Okay, I think my annoyance is more to be directed at the people (nothing personal) than the initiative itself then. Why wait for such an initiative? It's good the NHS are trying to get people to stop and I appreciate that they are.

I know it's not easy to quit, but my final point from my original comment does still stand - if you had the willpower and belief to quit, you would have done it by now. Don't wait for a certain time in the year to stop smoking.

I dont think people are WAITING for next month. I would suggest that the NHS initiative has encouraged more people who previously HADN'T thought about quitting at all to give it a go now.

You missed one of the main points of my post. Stix handily illustrates it.

I was a 20 a day smoker until 5 January this year.

Not had one since.

No patches, gum or anything.

I won't lie. The craving doesn't really diminish and people who packed it in 10 & 20 years ago say they still want to smoke, too.

If you are giving up, I would suggest that every time you want a ciggy, you inhale and exhale very deeply and think about how much easier that is to do without emphysema...

I quit smoking in January of this year after a few years of smoking. Mainly because I started going to the gym, and It just felt so stupid to go the gym then have a fag. It was actually easy for me, but I do still miss it. Smoking is MASSIVELY over stigmatised in this country though. Over taxed too. Yes its bad for you and obviously it is best not to do it, but so are a lot of things that don't get the same treatment. Good luck to anyone doing this thing though! Not sure if it will work nationally, but its worth a go.

Thats the only thing I can think of that will show me the benefits- going running again and seeing how unfit I am
