jonthefox Posted 15 January 2012 Posted 15 January 2012 Ive just read this article where he admits he contemplated suicide . Apparently he became depressed after his career had finished. Were starting to see more and more of this nowadays with gazza probably being the most high profile. so, do football players have it all?. http://web.orange.co.uk/article/sports/windass_reveals_suicide_bid
Alexikokopops Posted 15 January 2012 Posted 15 January 2012 I guess we're seeing more of it because there's been the realisation that it's ok to talk about it rather than having to retain the image of a strong sportsman and keeping it all in. Ultimately that can only be a good thing when you look at the end results of Robert Enke and Gary Speed keeping depression under wraps (working on the assumption that Speed was depressed of course, none of us know for sure).
foxfanazer Posted 15 January 2012 Posted 15 January 2012 Hopefully this shows that something positive is coming from the tragedy of Gary speeds suicide. Credit for dean windass for speaking out
Head Honcho Posted 15 January 2012 Posted 15 January 2012 How do you fail two kill yourself twice? If he'd seriously wanted to end it all he would have done! It's a cry for help, so let's hope he gets all the help he needs. I'm not sure he can blame football either. We don't know his personal circumstances but to blame football I think is an easy option, and a headline maker more than anything else.
Houdini Logic Posted 15 January 2012 Posted 15 January 2012 One of the best goalkeepers I've ever watched
Ultra Posted 15 January 2012 Posted 15 January 2012 He's had some issues to deal with, like the break-up of his marriage and the death of his father. But at a guess, never having met him, I'd say his biggest problem is that his football career's over and he has no idea on what (if anything) may replace it. I hope he manages to sort himself out. I'm sure there are thousands of Hull fans who will do whatever they can to help him pull through.
purpleronnie Posted 15 January 2012 Posted 15 January 2012 Wasn't he a reporter for sky?, seems like a perfect job for an ex footballer. I wish him all the best.

Exactly, we saw a spate of people past and present in AFL talking about there battle with depression a couple of years ago.

Head Honcho Posted 15 January 2012 Posted 15 January 2012 Exactly, we saw a spate of people past and present in AFL talking about there battle with depression a couple of years ago. Wouldn't you say that they were feeling sorry for themselves rather than depressive?I know it's a touchy subject and even highly qualified professionals have differing views but getting a bit moody because you can no longer play the sport you love is not depression.
Bert Posted 16 January 2012 Posted 16 January 2012 Wasn't he a reporter for sky?, seems like a perfect job for an ex footballer. I wish him all the best. Yep, but for what, 3/4 hours once maybe twice a week?

I said past and present players, once one player came out at told the public about his battle with depression. More players who were suffering the same illness also came forward. Was merely backing up what Alexkokopops's point that more people are coming out and seeking help rather than hiding away and trying to battle there illness on their own.
