leicsmac Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 Ignore the lunatic. Despite the fact the NK leadership appear to be dangerously deluded, the only real worry is China's empathy for them. The kindest thing to do, for the benefit of the millions of repressed and persecuted NK citizens who are sent to labour camps to be tortured and raped for daring to speak ill of the regime, would be to displace the leaders. If nobody's going to do that, we're best to just ignore their idle threats and not entertain his pathetic rhetoric. Regarding China, the threat of trade sanctions would pipe them down, should the need arise. Their administration knows very well that their entire economy is based on making shit cheaply for the rest of the world. Such a move would result in millions of casualties on all sides. The only way that regime is going to change is by internal revolution, possibly Chinese-backed. As for China, their military power is beginning to catch up with their economy. What's to say if trade sanctions were imposed that they wouldn't threaten the use of some of those shiny new toys? Probably not as they know that would trigger WW3, but... Bring it on. the west will nuke the shight out of them, this leader looks like the kid who got bullied in the playground, tiny knobbed bleeder, the north koreans are well balanced lot though, a chip on both shoulders. lets just wipe em off the map, to send a message. All it would take is one nuke from the US and its game over. Yeah, let's nuke them. Surely there's no chance they have already anticipated this and won't then retaliate against South Korea with their own nukes, killing millions along with people I know personally. Smart move. Any overt move against North Korea will result in a war which will make Afghanistan and Iraq look like a fight in a kids playpen. Unlike them, these guys have been prepared for war for 60 years, and have large, large amounts of decent hardware to back it up. I'm not saying the US/SK won't win, but it would be a bloodbath before they did.

The only way to do this would be by using some sort of intelligence to have the administration killed. As for China, their military power is beginning to catch up with their economy. Yeah, I understand that now - I thought you were advocating Iraq-style 'regime change'. But I do think any regime change would have to come from within. If there is proven outside involvement, it could easily start a war. If Chinas economy is crippled by those trade sanctions it may make them annoyed or panicky enough to at least consider supporting their economy through other means. That might mean grabbing natural resources elsewhere. They wouldn't start anything big - they're not stupid, but given their global status these days they certainly wouldn't just lie back and take it.
Deucalion Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 I'm not saying the US/SK won't win, but it would be a bloodbath before they did. The US and allies didn't manage to beat North Korea between 1950-53. If the North is seriously threatened, I don't doubt they would use nuclear weapons against civilian targets. Let's face it, it's all they could hope to hit with them. Not a nice prospect.

The United Nations forces were winning until China came in on the side of NK, I doubt that would happen this time.

21st Century Fox Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 This is a good article... http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/mar/29/could-north-korean-armageddon-happen One idea mooted would be to hit statues of the late leaders Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il, or their mausoleum. The symbolism would be potent.
Zingari Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 I've got to argue with someone have the missus and kids gone out then ?
Haydos Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 North Korea has the worst case of little-man syndrome I've ever seen.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 I can imagine that even China's patience is wearing thin. There they are (the Chinese) slowly taking over the world subtly with, ironically, finance and sheer numbers, when North Korea threatens to rock the nice comfy boat they've built themselves. North Korea is the little kid at school who's best mates with the school bully, but has got his willy out in front of everyone and the big bully says, "dude, put it away, you're an embarrassment!"

Their administration knows very well that their entire economy is based on making shit cheaply for the rest of the world. I understand completely South Korea's nervousness about the 'idle' threats ( as I see them). When you have 1 million foot soldiers about 50 miles from your capital... with reports from escaped North Korean soldiers of underground tunnels leading right to it.. the threats would be hard to ignore. Its no secret of the north's primary desire to ' unify' the Koreas... and its pretty obvious this would of been attempted by now had it not of been for the U.S's much appreciated ( by the south) presence in the area. Personally I think it is all an attempt to bring the U.S back to the negociating table and for sanctions to be eased... Although personally there is only so long I would let someone get away with the kind of threats Kim Jong-un is making before I decided that the best form of defence is attack.... Other than it being not a democracy here is a classic reason why dynastic succession can be such a bad idea..... you have a young clueless hot headed leader who is determined to make his daddy proud and do all the things that have been drilled into him for years and uphold the 'honor' and secure the legacy of his family name.

BoneDog Posted 31 March 2013 Posted 31 March 2013 Anybody who claims they don't want to see a big mushroom cloud before they kick the bucket is a sissy.. Rest assured that rogue elements within various 'intelligence' agencies are working hard to ensure you get to see one.
