leicsmac Posted 13 December 2013 Posted 13 December 2013 I remember that the Chinese used to come out with such rhetoric in pre-capitalist days: "running dog of capitalism" etc. Do you ever meet South Koreans who are in touch with relations/friends in the North? I suppose that it must be rare now, after all this time, with Korea having been divided for much longer than Germany now. You'd have to be a pensioner to have grown up in the same country as someone from the other side of the 38th parallel.... Send the odd dispatch about life in Korea, mate. I hope to travel a fair bit more before I'm forgotten ash, but don't imagine that I'll ever be in Korea. It does seem to be a pretty classic propaganda thing, isn't it? Sadly I've not met any Southerners who have relatives up there - it is a rare thing now, as you say. To be honest (and I've said this before) the majority of the Southern population seem to be more apathetic about what their Northern cousins are doing than the rest of the world. To them it's just another day and another country. I've talked to my coworkers about it from time to time but most of the time it actually turns out that I know more than they do. It does show up on the news of course, but for the most part people just get on with their lives. Most of the folk I've talked to would like reunification some day, but those that know about it also know it's pretty impractical financially - would cripple the economy. If you and other folk want me to talk more about things over here, I can - maybe post more in the 'How Was Your Day' thread?

I'm always interested to hear a bit about life in other countries. I did a fair bit of traveling when I was younger, but am unable to do so for now, due to finances and family responsibilities, so hearing other people's accounts is a bit of a substitute. Personally, if you do so, I reckon it'd be better to either start a new thread or post in this one. Maybe other people are different, but I only tend to look in "How Was Your Day?" on rare occasions when I've got a lot of time to kill. Normally, I just tend to pick specific threads that I know will interest me. "How Was Your Day?" gets a lot of posts, too, so easy to miss stuff in there...
Guest MattP Posted 13 December 2013 Posted 13 December 2013 Yeah I'd like to hear about about what you are getting upto in Korea.
cambridgefox Posted 13 December 2013 Posted 13 December 2013 He is mucked up fooked up. Although because of the closed doors the country intrigues me.There was a cracking documentary a month or so ago about secret cameras and people smuggling films in and how the people are really treated.cant remember for the life of me what channel or what it was called.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 13 December 2013 Posted 13 December 2013 Yeh I'd be interested in reading this too. I have a school friend over there at the mo. There can't be many Brits there?
Tom17LCFC Posted 13 December 2013 Author Posted 13 December 2013 Yeah no pressure haha but I'd be interested as well. Fascinated by that side of the world and the culture over there. Planning to do something similar to you in the future and move to the far east for a few years to teach English.

Vacamion Posted 13 December 2013 Posted 13 December 2013 "Worse than a dog", indeed. They are Koreans, so it will be a nice juicy dog, lightly fried with butter beans...

I'm away for the weekend (up in Seoul) so I'll write it when I get back. I'll probably start a new thread for it and miniblog, if the mods will allow it. There's actually quite a few Brits over here that I've met - as a guesstimate I'd say about 2-3000 in the country as a whole. They are Koreans, so it will be a nice juicy dog, lightly fried with butter beans... Summer meat, boiled to taste. And quite frankly it tastes fvcking awful.

The best docs I've seen are the Vice ones on YouTube. In three parts.
