Christians and the Military

Saw a program the other night, think it was BBC4 or Two. about the Anglo-Saxon times and invassions from Vikings etc. It seems we were invaded from three different points. Romans South Vikings up North and the Saxons. All brought their own religions and tried to impose on the natives. Think we were Pagans at the time. So it's a matter of chance depend which religion gets into the natives brain that determines which god we follow. Look how many countries were happily worshiping Gods of sky Wind Rain etc until Christians turned up and said their invisible friend gave the better deal.

I'd be happy to worship the God that allows me to live my life as I have, am doing at present .or going to in the future. One that says YOU decide.

And what religion is stopping you doing that now?

Not heard of one that does not have a set of rules to live by. Does not matter anyway as I do not believe an invisible friend.

If you took all the killings, miracles and references to gods and Messiahs out of holy books it would be about right and you'd have a leaflet for the Secular Society which is not a religion.

I have never been able to understand why anyone would give a moments thought to the opinion of a religious leader on anything at all.

I've never been able to understand why we let the mad freaks access our system of governance.

Well, when i joined the Navy back in the late 80s they catered for a few religions.

I was going athiest at the recruiting place but the officer kept pressing me to actually write a religion down so instead i had to put CofE.

Remember seeing a few Sikhs in navy blue turbans instead of beret, very smart looking too.

I was down the recruiting office not so long ago and asked about going atheist. They heavily suggested anyone put CofE and the reason being was that if you put atheist you would likely be the first person selected for patrols/duties over Christmas. "Even if it doesn't mean anything to you, put CofE."

Back then you had to attend the church service for your chosen religion a minimum of four times regardless, so you had to put something down, it might have changed since then of course.

Good thing about the church service was the vicar or whatever you called him gave us free coffees afterwards if you wanted and he was quite a jovial person who understood what a tiring grind training could be.
