Captain... Posted 21 June 2012 Posted 21 June 2012 If this had been a tory MP instead of Jimmy Carr all the people defending him would be hitting the roof crying crocodile tears about benefits and the NHS. Partly because there is a moral issue here, and as a comedian who makes jokes about rape and incest, you kinda don't expect him to be the most moralistic person, whereas you do hope that the people responsible for running the country have integrity and are not just greedy money grabbing cvnts. Also because the government are aware of these legal tax loopholes they should be responsible for closing them down, and not exploiting them/excepting donations of those that do. Cameron is right when he says there is a moral issue here, but Carr and many others have proven time and time again, including those in government, that when it comes to paying tax there are very few who see it as immoral to take all legal routes possible to pay the least amount of tax.
Daggers Posted 21 June 2012 Posted 21 June 2012 Jimmy Carr is also a presenter, and gets paid to read a script he is provided. If you can prove he wrote it, fair enough. As it stands there is a team of writers on that show, and the PRESENTERS get paid to read out what's written. You think Lauren Laverne writes all her material on there? As someone who has co-written scripts I can assure you that the smarmy cvnt has the final say on everything he utters.

Babylon Posted 22 June 2012 Posted 22 June 2012 As someone who has co-written scripts I can assure you that the smarmy cvnt has the final say on everything he utters. What scripts have you written for him then Daggers? Lauren Laverne is the brains behind the show. Don't be fooled. Regardless of whether Jimmy Carr wrote the script or not, the 10 O'Clock Show is a left-wing political comedy show, on which he presents. He was the face of the tax avoidance satirical sketch. I think you expect too much from tv presenters.
Mack Posted 22 June 2012 Posted 22 June 2012 Pan Faced smug unfunny ****. I could'nt give a monkey's about his tax arrangements, pretty much all people in the top end tax bracket will be playing the system legally to their own advantage. Cameron slagged him off but I bet a pile of the Tory's own donors are on schemes.
Babylon Posted 22 June 2012 Posted 22 June 2012 Crikey I hope nobody moaning about this has bought anything from the likes of amazon or play... considering their prices are low due to avoiding tax via Jersey. You morally corrupt bastards. You should all go to HMV and pay £4 more in tax, think of the poor hospitals you are diddling.
flowwolf Posted 22 June 2012 Posted 22 June 2012 Thanks for that Babs , no more amazon for me I'm going straight from now on, I don't want to burn in hell.
Rincewind Posted 22 June 2012 Posted 22 June 2012 Yes and shop at M & S from now on instead of Primark.
Daggers Posted 22 June 2012 Posted 22 June 2012 What scripts have you written for him then Daggers? I've done a whole range of stuff for radio, television and print as a freelance contributor. The radio show we had in the North-East used to sponsor up and coming comedians like Ross Noble and we established stand-up comedy venues in Sunderland and Newcastle, introducing acts to the North-East from the London circuit. The gigs were taken over by the ENTs officers of the local Unis and most of the team apart from me went on to form successful careers in the media - one of them has been producer/ast producer and associate producer on all of the recent successful comedy shows including this one. I've earned pin-money through him while teaching but now hope to up my input to make a partial living from it.
flowwolf Posted 22 June 2012 Posted 22 June 2012 The funny thing is, he's probably still contributed more tax than most of us ever will, both directly and indirectly. If you imagine the tax paid on all the stuff he's bought (everything from a pint of beer to a flight to Antigua), plus the tax other people have paid buying his merchandise, not to mention the income tax that he does pay (even 1% of a million* is still £10,000) then I imagine the total starts to rack up pretty quickly. *feel free to swap this figure with whatever he does earn That's because he has probably earned more than any of us will. That is how tax is supposed to be, the more you earn the more you pay. it is designed to stop society falling in to anarchy because if the poor see the already rich not paying what they have to pay then envy and greed will meet head on.
flowwolf Posted 22 June 2012 Posted 22 June 2012 Yes and shop at M & S from now on instead of Primark. Oh my god don't tell me Primark are tax dodgers too ? I'm dressed head to toe in their gear what shall I do now if I don't want to go to hell ?

FoxyPV Posted 22 June 2012 Posted 22 June 2012 The scheme employed by Jimmy Carr is not an aim of government. However, the government should not cry about it or make tabloid gestures. If they do not believe in it, legislate.
breadandcheese Posted 22 June 2012 Posted 22 June 2012 I think this is the first time we've ever agreed on anything politically. Do you feel slightly dirty, too?

Jimmy Carr tax arrangements 'morally wrong', says David Cameron http://www.guardian....x-david-cameron errr but is this the same David Cameron ? http://www.telegraph...tax-havens.html
AdamN Posted 22 June 2012 Posted 22 June 2012 That's because he has probably earned more than any of us will. That is how tax is supposed to be, the more you earn the more you pay. it is designed to stop society falling in to anarchy because if the poor see the already rich not paying what they have to pay then envy and greed will meet head on. Of that I have no doubt. But I was talking more from a purely practical standpoint, in reply to posts like this (which I probably should have quoted to start with): People who say they wouldn't pay any taxes if they could get away with it would be the first to complain when they get mugged getting out of their car, which has fallen into a pothole in the dark because none of the streetlights are on. At least they'd be rushed to hospi... no wait. Everyone loves a bit of Randian rational self-interest when it comes to making or saving money, but I'm sure they'll be less keen when they get cancer and there are no hospitals, or when they come to send their kids to school and realise there are no schools left. My point being that he and many others will pay much more tax than 99% of us, regardless of whether they enter this scheme, and so would still have contributed more to hospitals, schools, maintenance, etc. It's not Jimmy Carr's job to fund the NHS - it's down to the government who are supposed to be enforcing whatever taxes they impose on society. If they allow loopholes like this, which are perfectly legal, then you can't start pointing fingers at individuals when they choose to exploit it. Unfortunately the media loves a scapegoat, so I'm sure instead of attacking the root of the problem, they'll drag the likes of Carr over the coals, which'll no doubt be fueled in part by people who simply didn't like him in the first place.
Rincewind Posted 22 June 2012 Posted 22 June 2012 It seems to boil down to a couple of things. First whether or not you like Jimmy Carr. If you don't it makes it a lot easier to slag him off for exploiting a loophole views are along the lines of 'he's an unfunny arrogant smarmy c%%t and by the way not a very nice man for paying less tax than me.'

If you don't it makes it a lot easier to slag him off for exploiting a loophole views are along the lines of 'he's an unfunny arrogant smarmy c%%t and by the way not a very nice man for paying less tax than me.' I like Jimmy Carr, I think what he did was legal, I think it was wrong for him and others to do so, but I don't blame them for doing so when it is allowed as a legal method of tax avoidance. I blame the government for making it legal for people to do this, and many other methods of tax avoidance.
Webbo Posted 22 June 2012 Author Posted 22 June 2012 I blame the government for making it legal for people to do this, and many other methods of tax avoidance. The govt, any govt, didn't make it legal they just didn't make it illegal. There are very clever tax lawyers constantly pouring over legislation looking for loopholes. The govt have to react to avoidance schemes and legislate in a way that can't be challenged in court. It takes time.
