We were actually top after 8 games. ;) We drew 0-0 with Sunderland to go top and then stayed there for two weeks due to an intenational match the following week.

Wycombe might have triggered our collapse, but the signs were there long before that game. We were very fortunate in many of the earlier games to come away with anything, but somehow did, and as they say luck evens itself out over the course of the season.

Taylor was still utilising MON's team and formation, but had drafted in a few of his own signings, with an emphasis of hitting diagonal balls as opposed to playing the ball down the line for the likes of Heskey to hold up, or to turn and run at the opposition's backline. Unfortunately, we had Akinbiyi, who was expected to hold the ball up centrally, which would often bounce straight back to the opposition...

We were still defensively sound because we had Lennon employed in front of the back 3 - Soon as he departed, it was all downhill in terms of the way we functioned, but the decline didn't start until Wycombe...
