cost to go to oz

Looking at going to Sydney for possibly 3 weeks. Anyone who's been, how much does it cost out there? I've heard eating out and drink especially is rather expensive. I suppose it'd be foolish not to do things like walking the bridge, etc so factor those costs in too.

I know it varies with how much you eat and drink, but worst case scenario, whats the most likely youd spend a day whilst not holding back?

I would say budget what you would for the UK, if you eat out every night, and go drinking and clubbing, it will be expensive, same as England prices more or less.

If you are on a budget there are plenty of cheap options for backpackers and bars and pubs that'll do you a cheap feed and drinks offers.

Far more expensive than here so budget for twice as long as you would, central Sydney around the rocks and the bridge I was paying upto $12 a pint which is £8 (and its a scooner which is 2/3 of a pint) Spirits well don't even go there.

Flights were £800 odd with Chinaair for me, very good airline, they let you drink your own duty free, get absolutely smashed and help yourself.

I stayed outside the centre in a place called Parramatta, its a suburb of Sydney and fantastic, two great local pubs and you can get a 20 min train or a 25 min boat down the Parramatta river into the city for about a fiver.

These apartments were great value and it you are staying central Sydney not much more expensive than a hotel.

Anything else let me know. Make sure you go though, it's one of best cities I've ever been to.

I imagine flights would be around £600/700 if you book in advance and then take 1500 for spending although depends what you want to do, if you want to explore and go on safaris n stuff then take more.

however going to Austrillia is like going in the Army you've got a bigger chance of dying than coming back alive I wouldn't risk it

You could squat in some hole where all the backpakers go but most people leave that behind at the age of 19 for a few quid a night, if your brother gets something you could try and jump in is place, save a fortune.

Very expensive, When I went I only spent 3 days in Sydney and it was 10 years ago, it was very cheap then - I got something stupid like 2.46 dollars to the the pound, now you are lucky to get 1.40 dollars to the pound, I managed to get £150's worth of dollars at 1.46 the other day.

I'd imagine Sydney will be one of the most expensive places in Australia, don't quote me on that, I always go Melbourne.

Beer is VERY expensive, outragously expensive, and bear in mind they generally drink pots (Which are half pints - Maybe just over half pints) I can't remember how much I was paying for a pint 2 years ago when I went, this sounds stupid - Unbelivable but sure I was paying near on £6 a pint - Like I say that sound too much, but I know it was a stupid price!

Eating again is very expensive, basically it's very expensive there.

When I went 10 years ago, it was dirt cheap, I was buying everything and anything just because it was cheap but every time i've been back it's got more and more expensive - obviously as the pound is worth less and less.

To get there it's going to cost me about £1200, but I am going at Christmas, bearing in mind that's there holiday time it's the prices go up around that time.

Mate was on about going to Brisbane in a year or so, as he has family out there. Would you say it'd be more or less expensive than Sydney?

Cheaper, not alot but would be cheaper.

Brisbane is less expensive that Sydney but still seems more expensive than England, Brisbane works out about the same as England though when you take the exchange rate into account. (About $1.55 for every £1)

Would love to go to Sydney, well anywhere in Australia really. My missus has been already - several times - the lucky sod

its just like england but sunny...not sure why so many want to visit not compared to all the other places....but I guess most like familiarity.

Have you been?

It really isn't.

yes....what made it so different?

Much better lifestyle, laid-back and easy going, much more strict on rules and they stick to their rules, beautiful country, very cultural, clean and it's so vast that you can go to the next state and it's like being in a different country, friendly and outgoing people who on a whole will always chat and be friendly - Unlike here where it's head down and ignore everyone - Granted i'm sure there are friendly people in other countries aswell but if we're comparing England with Australia...

Oh and as you said it's sunny - That fact on it's own makes it better than England. (I believe this winter has been the worst for years in Melbourne in particular - Not sure about the rest of Australia, but still sounds like they've have a better winter than we have summer!)

The only major downfalls I can come up with is it's very expensive and the distance it is from England to Australia, but they are things we simply can't effect unfortunatly.

But I suppose nothing lives up the USA! USA! USA! to you...

The lifestyle is mainly due to the weather...outdoor, beach etc...like I said its like england but sunnier.

I didn't think they had strict rules at all...especially compared to england....but I guess thats a good thing.

Cant see how Australia can be said to be any more beautiful than england....as for culture are you kidding me how many countries have more culture than ours especially compared to aussie which is in comparison a young country.

The weather arguement always baffles me...its sunnier so its better...laugable.

And as for the USA comment I've said it before but you obviously choose to ignore it, I rank England much higher than the USA on so many levels.

It all depends on what you like about a country i guess. Most people i know who've been to AUS said they were very impressed. To be honest when you go on holiday a country might seem better because you are on holiday there.

Its a lovely country but the feeling I got was of familiarity so not sure why Matt thought it was so different to the UK, I cant think of another place I've been thats so similiar...but hey ho.

p.s. Hasn't it been a beautiful week, I've been sitting in my lovely english garden overlooking the incredible rolling hills in the lovely sunshine...wonderful.

Australia has never appealed to me much that really :dunno: I do fancy going to NZ though
