Zingari Posted 22 June 2012 Posted 22 June 2012 I think the loopholes are there by design for the sole purpose of exploitation by the very wealthy who only need to act legally and are unconcerned by morals . It's only the quite well off and the rest of us that seem to have the moral card thrown at us. Surely they would have been closed by now if they were just oversights.
Captain... Posted 22 June 2012 Posted 22 June 2012 The govt, any govt, didn't make it legal they just didn't make it illegal. There are very clever tax lawyers constantly pouring over legislation looking for loopholes. The govt have to react to avoidance schemes and legislate in a way that can't be challenged in court. It takes time. Maybe in this specific case they didn't, but do you honestly think they were not aware of it? They have been banging on about a crackdown in tax avoidance and yet have done f'all about it until the Times ran this story, and they have still yet to say it is illegal, just immoral. http://www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/magazine/tax-avoidance-cayman-islands-channel-4-dispatches/ The 3 main tax havens are British off shore territories, Cayman Islands, Jersey and Guernsey a quick google and you can also find tax havens in Belize, Nevis, Gibraltar all have very strong links to the UK. The current and the previous government have known about these tax havens for years, and have let them continue.
AdamN Posted 22 June 2012 Posted 22 June 2012 It seems to boil down to a couple of things. First whether or not you like Jimmy Carr. If you don't it makes it a lot easier to slag him off for exploiting a loophole views are along the lines of 'he's an unfunny arrogant smarmy c%%t and by the way not a very nice man for paying less tax than me.' "It turns out Krusty is one of the biggest tax cheats in history, and they nailed him, all thanks to you. Some might say you're a hero, kid. Not me, though. I love Krusty."

flowwolf Posted 22 June 2012 Posted 22 June 2012 Of that I have no doubt. But I was talking more from a purely practical standpoint, in reply to posts like this (which I probably should have quoted to start with): My point being that he and many others will pay much more tax than 99% of us, regardless of whether they enter this scheme, and so would still have contributed more to hospitals, schools, maintenance, etc. It's not Jimmy Carr's job to fund the NHS - it's down to the government who are supposed to be enforcing whatever taxes they impose on society. If they allow loopholes like this, which are perfectly legal, then you can't start pointing fingers at individuals when they choose to exploit it. Unfortunately the media loves a scapegoat, so I'm sure instead of attacking the root of the problem, they'll drag the likes of Carr over the coals, which'll no doubt be fueled in part by people who simply didn't like him in the first place. But you are missing the point. this is about greedy bastards who already have enough to live a grand life style without having resort to paying less than the working class, who week by week are just trying to keep a roof over their heads and feed and clothe their children and still have to pay the going rate of tax. Often as not the it's the rags to riches types who are the first to lose their morals. It's rather ironic that the likes of Jimmy Carr don't even possess the intelligence to find yet alone act on these loop holes yet there are those nameless faceless accountants with no morals despite their intelligence, who profit and go undetected . So why are the mandarins in the government tax department not being taken to task ? because they have allowed these loop holes to be created in the first place. The tail is wagging the dog and it has to stop.

