Zingari Posted 18 December 2012 Share Posted 18 December 2012 Lisening to the song Stoney End by Barbara Streisand the other day I realised the lyrics were about something more personal and not an actual place The song was written by Lara Nyro I looked up the meaning and it's about her own struggle with lesbian tendencies and the conflict of her christian biblical upbring which taught her that these women were stoned to death . Laura Nyro Stoney End I was born from love and my poor mother worked the mines. I was raised on the good book Jesus till I read between the lines. Now I don't believe I want to see the morning. Going down the Stoney End, I never wanted to go down the Stoney End. Mama, let me start all over. Cradle me, mama, cradle me again. I can still remember him with love light in his eyes, but the light flickered out and parted as the sun began to rise, now I don't believe I want to see the morning. Going down the Stoney End, I never wanted to go down the Stoney End. Mama, let me start all over. Cradle me, mama, cradle me again. Never mind the forecast cause the sky has lost control, cause the fury and broken thunder's come to match my raging soul, now I don't believe I want to see the morning. Going down the Stoney End, I never wanted to go down the Stoney End. Mama, let me start all over. Cradle me, mama, cradle me. Going down the Stoney End, I never wanted to go down the Stoney End. Mama, let me start all over. Cradle me, mama, cradle me again_ This got me thinking there must be many songs around that have meanings that are not that obvious to the casual listener . Anyone know of any interesting ones ?
LcFc_Smiv Posted 18 December 2012 Share Posted 18 December 2012 I don't know if it's not obvious, or I'm just an idiot and never realised, but 'A Thousand Trees' by Stereophonics. Standing at the bus stop with my shopping In my hands when I'm overhearing elder Ladies as the rumors start to fly you can Hear them in the school yard, in the scrap yard In the chip shop, in the phone box, in the pool hall at The shoe stall every corner turned around It started with a school girl who was Running running home to her mam and Dad told them she was playing in the Change room of her local football side they Said tell us again so she told them again They said tell us the truth they found it hard To believe 'cause he taught our Steve he Even trained me taught uncle john who's Father of three But it only takes one tree to make A thousand matches Only takes one match to burn A thousand trees A thousand trees I suppose it's how you interpret it, but to me it's saying it only takes one person to spread many rumours, but it only takes one rumour to ruin the reputations of others. The People's Hero Posted 18 December 2012 Share Posted 18 December 2012 Faster than the Speed of Light - Bonnie Tyler. Is actually an ode to the brevity of David Speedie's lovemaking endeavours.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 18 December 2012 Share Posted 18 December 2012 Many songs about drugs Drain you by nirvana Golden brown by the srtanglers Add to that There She Goes by The La's. My mum and many of her generation think it's, and I quote, "a lovely song." Erm... it's about shooting up heroin? Same goes for Perfect Day. anotherharboroughfox Posted 18 December 2012 Share Posted 18 December 2012 Everything Everything - My Keys, Your Boyfriend. Most of their album deals with various topics and all their lyrics are amazing. You only start to understand them if you put deep thought into it. Lucifer you're landing Cross-hairs on the kitchen sink Barb-wire in the Bathroom I can't make new memories since Flashbacks to the time this Shell-shocked apartment was the place I met with your boy It's a mortal Thing, yeah it's a mortal thing Oh! he looked at me funny and a Oh! oh! think Our secret's out and a Oh-ooh-oh I try to explain But then munitions rain, And we're the epicenter It's like I'm watching the A4 paper taking over the Guillotine, It's like I'm watching the A4 paper taking over the Guillotine And I wanna know what happened to your boyfriend Cos he was Looking at me like "Whoa!" Yeah right before the kitchen was a dust bowl And Tossing me the keys and I can't forget how Everything just coming through the Windows And half the street was under my nails It's like we sitting in the Faraday cage, When the lights all failed I fly through the walls All Pieces colliding and I See Raymond apart He'a a frowning now, wagging a Finger at me "boy!" his knees bend the other way and "boy! boy!" are you guys Together honey? "b..b..boy!" oh but now I can't find his torso, mm hm hm I Guess you're separated ooh, Monica I just wanna know, ooh It's like I'm Watching the A4 paper taking over the guillotine, (Monica I just wanna know) It's like I'm watching the A4 paper taking over the guillotine And I wanna know what happened to your boyfriend Cos he was looking at me like "Whoa!" Yeah right before the kitchen was a dust bowl And tossing me the Keys and I can't forget how Everything just coming through the windows And Half the street was under my nails It's like we sitting in the Faraday Cage, When the lights all failed Lucifer you're landing (six cars the driveway oh I do believe it will be business inside) Cross-hairs on the Kitchen sink (it's a real spanner into my works I think I kicked the bucket) Baby's on the bulls eye (do believe it will be business inside) I Can't make new memories since, ries since, ries since. And I wanna know What happened to your boyfriend Cos he was looking at me like "whoa!" Yeah Right before the kitchen was a dust bowl And tossing me the keys and I can't Forget how Everything just coming through the windows And half the street was Under my nails It's like we sitting in the Faraday cage, When the lights all Failed And now everybody gotta go hungry And everybody cover up their Mouths And I haven't seen the body count lately But looking at your faces it Must have been bad And if everybody answered their phone calls But people Say the army's on fire It's like we sitting with our parachutes on When the Airport's gone. anotherharboroughfox Posted 18 December 2012 Share Posted 18 December 2012 The song writer himself says it's about the idea of a full on nuclear war and what would be important if that did happen. Some of their lyrics are really cryptic though :xmastongue:

Trav Le Bleu Posted 20 December 2012 Share Posted 20 December 2012 More Than Words by Extreme is about recieving a blowjob. No really. Saying I love you Is not the words I want to hear from you It's not that I want you Not to say, but if you only knew How easy it would be to show me how you feel More than words is all you have to do to make it real Then you wouldn't have to say that you love me 'Cause I'd already know What would you do if my heart was torn in two More than words to show you feel That your love for me is real What would you say if I took those words away Then you couldn't make things new Just by saying I love you More than words Now that I've tried to talk to you and make you understand All you have to do is close your eyes And just reach out your hands and touch me Hold me close don't ever let me go More than words is all I ever needed you to show Then you wouldn't have to say that you love me 'Cause I'd already know What would you do if my heart was torn in two More than words to show you feel That your love for me is real What would you say if I took those words away Then you couldn't make things new Just by saying I love you Honest. Finnegan Posted 23 December 2012 Share Posted 23 December 2012 I suppose it's how you interpret it, but to me it's saying it only takes one person to spread many rumours, but it only takes one rumour to ruin the reputations of others. Not quite, mate. A lot of people assume that but it's more about how one fairly brief event can ruin a life. It's about a well liked kids' coach that nobs a female student and whose reputation goes to pot. Most of Word Gets Around is based on either true stories, local urban myths or daily life around Aberdare / Cwmaman / Cwmbach / Aberaman, etc "They all honour his name He did a lot for the game Got his name knocked up above the sports ground gates But they're ripping them down, stamping the ground Picture gathers dust behind the bar in the lounge"
