This thread will probably die on it's arse but I was just curious.

I've just paid up my membership for this year of the Thurmaston Club but to be honest paying up is the only time I go in.Anyone else a member of any of the working mens' clubs?

Not now. Dont go in any. Been in the one in Syston on a CAMRA pub tour but not sure if its a proper WMC. Also has beer festivals so doesn't serve the normal WMC shitty ale. Mine was Latimer I hate to say. Joined after dropping out the Beaumont Leys and my Stepdad joined me. Left when told life membership was 25 yrs not 20. Only used to go in to pay up anyway and the vouchers for beer had ceased and because of my work could not get there. They are about finished anyway. City Centre ones have gone and the atmosphere deathlike.

We used to go in the Latty a bit when we were kids in Belgrave. I think it's struggling now, they've had to sell off the concert room.

I've often wondered what the difference between a WMC and a con club is.

A workings mens club is registered with the CIU (club and institute union) Conservative clubs aren't usually, although I think the Latimer Club is a Conny club and that's registered.

I always think that Working Mens Clubs are the most ironically named places. Oadby WMC has been closed for years.

Just what exactly IS a Working Mens Club, I always imagined it's just like a pub but for old retired people but then one of my old mates played snooker at the one in Wigston (ironic as it's oppositethe Winchester Snooker Club!)... Are they a bit like Peter Kays Phoenix club? was that a WMC?

I hardly go in now but stil pay my subs every year at the Newfoundpool one, seems to be one of the few clubs still thriving, been a member since I was 18 and I'm number 800 odd still.

Haven't been in one for about 30 years used to belong to 2 or 3. Eyres Monsell, Belgrave and one in town who's name I've forgotten.

Used to have good local talent on them, saw Family at one of them, cheap beer and no women could be served at the bar :P

Yeah that's the one, I used to play a lot of snooker in there, went in about 18 months ago but not been in since, was absolutely packed though. Still, Newfoundpool is one of those places that still retains that 70's/80's community spirit most places seem to have lost.

I used to go Newfoundpool with my grandad when he was alive, He was a live long member and on the committee. Also used to go New Parks Social Club with the kids on a Saturday night, just like i did with my Mum and Dad when i was younger.

surprised there's any left - in their day they were great places - all part of working class heritage - even by the late 80s some of them were still very busy and you had to wait, and be approved before you could join - I moved away from the city 20 years ago and sad to hear that they have nearly all gone
