Grey Fox Posted 1 October 2012 Posted 1 October 2012 The Huddersfield game is massive for me. It won't be easy, but win that and for the first time in a long time I will start to think about the top 2 being a real possibility for us. Why? Because I think we will also beat Bristol, and that would leave us on 21 points from 10 games. That would be more than 2 points per game over a 10 game period, and most years that is good enough for a top 2 finish. I think that normally if a team can get over 20 points from their first 10 games, they nearly always end up finishing in the top 2. I would like to see some stats on that if anyone has any? (over 20, not 20) I know that Southampton had 22 points after 10 games last season. That set them up for the rest of the season. Winning becomes a habit, just like losing does. It's nice to see a side capable of getting into that habit at last.

LJS Posted 1 October 2012 Posted 1 October 2012 I also agree with Grey Fox's post. That said, even a defeat won't spell disaster. I think it was Col who described the Middlesbrough result as having given is a bit of breathing space. I'd go along with that. But win the next two and we have to consider ourselves genuine challengers. We'd probably be top of the league in that case.

What on earth happened to Cardiff to start that well and to finish 13th!!! That really is an incredible swing in form.
cc_star Posted 1 October 2012 Posted 1 October 2012 Lets also not forget the majority of teams we've played have been in the top third, certainly top half when we played them Other teams riding high haven't had the difficult start we've had

As Waller said above, WTF happened to Cardiff!
marbelladave Posted 1 October 2012 Posted 1 October 2012 I agree .... I love this style of football .... it's great to watch, and genuinely makes a huge difference to me - I'd rather watch good football than win at all cost football. I'm really surprised that we've used as many as 21 players this season!!! It seems like we've had an even more settled side than that! 18 man matchday squad, very settled indeed......
Grey Fox Posted 1 October 2012 Posted 1 October 2012 Lets also not forget the majority of teams we've played have been in the top third, certainly top half when we played them Other teams riding high haven't had the difficult start we've had Exactly, look at who Brighton have played for example. They have only played 2 top half sides, and only got 1 point from those 2 games.
stockyfox Posted 1 October 2012 Posted 1 October 2012 As I've said before elsewhere on this board, our style of play latterly is not only very attractive to watch but is also exciting. The bookies rarely get it wrong - and certainly not twice on the trot! Yes! I can feel it in my bones. We are going back to the higher eschelons of Premier football - and one has to sympathise with the moaners because I reckon they might find that the only thing they can moan about is that they've got nothing to moan about -if you follow that! 5waller5 Posted 1 October 2012 Posted 1 October 2012 Certainly seems less, maybe they counted the cup games as well Oh yeah - the Burton game would explain it if they did. Damn that Burton game!!!

Or have we won the other 2 already and really it's next week
marty78 Posted 1 October 2012 Posted 1 October 2012 Can you re do for 8 games? lcfc1994 Posted 1 October 2012 Posted 1 October 2012 Playing around with the table on statto.com and although we might have been playing games inconsistantly, if you look at the table finishes for us since we came down from the prem: 2004-2005 - 16th 2005-2006 - 16th 2006-2007 - 19th 2007-2008 - 22nd 2008-2009 - (League 1) 1st 2009-2010 - (championship) 5th 2010-2011 - 10th 2011-2012 - 9th 2012-2013 - this is our season!!!!

Thanks for the reply.
Large Frank Posted 2 October 2012 Posted 2 October 2012 If our current points per game was projected forward over the full 46 games we would have 86 points by the end of the season, which would certainly be sufficient for the play off, and knocking on the door of automatic promotion. Eight games may well not be sufficient to be too confident about this prediction, but on the positive side we have improved our form since the beginning of the season and we have also played a significant number of teams currently in the top half of the league to gain our points. Also, it does look, at the moment, as if it is going to be a competitive league with no team able to establish itself at the top, which suggests the automatic promotion marker is going to be relatively low. Early days!
Lambert09 Posted 2 October 2012 Posted 2 October 2012 I made a post after the blackburn game about how well I thought we would do. Even in our defeats we have played some great football. Nigel just seems to have got the balance right. The only thing that stops me truly believing is the striker situation. If nugent or Vardy got injured or banned we would struggle for goals. Although if Nigel put Knocky upfront it would be so exciting
Raw Dykes Posted 2 October 2012 Posted 2 October 2012 I know this is wishful thinking, but if there are any stattos looking for something to do, I think it would be interesting to see just how difficult our fixture list has been so far in comparison to other clubs. Maybe award points for each club according to where they are in the table right now, and add up the points for each fixture each club has played so far. Or work out the average position of the clubs played so far. For example, we've played P'boro (24th), Charlton (20th), Blackburn (4th), Blackpool (7th), Wolves (3rd), Burnley (16th), Hull (8th), M'boro (11th). Average position = 11.625. If anyone can be bothered to work this out for any other clubs, that would be appreciated.

I have awarded points based on league position so if a team has played Brighton (1st position) they get 1 point and that means the lowest totals equals the hardest games. Hope that makes sense. I have gone down to ninth only. Brighton - Home = 50 Away = 64 Total = 114 Cardiff - Home = 25 Away = 47 Total = 72 Wolves - Home = 54 Away = 58 Total = 112 Blackburn - Home = 37 Away = 67 Total = 104 Leicester - Home = 55 Away = 38 Total = 93 Huddersfield - Home = 64 Away = 53 Total = 117 Blackpool - Home = 49 Away = 51 Total = 100 Hull City - Home = 64 Away = 38 Total = 102 Leeds Utd - Home = 32 Away = 48 Total = 80 Another 3 of the fancied teams: Forest -Home = 61 Away = 43 Total = 104 Birmingham = Home = 75 Away = 58 Total = 133 Bolton - Home = 58 Away = 50 Total = 108 If anyone wants to check another team just use these two links in different tabs for a quick look: http://www.statto.co...2012-2013/table http://www.statto.co...13/results-grid

It shows how well Cardiff have done. They are rapidly becoming one of my favourites for a top 2 place. I still think the next two games, and in particular tonight's game will show roughly where we will end up (when added to the last 8 games). This is what I think the points from the next 2 games will show: 6 points = We are on for a top 2 finish 3-4 points = We are on for a top 6, play off finish 2 points or less = We are still only a mid table side For the record, thinking 4, hoping for 6.
Ric Flair Posted 2 October 2012 Posted 2 October 2012 Cardiff look very good this year, but it's no surprise given their squad, their manager and the fact that they've consistently been in the top 6 now for several years. Their attackers are ridiculous, no idea how Mackay can keep them all happy.

marty78 Posted 2 October 2012 Posted 2 October 2012 Yeah, Cardiff look the stand out team at the moment.
