Out of that list I would like to see Rory win it or Cook but can see Clarke winning it.

Wondering why Joe Hart or Phil Taylor aren't in there. People will probably question Joe Hart but look at what he's achieved this year?

Unbeaten in his England career, FA Cup Winner, helped get Man City to UCL, this year has put in some fantastic performances for club and country and sitting top of the Prem.

Complete ****ing ignoramuses here again regarding Andy Murray, probably to be expected though.

Won 5 tournaments, got to the semi-finals at all the Grand Slams (in the strongest era at the top of the game for eons). He's one of the best sportsmen this country has produced in recent times.

Always the bridesmaid in other words.

So it was a bad year for our nations sporting women then?

Not really but the whole furor over it has pissed me off. For starters people calling the BBC and the award panel sexist, it's not the BBC who pick the contenders, it's voted for by something like 22 different sports departments at national and regional newspapers and magazines. They hand in a list of ten and those who appear on those lists most make up the final 10. Just so happens this the final 10 are all men. Secondly, yes we've had female world champions, but does that mean they should be shoe ins for the final list. Sarah Stevenson was Taekwando World Champion this year, and there are complaints she missed out on the list, but if her male counterpart had done the same, would people be arguing for his inclusion? There are complaints that Rebecca Addlington hasn't made the list despite winning a swimming World Championship, but Alistair Brownlee is Triathlon World Champion and he hasn't made the list either, so where are the people flighting his case? Beth Twedle came 3rd in 2006 for being World Gymnastics Champion, I'm pretty sure Daniel Keating won the male equivalent in 2008 and didn't even make the final 10. It's a big hooha over nothing.

It just so happens, rightly or wrongly, that sports such as golf, football, F1, and cricket are more high profile on the mens side, so achievements in those are more likely to be recognised. Sports where women have dominated happen to be very low profile, and I doubt male or female world champions from those sports would make the list most years. The only sport where men and women are seen as on par and receive as much media attention is tennis, and we have one top class male player and all our women are woeful.

Keatings wasn't even a medallist that year.

The BBC have sent out a very negative message that women and sport don't mix.

But FFS, this is not Saudi Arabia. Women participate in sport too and deserve to have their achievements honoured and respected as much as men do.

And why were porno mags like Nuts and Zoo invited onto the selection panel? Was it any wonder that neither of them featured any women on their lists? Heads should roll in the BBC sports department for this.

Rebecca Adlington (together with Keri-Anne Payne, another swimming world champion), has at least as strong a claim for inclusion as the likes of Andy Murray, who once again failed in the major tournaments.

As for the arguments about "minority sports" they weren't relevant when Princess Anne and Zara Phillips won the award, and shouldn't be relevant now.

Where is Carl Froch? World Champion for 3 years now and never even considered.

The argument is bollocks, I can't think of at competetion less sexist to be honest as it's gone to female winners in the past when they clearly have not deserved it.

Head's should roll as they invited a couple of sports magazines that like to show pictures of decent looking women? Fcuking lunatic.

Sports Personality of the Year 2011: Mark Cavendish wins BBC award

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/sports_personality/16303729.stm

World road race champion and Tour de France green jersey winner Mark Cavendish has been voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

The 26-year-old is only the second road cyclist to win the award after Tommy Simpson claimed the prize in 1965.

He said: "This award is a landmark for cycling. For cycling to be recognised in a non-Olympic year is unheard of."

Golfer Darren Clarke, who triumphed at the Open, was second with world 5,000m champion athlete Mo Farah third.

The right man won in my opinion.

It's ridiculous that Cook didn't make the top 3. Over 1000 runs in the calendar year plus a few hundred more between the last SPOTY and the end of 2010.

Agree with ttfn. Cook was superb all year, some of his innings in an historic tour of Australia were unreal. And then continued into the summer playing a huge part in his side becoming the best in the world. Oh well.

I've noticed this evening that some of our cricketers are really quite fit.:sweating::innocent:
