is another example.
Guest MattP Posted 28 November 2011 Posted 28 November 2011 Who the fcuk put Murray in? Ally Cook or Mark Cavendish, toss up between the two for me..
Guest MattP Posted 28 November 2011 Posted 28 November 2011 Thinking about it it's got to be Cavendish, Cook has been great but a lot of what he did was December last year.
Jimothy Posted 28 November 2011 Posted 28 November 2011 Who the fcuk put Murray in? Ally Cook or Mark Cavendish, toss up between the two for me.. Here is the list of which papers voted for who. Manchester Evening News voted for Patrick Vieira!!!!!
Guest MattP Posted 28 November 2011 Posted 28 November 2011 McIlroy will almost certainly win, but I'm punting for Andy Murray. Surely Darren Clarke will gets the votes ahead of McIlroy?
ScouseFox Posted 28 November 2011 Posted 28 November 2011 Thinking about it it's got to be Cavendish, Cook has been great but a lot of what he did was December last year. Aye, but not in time to get nominated for last years award. So still, technically this year. (I think).
StanSP Posted 28 November 2011 Posted 28 November 2011 Mo Farah should win for his capability to do this...
martyn Posted 28 November 2011 Posted 28 November 2011 Complete ****ing ignoramuses here again regarding Andy Murray, probably to be expected though. Won 5 tournaments, got to the semi-finals at all the Grand Slams (in the strongest era at the top of the game for eons). He's one of the best sportsmen this country has produced in recent times.

Not saying he hasn't had a good year, he has. But in comparison to others he shouldn't be anywhere near this. Froch is the best super middleweight in the world and isn't even nominated.

Froch is the best super middleweight in the world and isn't even nominated. He's won tournaments, reached the semi's in majors. He's had a very good year. Luke Donald hasn't won any majors either and he's made to the list. I know he became World No. 1 too, but we all know sports rankings are BS.

Despite being 3rd (edit Federer has reclaimed 3rd this week) lets be honest Murray is still miles off the top 3, it's one thing winning masters 500's in Indian Wells and Cincinnati etc but you still wouldn't back him in any of the grand slams at a late stage v the top three would you? What was it this year in 3 GS semis? 1-9 in sets? I know in his three finals he's lost 3-0 3-0 3-0....he seems to have the same issues as Henman when we get to the end of major tournaments.

Murray is playing in the strongest era at the top of the mens game for many a year. He's not 'miles' away from the top 3 at all, he has a winning record against Federer and matches up well against anyone on hard courts. He has also beaten Nadal in a Grand Slam QF and SF. Yes, he's not quite at the level of the top 3, but then, 2 of those above him can rightly claim to be amongst the best of all time. Regarding Henman comparisons, Henman was never really good enough to make that extra leap, Murray is. He is probably the best player ever with no Grand Slam title. If only he could have faced a Tsonga or a Mariano Puerta in his first Grand Slam final (like Djoko and Nadal), he could be sitting on 2 or 3 titles by now. Hopefully he can get the monkey off his back this year, because until he does, he'll always be a criminally underrated and unappreciated sportsman, which is unfair considering his talent and achievements in the game to date.
Guest MattP Posted 29 November 2011 Posted 29 November 2011 Del Potro is more talented than Murray, actually he's won the US hasn't he? I don't think Murray will win one unless he gets a Richard Kraijchek run to a final, I agree it's the strongest era Of all time but he does look like he's on a lower level when agaisnt the top players in GS. H2H v Fed great and if they meet in Doha I'd back Murray to win, problem is if they then meet in Melbourne in Jan Fed probably beats him 3-0 as he seems to raise his game for Gran Slams rather than lower it. Murray might end up being a another Nalbandian, I agre his best chance is the US, I don't think he would see off Fed, Djokovic or a fully fit DelPo in the next 2-3 years though.
martyn Posted 29 November 2011 Posted 29 November 2011 Whilst he is a fantastic player at full tilt, I personally disagree that Delpo is more talented than Murray. If we use Grand Slam titles as justification for 'talent' then we can say Gaston Gaudio and Thomas Johansson are more talented than the Murrays and Nalbandian's of this world, simply not true. Having said that it would be a massive shame if Del Potro can't get back to his 2009 level due to injuries. Anyway, that's my last word on the subject, don't want to turn this into the tennis thread!
Alexikokopops Posted 29 November 2011 Posted 29 November 2011 "Monty, put some Lionel on!" For that, and that alone, it's Cooky all the way.
Ford Super Sunday Posted 29 November 2011 Posted 29 November 2011 That competition lost all credibility to moment Ryan Giggs undeservedly won the award simply because he had ten trillion Man Utd fans voting for him.
I am Rod Hull Posted 29 November 2011 Posted 29 November 2011 That competition lost all credibility to moment Ryan Giggs undeservedly won the award simply because he had ten trillion Man Utd fans voting for him. Unstoppable...

Going horrendously off topic for a second, but your sig, makes me laugh every time! The whole bench go mental, players and managers running everywhere and then just towards the end you see these three sets of legs that literally dont move an inch!! . I'd imagine they were the pissed off benched players who couldn't get a game for shit but still, was an amazing moment and for them to not move at all! Back on topic, Got to be Rory really!
