sphericalfox Posted 12 May 2012 Posted 12 May 2012 My surname is in the English dept there but I'm Irish. Hardly taking immigration into account. It probably should say 'most common surnames in England/Scotland/etc
Zingari Posted 12 May 2012 Posted 12 May 2012 I've never heard of anyone called BEGUM . Is it a Yorkshire name ?
Jimothy Posted 12 May 2012 Posted 12 May 2012 Surprised not to see my name on the English/Welsh list, thought it was fairly common, common enough to make the to 100 anyway.

I am Rod Hull Posted 12 May 2012 Posted 12 May 2012 My surname is fake. In 1921, my great gran became pregnant out of wedlock. After being locked outside in the rain by her father for being late home one evening, she caught pneumonia and died giving birth to granddad Jack. A few days after he was born, a Rolls Royce with a couple of posh folk (1 very tall young bloke and his father) pulled up at the house wanting to take him away and raise him, Jacks gran said no and raised him herself. Or so the story goes . I`m probably some kind of minor royal or something, I quite like the sound of Carl Sax-Coburg-Gotha.
daib0 Posted 12 May 2012 Author Posted 12 May 2012 Try checking your surname here for seeing how many families with the same name live in each county of England & Wales: http://www.ancestry.co.uk/name-origin?surname=McDermott the search facility is pretty good ... By the way, at the top of the map where it says Emgland-Wales, you can easily cue in Scotland to see how the name does there as well. (By the way, I'm a Johnstone, and proud of it! - McDermott shows on the link 'cos I was checking out the Reading manager's name!)
Parafox Posted 12 May 2012 Posted 12 May 2012 Strictly speaking this lis is incorrectly titled. There are several non-English names on there, Patel, Begum etc. It's really a list of the most commonly occuring names in England, not English surnames
sphericalfox Posted 12 May 2012 Posted 12 May 2012 Strictly speaking this lis is incorrectly titled. There are several non-English names on there, Patel, Begum etc. It's really a list of the most commonly occuring names in England, not English surnames I've eluded to this, however it does then drag up the question of Scottishness, Englishness etc. Surely someone with the name Patel who is born here, is as English as someone named Smith for example? The defined origin of the surname probably isn't the same as whether you yourself or the name you are checking are English/Scottish/Welsh though.

I agree with that but we just don't know how many names of a different ethnic origin, born elswhere, are on this list
sphericalfox Posted 12 May 2012 Posted 12 May 2012 I agree with that but we just don't know how many names of a different ethnic origin, born elswhere, are on this list Well it would make the statistics of all of these inaccurate in any case if it doesn't differentiate between someone born in the country and someone with the name but an immigrant.

Fox92 Posted 12 May 2012 Posted 12 May 2012 No, my surname isn't included on any of those lists, but I knew it wouldn't be anyway. It is rare and most people I meet, don't know how to spell it anyway.
Saxondale Posted 12 May 2012 Posted 12 May 2012 My surname isn't in any of the top lists, which surprises me as it's not uncommon. It can't be far outside the top 100. I share it with at least one other person on this forum, I believe!
HEGGSY Posted 12 May 2012 Posted 12 May 2012 I know Heggs is very common in Leicester, not sure about anywhere else though.
