Best Start in the Championship for a decade and other numbers

Leicester got their first away win of the league campaign and won three league matches for the first time in 19 months. This was a big win for Foxes who saw the ball break for them just at the right moments. They climb into the playoff positions for the second time this season – as many times as they managed in the entirety of the last campaign. Now to stay there…

The key numbers;

10 – A total of 15 points from eight matches represents Leicester’s best start at this level for a decade. Not since 2002/03 have City won so many points from their opening run of games. Back then six wins and a draw (and an oft forgotten 6-1 pummelling at Ipswich) saw Leicester in 2nd place. 19 points would have put City top this season, but if the weekend is anything to go by it looks like no-one will run away with the Championship this year.

21 – Nigel Pearson has used 21 players so far this season. Only Derby County (19) have used fewer. The City boss has named an unchanged starting eleven for each of these last three victories. The side is starting to pick itself.

58 – Leicester held the ball better in this match than in any other this season, a statistic that confirms (despite the defections) that City were worthy of their win. Only once so far (at Blackburn) have City’s opponents had the advantage in terms of possession.

I feel it goes at least some way to vindicating us that supported Pearson and wanted him to be given time. Saying that, there is still a long way to go and like the title suggests, this is only the start. We could go on an abysmal run of form from here and be loitering near the relegation positions for however long.

For this reason I'm a big believer of the 'one-game-at-a-time' approach. This way we don't get too excited and we don't get to down in the dumps. I said recently this is the most positive I've felt since the start of Sven's spell in charge and it's not surprising it's come as we've won 3 on the trot for the first time in 19 months.

We look to be in a promising position at the moment and these stats (although I'm sure someone will post some that show us in another light) are a welcome sight.

Pearson out!

With regards to the last stat for the Blackburn game the stats are wrong on the BBC website who had Blackburn edging posession when anyone who watched the game we had more possession in their final third than they had all over the pitch

I thought most people that went to the game and reported afterwards said that we had more possession against Blackburn?

Whoever seems to be in charge makes continuous mistakes. Like the Hull game having us down as only 5 shots on target. When the highlights had 6 in them let alone the half chances.

13 points and without an away win (drawn 3 lost 1). We were 7 points behind leaders West Brom and 6 points behind second placed Newcastle.

Good to put in to perspective then. I recall us having a good October under Pearson, that away win at QPR put us about 3rd didn't it?

What a great night that was. Probably my favourite game of the last 5 years.

On November 1st we were 4th after 15 games played and just 1 piont of top but Newcastle had a game in hand. A very good run in October W-3 D-2 L-0.

I think we did have more possession for most of the game, but if I remember correctly after they got the second goal, they just kept the ball and looked to see the game out.

All the Oct games this season are pretty winnable or at least drawable (is that a word?)

Huddersfield A

Brizzle H

Brum A

Brighton H

Palace H

None of those fixtures scare me particularly.

Well that just proves that stats alone do not tell the full story of a match, we dominated almost the whole game in my opinion and were very unlucky not to come away with the win.

To be honest I don't see the need to fear anyone either at home or away. Any match is winnable in this league if you play well and any match is losable if you don't. Drawable is not a word but I think everyone would know what you meant.

Three wins and a draw from those fixtures would be very nice and would keep us in the top six I would imagine. Dependant on other results ten points could even put us in the top two.

Huddersfield will be tough, in my opinion, but if Watford can get three points there (no disrespect) and we can win at Middlesbrough, then we can win at the Galpharn. Think we can get something at Birmingham as well.

Good read.

I think everyone was doubting us these first 8 games as we had some tough games but the team has came through this and we are just one point from the top, if we can start to beat the 'weaker' teams this year in which we have failed previously then we stand a very good chance of being in the top six come the end of the season.

Another thing which we have this year is a stronger midfield and TWO strikers who know where the net is, its looking good put it that way...

Every season is different, this year there appears to be no outstanding teams.

What I find most encouraging is our new approach, it is both attacking and possession based and actually something approaching decent modern football.

Clearly a work in progress, we seem to moving away from that dreadful stretched 4-4-2 with which we started the season to something altogether more flexible. Confidence must be high too.....

Without going totally 'gung ho', we need to keep this going, two good results in the next few days and we go into the break in really good shape...... :scarf:

It pretty much makes the 'team for ????' thread redundant.

It's been a long long time since we could even think about the team picking itself.

3 consecutive league victories for the first time in 19 months. It isnt so negative to predict our consistantly inconsistant form wont return.

Enjoy it while it lasts I suppose. WEM-BER-LEY WEM-BER-LEY

I agree .... I love this style of football .... it's great to watch, and genuinely makes a huge difference to me - I'd rather watch good football than win at all cost football.

I'm really surprised that we've used as many as 21 players this season!!! It seems like we've had an even more settled side than that!
