jamesmilner Posted 3 February 2012 Posted 3 February 2012 mills is good at heading , good at defending when facing away from our goal . he cant pass , he humps it 50/60 yards with no idea where ,giving the ball to the opposition , and facing goal his defending isn't great . bout sums him up !

If Peltier actually played a forward pass in his life rather than backwards or square then Mills would see less of the ball as these passes usually end up back with Mills. If we tried to stop him being the outball or the time or if Danns or Wellens dropped back to offer the short option instead of running off it might help. When Drinkwater came on he kept collecting the ball off the defenders and had the composure when under pressure to find a pass rather than give it to the defence. No-one seems to blame St Ledger for giving away the free kick for their second even though the ball was going straight to Mills to clear and their striker was getting nowhere near it.

St ledger is crap in the air and a liability on the ground and though he gave away a free kick which led to their second goal-had drinkwater not given the ball away in the first place it might not have happened! Three centre backs is the way forward with Mills Bamba and Morgan sweeping up and while we're on the subject get our midfielders practicing the simple stuff like not giving the ball away cheaply. Oh and one last thing, get rid of gally and give someone else a chance with the dead balls christ it was cold on wednesday! R u mad he is class a crap player doesnt get man of the match twice in a row !!!

If the midfielders tried to make space for themselves and offer him a short option, he wouldn't have to hoof the ball away so often.

He wins nearly every header he goes for with absolute ease, and many times this year has put in a fantastic last ditch challenge saving the embarrassment of his team mates. He is a very good defend no doubt about it, most people just think of the £5million price tag and expect to have a centre back that can pick out passes like beckham.

When you have a success rate of 1 in 20 then they just come across as lucky rather than any skill on the part of Mills. I'm not criticising Mills, just saying that against Barnsley Mills hoofed it up and Dyer pounced on it and scored, that was not a quality pass by Mills, it was good work from Dyer. Mills' success rate is about the same as Schmeichel, but we love his big bombs up to the front 2.

Drinkwater gave the ball away.. the striker was easy onto that as it was inbetween ssl and mills, kasper wouldnt of got to it.

Sampson Posted 3 February 2012 Posted 3 February 2012 The distribution is frustrating, but that's not the only problem. He's almost the opposite to Yakubu, in that people seem to just like him because he shows passion and makes a few headers and blocks. Next time you watch him, don't just be blinded by a few flashy blocks and winning a few headers but just actually pay particular attention to his positioning and his marking and you'll realise why some of us think he is a poor player. Defending is about winning the ball back and keeping the ball, not just winning headers or throwing yourself in front of balls. 99% of professional centre backs in England can win headers and block balls, English football is absolutely chock-a-block with the "stopper" type defenders, but you need more than just that, but so many fans will ignore this. Yet his positioning and marking are poor. People criticise Bamba for running 20 yards out of defence to show off how skillful he is, but Mills charges 20 yards out of defence to show off his defensive ability. He constantly charges forward to make headers/tackles he really doesn't need to be making, leaving the space behind him open and his fellow defenders scrambling back to cover him. Then when he does make them, the accuracy of his headers is poor, it's almost as if he wants to show off that he can win a header over actually being an intellegent defender and defeneding the goal. Fans will say how he's "a really good solid defender" for winning the header, but in winning that header it's actually poor defending as he's just given the ball back to the opposition but now he's out of position and the defence behind is scrambling to save him. See the first half on Wednesday night, in which he was absolutely dreadful and constantly out of position and St. Ledger was digging him out of trouble over and over again. His marking as well is so lazy, St. Ledger was marking his man and watching his man all night on Wednesday, I have never seen Mills do that once, he just stands there at the back, happy to let players run through and on to balls every single game. If you can't see why people think he is poor pay closer attention to his off the ball work next game and not just to his headers (which aren't even that good anyway, he doesn't win that many and the intelligent direction of his heading is non-existent) and throwing himself in front of a few shots, which anyone can do. He just does what you'd expect any amateur player to do: wins a few headers and makes a few blocks, but he can't pass, he's got no sense of intelligent direction on his heading or no sense of intelligent marking or positioning. He's just a glorified pub player essentially.
