J.Lisemore Posted 24 March 2013 Posted 24 March 2013 Anyone ever been? ...find the whole thing quite interesting, and noticed tours opened in 2011. If anyone hasn't got a clue what I'm going on about... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-12982685
Trav Le Bleu Posted 24 March 2013 Posted 24 March 2013 Word of advice. Don't buy the souvernier underpants.
Alexikokopops Posted 24 March 2013 Posted 24 March 2013 I went about a month ago. I loved it. Strangely fascinating. Cost about $150 which included transport to and from Kiev, a tour (you need a permit to get in and out which you can only get if you're going with an official tour guide - they sort it all out for you) and food. They also stuck a documentary on in the minibus on the way which was quite handy for filling in any gaps before we got there. You can also rent Geiger counters which is fun, and you get quite close to the reactor. You get to go around Pripyat too. When I'm not sitting in A&E I'll try and dig out who we went with if you're interested. I got some cracking pictures too.
Leicfox Posted 24 March 2013 Posted 24 March 2013 Give this a watch before you go http://m.imdb.com/title/tt1991245/
Zingari Posted 24 March 2013 Posted 24 March 2013 Think I'll stick to Tenerife this year , thanks all the same.
FoxesAreBlue Posted 24 March 2013 Posted 24 March 2013 Give this a watch before you go http://m.imdb.com/title/tt1991245/ Don't waste your time, it's a crap film. The blonde is alright though
VLC86 Posted 24 March 2013 Posted 24 March 2013 Yep I went last year and it's well worth doing. Before you do it YouTube Chernobyl documentary, it fact watch it even if you don't go as it's fascinating. Alex... Did you have lunch in the canteen? They fed me this cream cheese pancake that was hands down the worst thing iv ever eaten
Deucalion Posted 24 March 2013 Posted 24 March 2013 50 000 people used to live here... now it's a ghost town.
VLC86 Posted 24 March 2013 Posted 24 March 2013 50 000 people used to live here... now it's a ghost town. You would be suprised with how many workers still live there
Bob Weasel Fox Posted 24 March 2013 Posted 24 March 2013 I think I would be blown away by this experience . . . . . In all honesty though joking aside I think it would be very interesting
Deucalion Posted 24 March 2013 Posted 24 March 2013 Having played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare One, lots of the pictures of the place look strangely familiar.
J.Lisemore Posted 25 March 2013 Author Posted 25 March 2013 Cheers for the responses lads, Did you go both go for just a the one-day trip? because I notice they offer 2/3 and even 4 days. I think the highlight for me would be to just walk around Pripyat, would be so strange but can imagine it would be amazing really.
VLC86 Posted 25 March 2013 Posted 25 March 2013 I went for just a day and it was more than enough. Make sure you stay in Kiev for a few days though, fantastic city

They fed me this cream cheese pancake that was hands down the worst thing iv ever eaten I did! That food was ropey at best (I didn't dare touch the borscht). That said, the cream cheese pancake was my favourite part Cheers for the responses lads, Did you go both go for just a the one-day trip? because I notice they offer 2/3 and even 4 days. I think the highlight for me would be to just walk around Pripyat, would be so strange but can imagine it would be amazing really. 1 day was enough I'd say. As Lcfc2013 says, you're better to spend the time in Kiev, especially if you go on a wander to the Museum Of The Great Patriotic War. There's shitloads of Societ helicopters/planes that you can pay about 20p to sit in and make machine gun noises like a child. Plus the museum is pretty impressive...
Finnegan Posted 25 March 2013 Posted 25 March 2013 Were machine gun noises part of the price? Would a silent sit have cost less?
Captain... Posted 25 March 2013 Posted 25 March 2013 Word of advice. Don't buy the souvernier underpants. ... Because Chernobyl fall out.
Alexikokopops Posted 25 March 2013 Posted 25 March 2013 Were machine gun noises part of the price? Would a silent sit have cost less? All inclusive my friend. It's a wonderous place.
Zingari Posted 25 March 2013 Posted 25 March 2013 ... Because Chernobyl fall out. Well done Trav for setting this up nicely for the punchline
notnow john Posted 25 March 2013 Posted 25 March 2013 We,as a family are involved with a charity called , Friends of Chernobyl's children ( F.O.C.C). The charity brings Children from the affected area ,which is mainly Belarus, for a months holiday in the U.K. These children are born with associated medical problems nearly 30 years on.
