Job seekers Survival Guide

Tbh I don't blame Ken. If I was his age and his situation I wouldn't want to start a new job. I'd be quite happy to retire a few years early. It's just the constant moaning that grates a bit.

I was made redundant from a Senior Management position when I was 51 and it took me 2 years to find employment even then it was only part time and temporary and in a significantly lower level job that eventually disappeared as well.

The point people seem to miss regarding age/qualifications is that you can't get a job to match your qualifications because you're deemed too old and you can't get lower level jobs because employers think your using them as a stepping stone/temporary position.

I rarely if ever got any responses from the 100s of jobs I applied for all over the country this did pick up when I left out my age or put it at the end of the CV/application but still didn't lead to any interviews. The only interviews I had in 2 years was with some shady characters in pubs that just seem to be offering what appeared to be a variation of pyramid selling.

Fortunately I'd contributed to a company pension scheme for 30 years so had that to survive on and my redundancy although it did mean I wasn't eligible for any benefits but still had to sign on and attend regularly to get my NI paid up,

Anyone who thinks it easy for the young and inexperienced or old and experienced is wrong and the longer you're unemployed the harder it gets which I know from my recruitment experiences.

This.

It seems obvious that you are just waiting for your pension credits so you no longer need to find work. You deserve to be able to do that if you want of course after contributing for nearly 50 years.

But just be honest about it!! Do what you need to do until may or whenever you said it was and then relax. Moaning and making excuse after excuse about why this job and that job isnt suitable is tiresome. Not that you really give a toss but i would have a hell of a lot more respect for you if you just came out and said it the way it was, you are just giving others a whole load of ammunition to fire back at you each time you come on saying that you dont want this job because of such & such & this job's no good because the hours are shit, or its too far etc.

Pretty much this. The moaning but for me mostly how he represents the blame someone better off culture. He seems to think anyone who has a job is somehow to blame for his plight which is very much incorrect. It's his own fault he never he has never learned any skills, trades or professions which could help him find work. It's a bit irritating when he tries to pass the buck for that error onto people who have gained employable skills. Also a bit irritating when he assumes these people are somehow ignorant of his plight, these white collar workers who don't understand, as he says. His attitude is that he is somehow a victim in all of this. If anyone is a victim it is those who work hard on low incomes and do everything by the book but are forced into handing over their own hard earned cash to fund people like his mistakes. How he goes from there to him being a victim I do not know.

That's ignoring the whole "i don't want this job because it's evening work and that doesn't fit with my schedule" and "i don't want a free kitchen because it upsets my routine" crap that he regularly comes out with. At times his attitude is so ludicrously out of touch that I wonder if he's actually a really good troll.

But yeah, I don't mind him so much.

Wow. Touch heavy on the hyperbole there?

I find ironic how you've been unemployed for 18 months yet still find money to pay for your internet....Yeah must be really struggling.

I bet he pays about £2.50 a week for his internet. He's not really living the high life.

Should we start giving him a bag of rice and a few bottles of water per week instead of £7.50 a day spending money?

I'm quite happy to live in a country that helps out the financially worst off in society with a small cheque once a fortnight. The benefits system is not the reason our country, and much of the world, is in a financial catastrophe.

I've lived off it for some time and am happy to live on it in the future. I have adapted Even with higher qualifications I could be unemployed or even dead by stress caused by working too many hours or worry about my business. The thing about a stress free life is you tend to moan about things that will annoy others. Sorry if you are a victim.

I don't think there is such thing as a stress free life! Even when I have literally nothing to do, I still managed to be stressed about something.

But to be honest, if I was 61, I wouldn't consider looking for another job. I'd just do what I wanted to do. Life's too short.

I'll just limit my postings. Never know who's working for the Government and report me.

Is this why you've changed your picture?.

A wise move..

Thanks.Until recently I was worrying about finding work. Then reality struck me. Well not so much of strike more of a high five.

Ken, don't take any of it to heart.

Just don't bitch and moan about a free kitchen, when most of us would love a free kitchen. Mine is falling to bits and none of the appliances really work properly yet I'm just not going to be able to afford to do anything about it - so it does grate.

Fair enough. Sorry if it sounded like moaning. I am pleased about the kitchen really just want an instant one so will gladly accept the one I'm getting however it turns out. It will be a surprise.

I was NOT offered a security job. The staff at the job centre printed it off and after looking at the werb site and job description in more detail mate a decision that I would not have the requirements to do the job to a level that would be required and because of my low physical strength slow reflexes and age would be putting myself and other members of staff in danger if confronted by an aggressive 16 stone youth. The job was at a young offenders prison and included escorting and body searching.

Unfortunately using common sense is not an excuse for refusing a job.

Re other comments. I have been searching for jobs for 18 months. I have applied for jobs which I considered within my range of capabilities and have gotten nowhere. The majority not even a reply. I cannot put down on my sheet 'looked on jobsite saw nothing suitable' which is often the case, so I have had to apply for jobs that are slightly out of my range. If the ads do not specify qualifications I do not have or be a driver I send off for an application form. More often than not I do not get a response but it is what is required so as not to get sanctioned. I do not like the situation but as someone said my age is against me as well as my physical ability. That does not affect me enough to be classed as disabled but it prevents me from doing heavy lifting.

As for the 10 hour part time. What I earn will cancel out my JSA. I will receive benefits as I will be on a low wage which many people are. I could do 30 plus and still receive them. Also I will be doing something I enjoy and am able to do well instead of going through the motions of turning up for 12 hour shifts and my heart not being in it.

The OP was not necessary my viewpoint. I found it amusing in a way that there has to be a guide to survive and illustrates how difficult it is for genuine jobseekers tio find work. The ones that do not want work already know the guideline and have probably been doing it for years.

I'm in the same situation as you. I want to work but age and health problems are a barrier and I simply can't even get a response from employers, so I do what I have to do within the system to keep my JSA. I don't milk the system and have 30 kids I don't want, just to claim more money like some people. Any disposable income I have comes from good money management and saving. What I hate is being tarred with the same brush as people who have no intention of working, milk the system for every penny they can get and live a better lifestyle than millions that do work to just scrape by. Unfortunately, in our efforts to purge the system of these scrounging layabouts, genuine jobseekers are getting caught out by the ever changing rules and losing their benefits. Some may think a survival guide is a guide to avoid working but i'm very sad to say it's actually become a necessary thing for genuine joseekers just to keep what little we do have

I just do the best I can on what I get. I have learned to manage money better and not too bothered about money.

It just seems daft that one week next July I will get £71 and the following week £130. I would rather have a job paying twice that but if not I'll manage the best I can,

I have just deleted 10 minutes of typing. It might have been thought of as moaning.
