I know how to play, and enjoy playing occasionally with friend, but have to think of each move as it happens lol Cannot imagine seeing 10 moves in advance! :o

It's not so much seeing 10 moves in advance, it's seeing several possible outcomes branching from your next 3-4 moves is the skill.

Didn't see any chess games in the shop. They do have loads of classic books - on cassete if anyone still has a cassette recorder..

If you are into Retro stuff they have a good selection.

I play online and stuff, but I can't see many moves in advance, and if I see an opportunity I get excited and go for it and then realise two moves later it was a fvcking stupid idea.

It's something I'd genuinely love to be good at, but it's so frustrating lol

I must have or got rid of another electronic version. I'm sure I had one where I could set up a game say a Fishwer one and play the moves as per manual.

Supposed to be going to some gathering regarding a book launch (not mine) can't remember ifiy was 5 or 6 start. Should be on till around 8 though. There are refreshments provided although I've just had a curry.

In the Sue Ryder shop in Loseby Lane there is a drinking chess set with short glasses as pieces. Only problem is it looks as if one is missing. A black knigh/bishop? Don't know what price it's marked up at.

You can buy them for next to nothing on ebay.

But please let me know of any chess sets you get in.

Will do. It looks as if the shop do charge more for things than other shops of its kind. A lot of the items are decent quality though and as it is a Retro and Vintage shop shoppers tend to believe the goods are better.

A young bloke was helping with the displays and the manageress was enthusiastic about his imput. Asked him to stay a bit longer because she though his ideas on displaying was great. He seemed to have a knack for it.

I was stuck on the steaming.

They had a couple of guitars in there but I think they need restringing.. Not sure though if both were guitars. One looked too small.

I like to play, but after losing 3 times to an 8 year old I I've given up haha, the worst part is, he beat me within 8 moves in one of the games :(lol

Yes. I used to play quite a bit up to age of around 12. I then stopped until last year when I went to a local chess club and was told I'd have to go along for a year until they thought I was good enough to have a 'rating' and play competitively or something. I showed up twice and beat everyone I played except for one chap who was apparently a very good player and told me straight afterwards I'd never make a chess player and he wouldn't want someone so cavalier on his team. I think probably there are aspects of truth in that and a good quality player will usually beat me, but most of the people playing for the competitively made very elementary errors.

I have an iphone and ipad so presumably a few of us could get some apps and have a game?

lol

Sounds like that guy is a total c*nt! What, did you show up dressed like this, and challenge players to matches by slapping them in the face with your dueling glove?

I played a long, untimed game OTB at my library's club on Thursday--the game lasted over an hour, with a patient, meticulous bishop-pawn endgame. The longest time controls I've played since I started playing again have been 20 0 online (we usually play 10 0 at the library), so I was actually mentally exhausted after the game. I wish I would have recorded the game, so I could figure out where I went wrong losing a pawn with careless play in the opening (Ruy Lopez as white), but also so I could remember what I did to come back and squeeze out the win

When I play online, my games' moves are automatically saved in .PGN, but when I play OTB, I should get back into the habit of writing down my moves.

Oh, and if we actually get a few games going online, what suggestions do you have for server/apps? I play on the ICC on my PC and I currently have an Android phone, but don't have any mobile multiplayer chess apps on it.

an hour isn't a long game.

In league play it used to be (and probably still is) 35 moves in 1h20mins and then 6moves every 15mins. If a game goes less than 2 hours you were mismatched.

I thought I was pretty clear that I was writing in relative terms.

USCF recommends 40 moves in 120 minutes, followed by SD/60. FIDE is now using 40 moves in 90 min followed by SD/30 with 30 second increment on every move for most events. When I played for my high school team, we played 40 moves in 60 mins, followed by 30 moves in 30 minutes as necessary.

I'd guess most league play doesn't add delay/increments but most big tournaments do.
