someone told me a huge population of homeless people are ex squadies.is that right?

Quite a few are. I would think that a few have been brought up in homes so are used to the army routine. Leave the army and can't adjust. Of course the are as many that do cope but the number shows that whatever causes it is not being addressed and they are not being noticed before it happens.. Even if its a small percentage it is too many.

Oh sorry Matt. My post wasn't directed entirely at you. I can understand where you are coming from sometimes but I can honestly say that the people I work with who have been through the system are decent people and none wanted their lives to be what it was.  They have made strides to improve their lives and now finding ways of helping others to improve or stop it happening.

Why can't they compete in the regular Olympics? I don't really understand the point of the deaf Olympics...

Don't know. Never thought of that. It's called sielent Olympics so some events they would be at a disadvantage if they cannot see the judges and they can only see the crowd cheer in sign language.

It probably raise awareness too but if the mainstream media do not pick up on it their voices are falling on.......

No I can't use that bad pun.

I'm going to go down and cheer on the GB football team.

Although I'm not sure in this case the crowd can claim to be the '12th Man'.

Pretty sure there would be easy ways around it. And it's not as if it would apply to most events anyway - things like gymnastics/javelin etc. you don't even need to be able to hear. To be honest, it probably means they're just not good enough to compete in the regular olympics - I doubt it has anything to do with their disability.

As it probably won't be covered by Sky or the Beeb I don't suppose most people will never know.

As an aside and I know some will question why it takes place but the Homeless World Cup starts on the 10th August. To understand why it is put on it helps to know the history. I can post a link nearer the time or maybe post in the General Sports.

Briefly but I cannot be sure of all the facts, it started at a National Conferance on homelessness across the world. Some of those there thought it a good idea if traing camps could be set up where homeless people could train and build up confidence and self esteem. And it's grown from there. Many players have taken up football professionally or gone on to help others.

England are ranked way down and Mexico and Brazil are top. Well they play on the beach in Brazil from an early age and where better to sleep if you have no home?

There are two Leicester lads selected for the England squad. It's in Poland this year. Would have liked to have gone in a repoting capacity but they won't pay my expenses. :)Money is raised by sponsorship and fundraising so nothing comes out of the normal budget.

Are you saying that having training for film making, photography, media work should not be there? Are you saying that videos giving out information to help people back to work should not be made. Are you also saying that these people that have had experience of homelessness, hostels and shared housing should not be allowed to tell their stories? Would you rather have a video of a Royal birth so tou wouldn't have to see the riff raff?

Just say the word and I won't post this type of story anymore.

The word.

Actually sounds like a good idea. 0 Hour contracts suck - they're almost a kind of limbo; you don't want to quit because you finally have a job (and you can't work another one on top incase the hours clash) but quite often you don't even get enough money to pay the bills.

I'd rather companies just employed less people and gave them more reliable hours then employ tons of underpaid people who'd have to claim benefits on top of it anyway.

A lot of the seasonal workers at Asda have zero hour contracts, usually students. When the bosses need someone to cover for someone and ring them up they are entitled to say no if they don't want to and often do. It works both ways.

Yes it is. Don't you think it strange that the Government  have been telling us the employment figures are going up yet they use a scheme which does not give a true figure.

OK the commons includes all MP's but it cannot be denied that zero contracts and part time work make for a huge part of the work force which in turn increases the number of people claiming benefits. Less money coming in or uncertainty of a regular wage causes a shortfall in income.

They're fine for students/people making a bit of money on the side, but they're awful when you have lots of bills to pay and it's your only source of income. Quite often you're better off just claiming JSA, which is ridiculous.

Yes especially that if you sign off you have to wait a week plus to get your money and if you don't know when you are working next it is difficult to budget if it is your only source of income.

I signed off the JSA three weeks ago and waiting for the switchover to pension credits. I've had no income other than 5 hours work since July 4th. I am lucky that I have a little to cover this months bills but if the delay is too long I may start to panic :)

They now have a backlog of benefit claims and appeals which makes things tougher for some claimants.

A lot more thought should go into the aftershock of doingthings. It is not the cuts but having no safety net in place that hurts when you hit the bottom of the pit.

Very sad. When you read about kids forced into marriage and motherhood, bringing up kids who have next to no chance of ever escaping real poverty, it really puts into context the problems people have in this country, don't you think?

This might interest some. It mentions The elephant man and being homeless.

No time to read it now so sorry if it bores you.

Could have been an ex-squaddie. Puts his life on the line, leaves because of stress comes home only to be pissed on by someone who has a dislike for anyone without a roof over their head. That is Britain today.

He had a roof over his head. He was in a little cove. I wouldn't have pissed on him had he been in the open. I'm not sick.