They are the ones that facilitate these tax dodges to line their own pockets with other people's money.
Saxondale Posted 22 June 2012 Posted 22 June 2012 Celebrities rich DOZENS of celebrities are rich, it has emerged. The revelation that internationally-famous household names including Jimmy Carr and Gary Barlow have lots of money and behave accordingly has prompted outrage from hypocrites and the exceptionally slow. Dull-witted Tom Logan said: “I had assumed that Jimmy Carr wrote jokes for free, primarily to entertain the squirrels in his local park, and spent the rest of his time volunteering in an orphanage for blonde children with rickets. “Apparently one of the things that all rich people do is keep all their money in caves on islands, because by doing this it means they get to keep more of their money as opposed to less of it. “Personally, as a ****ing idiot I am always looking for ways to pay more tax.” Chief Hypocrite to the Treasury Danny Alexander said: “Pop stars and comedians should be governed by the powerful sense of moral integrity that permeates the media community, rather than just doing something because it is legal.” In a double blow to the taxpayer, it has also been announced that private sector companies will be allowed to start taking money directly from the public’s bank accounts. The move is designed to streamline the process of fleecing everyone, which had previously involved delivering massively overpriced milk, partially cleaning hospital wards or telling jobseekers how to spell their own names. Managing director Norman Steele said: “My company has been bilking the taxpayer for years by providing barely edible school dinners made from cheap Albanian tramp meat, but cutting out the ‘middle man’ means kids no longer have to get Hep C.” Hairdresser Donna Sheridan said: “I couldn’t work out why a company called Astradyne Consultancy took £2,400 out of my current account, because we tend not to use £800-a-day PFI consultants in the salon. Two days later I got a letter explaining that it would help pay for some undoubtedly vile little sod called Octavian to go to Eton.” http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/news/celebrity/celebrities-rich-2012062031308
AdamN Posted 23 June 2012 Posted 23 June 2012 I know the line so well but just can't think of the episode! ARG! Back on topic, 8 out of 10 Cats should be fun tonight The one where Bart inadvertently gets Krusty done for tax evasion and he ends up faking his death in a plane crash. "Ok, nothing to see here folksOH MY GOD! A HORRIBLE PLANE CRASH! Hey, get a load of this flaming wreckage! Come on, don't be shy, crowd around!" Rincewind Posted 23 June 2012 Posted 23 June 2012 Didn't seem to affect Jimmy Carr much on 9 out of ten cats. He used it to expose the loopholes even more. Quite funny when he said Gay Barlow had also used the scheme and received an OBE 'I wish I was in his shoes' It won't make a lot of difference to him. The ones who never liked or never cared about him one way or the other will still not buy his DVD's or see him live. The ones that liked him will still do the above. And he will gain some fans from the unsure lot. It happened with Ricky Gervais. Some religions nutter was hounding him on Twitter and he just responded with short quips egging this nutter on. This got him a piece in the newspapers extra followers and bigger sales of his merchandise. I wonder how many message forums have a topic 'Jimmy Carr' as a topic in General Chat? I'd like to bet that they have roughly the same number of replies as this one (depending on forum popularity of course)

Jimmy Posted 23 June 2012 Posted 23 June 2012 if what he was doing was totally legal he should of just told the papers to get fecked and carried on, its up to the Government to close the loop holes
Captain... Posted 23 June 2012 Posted 23 June 2012 if what he was doing was totally legal he should of just told the papers to get fecked and carried on, its up to the Government to close the loop holes I think there is a fair shout that he didn't know exactly how much tax he was avoiding, and has realised that only paying 1% of income tax is actually wrong, legal or otherwise. Like wolfie said, blame the accountants, they knew exactly what they were doing.
Rincewind Posted 23 June 2012 Posted 23 June 2012 I can imagine him giving his accountant a mouthful. He uses the eff word a lot in his shows. He was admitting he was wrong last night but in a satirical way which was probably for the program and up the ratings. In private I expect him to be pretty pissed off by it all and is trying to correct things. It may have been partly scripted though. I am sure programs like QI have the presenter scripted and the guests ad-lib so this could be the same. It allows for the off the cuff remarks and natual reaction from the presenter..

Webbo Posted 23 June 2012 Author Posted 23 June 2012 Accountants don't do these things without instruction. Jimmy Carr knew what he was doing and if he hadn't been found out he'd still be doing it. Fair play to him though, he's took full responsibility for it and not made any excuses. He's took it all on the chin and I've got to respect him for that.

breadandcheese Posted 23 June 2012 Posted 23 June 2012 I think there is a fair shout that he didn't know exactly how much tax he was avoiding, and has realised that only paying 1% of income tax is actually wrong, legal or otherwise. Like wolfie said, blame the accountants, they knew exactly what they were doing. His accountant's fee would have been based on a percentage of how much Carr was saving, so Carr would have known. I also notice that despite Carr's public contrition, he has not offered to pay back taxes on his earnings.
Rincewind Posted 23 June 2012 Posted 23 June 2012 He would have had to sign papers also. He is not completely stupid. He's been to a top university, studied politics so more than likely had inside info from the top. But whether he went through the intricate details with his accountant only he can say. It is possible he was given papers to sign and did so without scrutenising them as well as he should have done if he was too busy. Maybe his accountant fee was a standard rate or the charges were listed so as the accountant paid less tax. Why only use loopholes for clients?
Christoph Posted 23 June 2012 Posted 23 June 2012 Video of Jimmy getting roasted on 8 out of 10 cats. Pretty funny. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfMhfFWdDK0

Just a thought Nighty Your right he is clearly a clever bloke, so you would have thought he would have asked his accountant one important question " If this is legal and above board how come everyone else is not doing it ? " Carr is a liar he knew it was legal but he also knew it was immoral. He is a hypocrite who comes over all left wing and right on brother but all the while taking the piss out of the rest of us who have to take part in the pay as you earn system.
flowwolf Posted 24 June 2012 Posted 24 June 2012 This is a complete non issue, tax is immoral Stop paying it then and tell the government that. :D :D
