Saxondale Posted 15 April 2013 Posted 15 April 2013 Did anybody else hear the story on Radio Leicester (sorry, I can't find a link to it online) about how Leicestershire's mobile speed camera people (the Ministry of Love) have decided that they're no longer going to put up signs to warn of possible speed cameras in order to """"save time and money""""? I.e. save the cost of a 10 pence cardboard sign and five seconds to zip tie it to a lamp post. One could argue that this is just a deeply cynical way to catch even more people. Especially as it may also be strongly argued that the mobile cameras tend to be positioned in places deliberated aiming to catch people in areas a) where the norm is to travel slightly above an inexplicably low speed limit and b) in such a way that they are concealed from oncoming traffic. These are of course just things people might think. And for those of you who are thinking of rolling out the "if you don't break the law, you won't get caught" wank, save the wear on your keyboard, because you're missing the point. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU! Thoughts?
ADK Posted 15 April 2013 Posted 15 April 2013 The thing that annoys me about the speeding fines is most of the money ends up going to the insurance companies who use it as an excuse to charge you higher insurance premiums.
Daggers Posted 15 April 2013 Posted 15 April 2013 One could argue that no one should have to warn you that breaking the law might result in you being caught and prosecuted. One might argue that bitching about it makes you a bit of a tit.

Thats a load of crap. Most of it goes to local governments and is used to improve road safety....

Or (like me) does it only apply to those that you personally agree with , not the ones you don't ?
Vlad the Fox Posted 16 April 2013 Posted 16 April 2013 I thought they had to have signs up by law??? Communication is the way, if people come across speed cameras text friends who might be in the area, (I used to do this) or post in forums such as this. Also, don't the mercury have a section advertising where the mobile cameras will be once a week?
Ross-Kemp Posted 16 April 2013 Posted 16 April 2013 Thats a load of crap. Most of it goes to local governments and is used to improve road safety.... No it doesn't, it sits in a government bank account. I've seen it.
flowwolf Posted 16 April 2013 Posted 16 April 2013 Once you own a car you are going to be financially raped at every turn. You become a cash cow to all and sundry. My advice to avoid speed cameras is buy a bike then you can ride on the pavements and scare the shit out of pensioners carrying home their shopping and come within an inch of hitting some mother with her toddlers. All the while sticking two fingers up too the speed cameras and law and order in general.
Fox92 Posted 16 April 2013 Posted 16 April 2013 More money then... It's about time they improved the roads. We all pay road tax, yet, there always seems to be potholes.
1964FOX Posted 16 April 2013 Posted 16 April 2013 Oh woe is me, I want to speed around every where and then be able to slow down for a few seconds as I pass speed camera. Using your own words, I think somebody is missing the point.
Parafox Posted 16 April 2013 Posted 16 April 2013 It's not big brother. Whilst I can see that for some, it's irritating to have these cameras around, they are for enforcment of the law. Just like security cameras or CCTV in the city centre. Ifsomeone was to kill or injure one of your family in a 30 zone or wherever, you would hope that some record of the event would be available to prosecute with.
Kyle_Le_Don Posted 16 April 2013 Posted 16 April 2013 You've got more chance surely then of killing someone if you don't get the warning of speed cameras than if they were there.

Using your own words, I think somebody is missing the point. Who said anything about wanting to speed round everywhere? I certainly don't, I'm all about the fuel economy these days. You've got more chance surely then of killing someone if you don't get the warning of speed cameras than if they were there. Exactly. If they actually just wanted to slow people down, they'd keep the signs that encourage people to slow down.
Parafox Posted 16 April 2013 Posted 16 April 2013 You've got more chance surely then of killing someone if you don't get the warning of speed cameras than if they were there. How so? If you need speed cameras (or warnings of speed cameras) to keep you to the limit then you're not the driver you like to think you are. If you drive within the law you shouldn't be concerned, warnings signs or not.
MooseBreath Posted 16 April 2013 Posted 16 April 2013 You'd have to be wilfully ignorant not to admit that a fair few speed characters are clearly placed for profit over safety. You'll often see speed cameras at the bottom of hills or soon after dramatic reductions in speed limit and almost always where they've found some tenuous excuse to drop the speed limit of a dual carriageway down to 40. I remember a lot of these roads before they put the cameras in and they weren't dangerous or accident prone. They've just dropped the limit and banged a camera in to try and make a bit of dosh.

Yes I can't argue with that.
