Ashley Posted 8 January 2012 Posted 8 January 2012 Notts Working Mens Club for me. Excellent function room up stairs.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 8 January 2012 Posted 8 January 2012 I'm assuming there similar to what we have in Australia called RSL's (Returned Services League) membership is free but you don't need to be a member but it you get discounts at any RSL across Australia. There non-profit always have a TAB (tote), cheap meals, drinks, pokies. Great place to go for a good meal and pay respects to all the old diggers that have fought for our nation.
Rincewind Posted 8 January 2012 Posted 8 January 2012 WMC I think started before WW2 for miners and and shipyard workers. It was somewhere to meet after work and spend their wages before their missus's got hold of it. They boomed in the 50's and 60's with the entertainment and bingo for the ladies. They started to decline in the 80's and 90's when younger people had pubs more to their liking and didnt want to hang out with older people. And now they are used only by a few. Dont know what its like up t' north.
rico Posted 8 January 2012 Posted 8 January 2012 Used to be a member of Belgrave WMC on Checketts Road back in the 80s,my dad was a member before me and used to take me and my bros' down when we were kids during the bank holidays for free pop and crisps Loved to see the blokes on the stage drinking the yard of ale
Guest MattP Posted 8 January 2012 Posted 8 January 2012 I used to go Newfoundpool with my grandad when he was alive, He was a live long member and on the committee. Also used to go New Parks Social Club with the kids on a Saturday night, just like i did with my Mum and Dad when i was younger. I got told by a friend when he applied for membership at the New Parks club one of the commitee (we all know the sort that sit on these things in WMC's) asked him if he had ever been a member of the communist party
Rincewind Posted 8 January 2012 Posted 8 January 2012 When I was a member of Beaumont Leys WMC there was a bus trip to a WMC darts finals on the way back someone got beat up on the coach. and thrown off. It was a committee member that did it. No action was taken against him. When my mum first met my stepdad he worked behind the bar where she worked too. The committee members wanted free drinks for them and their families. My mum and stepdad refused. The final straw was when I went to pay up one year and was told they could not afford to hand out beer vouchers . I tore my card up and walked out never to go in again. I had moved away from the area by then though.
old koppite Posted 8 January 2012 Posted 8 January 2012 Notts Working Mens Club for me. Excellent function room up stairs. Ah , the notts! glad its still going - do they still put bands on in the function room at the weekends? What's happened to the one down near Wharf Street? As I remember that was a good club with large function room- played my first ever gig there! Probably closed years ago

Probably closed years ago Downstairs at the Notts yeah they do put bands or singers on, on a friday & saturday night. I'm only a young lad but I've grew up in WMC'S my granddad and nan were Steward and Under Steward at the Spinny Hill for many years. This isn't being baised but when they left the club went down hill and now its no longer a club... Been sold. Members will be paid out within this next year.

Used to be something by way of a panto on stage, and party food spread right down the tables, we used to think it was great. Also, went to the one on Gipsy Lane, on the left hand side just under the bridge, but no idea what it was called (somebodies going to tell me it was the Gipsy Lane Club aren't they?)
Bert Posted 8 January 2012 Posted 8 January 2012 Newfoundpool is not New Parks. Live five minutes from there and used to go a fair bit. King Richards WMC was the best.
Rincewind Posted 8 January 2012 Posted 8 January 2012 Used to go in the Old King Richards road in the 70's early eighties. Same with the Notts on Friday nights. Open mic and then upstairs for the dancing. mates I was with were 5-10 years older than me so it suited them. 50's music Even remember the WMC where the Haymarket is opposite really. Used to be Lewises next door.

Head Honcho Posted 9 January 2012 Posted 9 January 2012 Was a member of the Railwaymens club and used to go early doors to The Boot and Shoe and the Notts when in town.
old koppite Posted 9 January 2012 Posted 9 January 2012 Was a member of the Railwaymens club and used to go early doors to The Boot and Shoe and the Notts when in town. What, on the East park road? Is it still going? Was the Boot and Shoe down the back of Lee circle somewhere?
Head Honcho Posted 9 January 2012 Posted 9 January 2012 What, on the East park road? Is it still going? Was the Boot and Shoe down the back of Lee circle somewhere? That's it Boot and Shoe was on Wharf St. Think it's the starlite 2001 club now and the Railwaymens was on East Park Road. The Railwaymens is rumoured to be one of the wealthiest WMCs in the country, not sure how true it is!

I remember the Spinney Hill - that was a really good club as well. I was born in the old Charnwood Street area, and we lived in a shop on the corner of the old St Saviours Road - I bet your nan and grandad would remember the old Charney. Amazing to think how many WMCs there used to be in a small area of East Leicester - anyway, all the best mate

DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 9 January 2012 Posted 9 January 2012 Why are there not any "Working Women's Clubs"? Is this not discrimination? Sorry folks, but you know the daft age we live in!
Guest MattP Posted 9 January 2012 Posted 9 January 2012 Why are there not any "Working Women's Clubs"? Is this not discrimination? Sorry folks, but you know the daft age we live in! They go by the name "weight watchers"
Rincewind Posted 9 January 2012 Posted 9 January 2012 They have the WI and pre-natal classes and knitting/cookery clubs what more do they want?
kyle09uk Posted 11 January 2012 Posted 11 January 2012 Used to go to the Braunstone one But live just off Tudor rd now though.

The Railwaymens is rumoured to be one of the wealthiest WMCs in the country, not sure how true it is! I was a member there and used to work with its president. The last I heard, it was still holding its own. Used to hold surgeries at New Parks club. I got on well with their committee, though they didn't care much for Patricia Hewitt, especially after she brought in the smoking ban.
Bert Posted 12 January 2012 Posted 12 January 2012 What, on the East park road? Is it still going? Was the Boot and Shoe down the back of Lee circle somewhere? Thats still Going!
