accessory Posted 26 June 2012 Posted 26 June 2012 Look at this cartoon, which appeared in Gazzetta dello Sport the day of the England game..
VinceNoir Posted 26 June 2012 Posted 26 June 2012 errrr? I don't get it. King Kong, innit. Gorilla. Monkey. Racism.
Guest MattP Posted 26 June 2012 Posted 26 June 2012 King Kong, innit. Gorilla. Monkey. Racism. Ah got ya. Sorry Ultra I just saw it as a picture of Mario having conquered Big Ben, when I see a picture of something black having climbed up something I don't automatically think of a monkey. Am I the only one slightly baffled that someone would think someone wouldn't return to their homeland (probably to a heroes welcome as well) because of a cartoon?

Its not 'just because of a cartoon', its the general attitude over there towards racism in general. I'm sure the vast majority of Italians are not racist, but those who are seem to be accepted and attitudes like the one shown in the cartoon are tolerated much more over there.
MikeyT Posted 26 June 2012 Posted 26 June 2012 He's on Big Ben though. So isn't this more about them beating England than anything to do with racism? Or am I being too naive?
Guest MattP Posted 26 June 2012 Posted 26 June 2012 He's on Big Ben though. So isn't this more about them beating England than anything to do with racism? Or am I being too naive? Exactly what I thought.
foxfanazer Posted 26 June 2012 Posted 26 June 2012 He's on Big Ben though. So isn't this more about them beating England than anything to do with racism? Or am I being too naive? I think it's borderline and our press certainly wouldn't be able to print something like that

What do you mean "attitudes like in the cartoon"? This is just a fuss about nothing, complete nonsense, typical 21st century phoney outrage.
sw_fox Posted 26 June 2012 Posted 26 June 2012 What do you mean "attitudes like in the cartoon"? This is just a fuss about nothing, complete nonsense, typical 21st century phoney outrage. The point is that it could be extremely offensive to many people, and has racist connotations. If you cannot recognise that then I feel sorry for you.
Poakey Posted 26 June 2012 Posted 26 June 2012 What do you mean "attitudes like in the cartoon"? This is just a fuss about nothing, complete nonsense, typical 21st century phoney outrage. I think the only people that will cause a fuss are the type that go looking for things like this. To me it reads hes beaten England.
21st Century Fox Posted 26 June 2012 Posted 26 June 2012 It's clearly supposed to be King Kong, he's swatting away footballs like King Kong did planes!!
Raw Dykes Posted 26 June 2012 Posted 26 June 2012 I'm shocked that some people didn't get the King Kong reference. There's no doubt in my mind that the cartoonist is a racist. If he just really wanted to use the King Kong on Big Ben idea, he could have used any player who played against England. Funny how he just happened to pick the only black player in the team, isn't it?

Raw Dykes Posted 26 June 2012 Posted 26 June 2012 Yeah especially when it was pirlo that beat us and balotelli missed a host of chances Exactly! It wasn't like Balotelli single-handedly won the game for Italy. Pirlo was their best player. The cartoonist clearly thinks it's funny to liken a black man to a giant gorilla. I think it's sad that we're still not past all that shite.

He should stick to doing it to Peter Reid and Martin Keown where it's viewed as completely acceptable.
Jaspa Posted 26 June 2012 Posted 26 June 2012 Its definitely pretty racist I didnt want to say o'wt because of last time I said calling Heskey 'Bruno', was ever so slightly racist Can see him back there in a year or two if he does well, AC calling
Raw Dykes Posted 26 June 2012 Posted 26 June 2012 He should stick to doing it to Peter Reid and Martin Keown where it's viewed as completely acceptable. So you can't tell the difference between saying a person looks like an ape and saying that everyone of a whole race look like apes? Christ.
21st Century Fox Posted 26 June 2012 Posted 26 June 2012 He should stick to doing it to Peter Reid and Martin Keown where it's viewed as completely acceptable. You are kidding aren't you? How are Peter Reid's big ears anything comparable to the implication that an entire race are genetically inferior?
Guest MattP Posted 26 June 2012 Posted 26 June 2012 So you can't tell the difference between saying a person looks like an ape and saying that everyone of a whole race look like apes? Christ. That's why I don't get it, I don't actually think black people do look anything like apes.
Raw Dykes Posted 26 June 2012 Posted 26 June 2012 That's why I don't get it, I don't actually think black people do look anything like apes. Well, that's a very good response. I'm glad you don't. Sadly, this cartoonist and the newspaper's editor clearly do think that, and they also think that there are many others who will share their opinion and will be amused.
Captain... Posted 26 June 2012 Posted 26 June 2012 That's why I don't get it, I don't actually think black people do look anything like apes. Oh my god, you are such a racist, of course they look like apes, you just can't see it cos you're a racism denier!!!111!ONE! Personally I don't think it is racist, racism is the act of believing you are superior through your skin colour, this is clearly a celebration of Balotelli and his performance against England. It may be in bad taste, but I think that crying racism every time someone makes a joke involving a black person makes it much harder to actually tackle real racism.

Why would they be celebrating his performance against England, what did he do other than miss sitters?

Fair enough, think we'll leave it at that, I suppose we all have things we see differently.
