RobHawk Posted 4 January 2013 Posted 4 January 2013 Mentioned in another thread that I am a Money Adviser in a university and for people to let me know if they want info about student finance but figured it would be more worthwhile just to create a thread. That way other people may also be able to advise on any situations! So we are a nation in debt full of financial problems! Anyone got any questions put them in here! I personally deal with Student Finance, Benefits, Debt and general financial literacy! My one proviso would be if you don't know what you are talking about please don't reply to people asking questions! nothing worse than bad financial advise!

What is the best way for me to hide my earnings from the HMRC in order that I don't have to pay off my student loan each month? Would you suggest that cash in hand payments or simply a generous, unreceipted expense account would work better?
RobHawk Posted 4 January 2013 Author Posted 4 January 2013 Tax avoidance isn't my thing to be honest! however i will always try and point somebody in the right direction!!
RobHawk Posted 4 January 2013 Author Posted 4 January 2013 I try to point people in one direction One direction? You clearly need the "Mental Health Support thread" - Only i'm not sure its been created yet!
Rincewind Posted 4 January 2013 Posted 4 January 2013 Here is my advice list 1 Do not spend more than you have 2-100 see number 1
Zingari Posted 4 January 2013 Posted 4 January 2013 My question is this If financial experts are so fookin clever at dishing out advice to us , how come the economy ( presumably run by even more expert financiers) always seems to be in the shit creek ?

For the same reason Alan Hansen will never be a football manager. Can talk the talk..........but hasn't got a clue. An expert in moaning & repeating the same old shit!!
Daggers Posted 4 January 2013 Posted 4 January 2013 For the same reason Alan Hansen will never be a football manager. Can talk the talk..........but hasn't got a clue. An expert in moaning & repeating the same old shit!! So the economy should be run by people who are totally inexperienced with financial matters?
Zingari Posted 4 January 2013 Posted 4 January 2013 So the economy should be run by people who are totally inexperienced with financial matters? i reckon it should be run by bookies
pSinatra Posted 4 January 2013 Posted 4 January 2013 So the economy should be run by people who are totally inexperienced with financial matters? expert is an over-used term. what makes someone an expert on any given subject?
Daggers Posted 4 January 2013 Posted 4 January 2013 expert is an over-used term. what makes someone an expert on any given subject? Cetainly not being called 'Chancellor of the Exchequer' that's for sure.
Rincewind Posted 4 January 2013 Posted 4 January 2013 i reckon it should be run by bookies Its being run by the punters atm.
pSinatra Posted 4 January 2013 Posted 4 January 2013 Cetainly not being called 'Chancellor of the Exchequer' that's for sure. when you've always had money & then marry into even more money.....why waste any time trying to understand anything other than how to spend it?
Daggers Posted 4 January 2013 Posted 4 January 2013 I'm pretty sure the Money Saving Expert from www.moneysavingexpert.com is an expert about money stuff. He wouldn't be allowed to call himself that if it wasn't true.

Pfft I’ve watched him on telly and all he ever says is “get your loft insulated , change your energy supplier , turn your thermostat down , throw your granny on the fire ………â€any fooker can dish out expert advice like that

Still, that stuff about Gannies seems pretty sound to me although I do worry who we'd offer to staying guests in future.
SystonFox Posted 4 January 2013 Posted 4 January 2013 Have you got tomorrow's lotto numbers? Lend me a tenner...

RobHawk Posted 4 January 2013 Author Posted 4 January 2013 Well I'm glad to see this thread has been hijacked - although not as badly as it could have been. Anyways, I'm not a financial advisor, I'm a money advisor believe it or not they are different things. Given some of the recent threads on here about unemployment, benefits, payday loans and student funding - I thought I would offer my help should anyone need it. For the record I certainly don't have all the answers but I might be able to point people in the right direction. So that was the point of thread, not to tell people what to do or to fix the economy! That's George's job - he's not doing a very good job but we have numerous thread for that already! As for the money saving expert guy,he's just a very good journalist who can get points across in well learnt 2 minute rants! Take him away from the media and you don't have much. The website is very good though and he has a great team working on keeping it up to date and relevant! Feel free to carry on the conversation away from its intended path. I hope everybody on here has their finances in check and needs no advice. More importantly though I hope nobody feels too embarrassed to post their issues. Things don't get sorted by sticking your head in the sand and their is still stigma regarding people's finances.
Zingari Posted 4 January 2013 Posted 4 January 2013 sorry rob hawk for my part, i can't help myself for the most part hopefully peeps will ask sensible questions here on in
RobHawk Posted 4 January 2013 Author Posted 4 January 2013 No problem mate, I expected it and would have been the same if it was someone else! It's always good to set boundaries and to try and ensure people aren't put off asking serious questions though. I've already had a few PM's but I would rather its done out in the open to try and destigmatise (if that is a word) and also so others can browse and learn as well.

Cheers Rob Seriously, I don’t think a bit of humour or light hearted banter derails threads, in fact sometimes its more likely to keep the thread alive and gives posters more chance to dip their toe in the water and talk about stuff that might seem to be more embarrassing than it need be. . Anyway thanks for offering to freely give advice to posters that may need it
RobHawk Posted 4 January 2013 Author Posted 4 January 2013 It's alright! I'll do anything to keep myself distracted during transfers windows! Any things better than reading those bloody transfer threads! Yeah the humours all good! I just like to respond occasionally to keep the ship in the right ocean!

It is a worthwhile service you offer & people shouldn't feel bad about struggling.........there's a lot of us struggling at the moment. There was something I was wondering & it isn't about screwing the system, more to do with knowing the system. I recently became self-employed & there have been a few things that I have discovered along the way. They have not been illegal in any way (mostly) & they were only discovered by chance............cropping up in conversation with other self-employed people. I was just wondering if you are able to offer such advice should anyone have any questions? Or anyone who may have the answers to questions for anyone thinking of starting up on their own? This isn't necessarily directed at you. There seem to be a few people on here who appear knowledgeable in such matters & it would be good if we could help each other out.
