RobHawk Posted 10 October 2012 Posted 10 October 2012 Haven't seen much about the Party Conferences on here and i love reading a good ol fashioned foxestalk political ding dong! So we had Lib Dems - Nick clegg desperately trying to show that he's not a puppet to the conservatives, saying how hard it is being the little guy but being determined to make the rich pay their way! (So far so good Nick! Nice one!) Labours 'One Britain' with Ed Milliband firing out the blocks to try and show people he's not just a Wallace look a like! and now Conservatives - 'Sink or Swim' and 'Can rise again' (suggesting its already sunk? Cheers Dave!) on top of the £10billion cut in benefits announced by George yesterday. So what are peoples thoughts?

Miliband was fairly good, far better speech than anyone expected and he showed that he's not the complete liability the Tories think he is, not sure about the "One Nation" trait he was coming out with, Cameron had it right today when we know it's not "One Nation" with Labour but "One Notion" - borrow and spend. Had David Miliband won the Labout leadership contest I think they would have a chance at getting back into power, I don't think Ed will manage that though he'll do better than many think. One good thing I was impressed with about him was he seemed to want to take Labour back to the actual working class rather than Brown who seem to want to court the underclass. Tories stuff was pretty standard, glad he stuck to what Conservatives should do, aspiration, people wanting to better themselves, workers not shirkers. Voting is so widespread nowadays though I can only see hung parliaments for the forseeable future. An overall majority will be so hard to achieve.

Meanwhile hitting the most vulnerable in the pocket whilst leaving their rich buddies alone, all whilst overseeing continued humiliation when trying to generate growth and job creation. They will bleed too many votes to UKIP whilst a great deal of Liberal Democrats will transfer "home" to Labour.

I don't vote for the Tories for warm and fuzzy, I vote for them for proper Conservative Thatcherism and that's why if Call me Dave isn't careful he loses my vote to UKIP as well. No idea where this notion has came from that all Conservatives want to see their party with compassion. Yeah they did have a big own goal at the last election to work with, problem is when the government in office at the time has that many people reliant on them financially it's a pretty hard thing to overcome.

I'm not convinced that the Tories are doing the right thing on the economy, but if labour are allowed anywhere near it it's a guaranteed disaster. The lesser of two evils prevails as ever.

Likewise "looking after their rich buddies" and "remaining competitive against other major financial centres and ancouraging wealth creation". You may be right on UKIP though. A move to bring UKIP back into the fold would be a huge achievement.

The fact that they had the video clips on there was the reason I posted them.

I merely found an outlet that was showing two awful speeches made by two dreadful politicians. I never said there was a story. The Guardian are doing no more or no less than every other media is doing. Showing clips of the speeches. I'd like to watch the entirety of Cameron's speech. I don't know if I have the stomach for it, but in between retching I might hear the key message and buzz words that his scriptwriter has shoehorned in to as per usual stir the big bullshit pot. The same goes for Millband. This is quite possibly the worst bunch of twats I've seen for a long time.

Well before my thread was merged, I was referring to the speech specifically and nonsense, rhetoric, and same old same old from those that have no real purpose but to look after themselves and their cronies.

Yes, we all agree its rubbish (as are all party conferences). Now hopefully the country can focus on what's important - policies to get us out of recession. All parties (from what I can tell) are in agreement too, we need a strong private sector to drive our growth, a reactive private sector to support (not inhibit) it, and a spending policy more in line to what our national income is. Its not rocket science. Policies like this will win the next election, not the speeches made by (quite frankly) lacklustre politicians who believe that our votes are won on party political nitpicking and media led propaganda - at least I hope they aren't else we deserve everything we get!

This is why it's so hard for politicians to step back and look at the necessary but often unpopular bigger picture. Obviously decisions will needs to be made for the wider good that will impact people really hard, in the same way where somebody works in the private sector and his company goes bust / has to make cut backs to stay afloat. It's why I don't envy politicians or business leaders their jobs.

That way, you yourself may be able, with the right motivation and ability, to change things for what you consider to be for the better. Whatever people's opinions are on Cameron, he's the PM. In politics, the top of the pile. In most cases, you don't achieve this by being 'a twat' or thick or stupid. You might not like him, his policies or his party. But I respect him for what he has achieved in politics. But that won't be a popular opinion because its not 'cool' to even suggest it.
