Most of the easy to get oil and gas reserves have been tapped now, so technologies like fracking or drilling in sensitive areas (arctic regions) will be the next step. There's plenty of fossil fuels still out there. Poland has Europe's largest shale gas reserves (which Fracking is used to get). The north sea still has untapped reservoirs of heavy oil, which until recently has been difficult to get out of the ground as its like treacle and doesn't flow. I've bought shares in a few small companies drilling for these new reserves and will hopefully make a packet (or lose the lot  ;) !!) if this takes off.

Fracking is big business in the USA, lets hope it creates jobs and wealth over here.

It wont create rich farmers like it has in the US, becuase over here the State owns the resources under the ground, not the landowner.  So to the comments above about oil companies getting rich, yes they will make some money, but the UK owns the gas, so they will be buying it from us.  Also, who do you think owns the oil ompanies?  Got a pension??

Against, the gas you collect is shale gas which isn't really much use as a fuel source, it's a waste of money that could be better spent on either developing fusion or flattening france and covering it with solar panels.

I have a problem with this.  France is a beautiful country!  Now if you could work out a way to get the French to move somewhere else now THAT would be a campaign I could vote for!!

There's no point trying to ban fracking , it'll only get pushed deeper underground .

It's a boring subject.

I'm not voting on this, as I really don't know.  Would it really reduce gas prices for householders? I very much doubt it, as the Gas companies are sure to find a way round it, imo.

Got to be done I'm afraid.

I just hope it can be done with some kind of sensitivity to the environment.

Not so worried about Blackpool though, wouldn't be a great loss if it slid into the sea in my opinion !!   lol

Oi, some of us have to live there you know.

Certainly a contentious issue up here, would prefer the Government to concentrate on renewable energy. The ****ing horrific winds we get up here must be useful somehow.

I dunno but it'll certainly create more jobs

More jobs is often quoted but it's hard to prove, short term no doubt but this will in the main be very mechanically/automatically driven once it's set up and if they end up importing less oil then jobs will be lost there.

I don't see how, most merchant ships are staffed by foreigners. If it has to be refined it employs the same if it's British oil or foreign oil. There may be a few office jobs gone but the UK firms will need staff too.

The oil firms will have to pay the treasury for every barrel it produces and no clever accountant will be able to get around that.

So you are now getting cheaper gas to your house, however your house has been ruined by an earthquake caused by fracking, or maybe your wife was doing the washing up and highly flammable gas was present in the water.... You lit up a late night salmon and BANG!

Nice.

Can't just Frack the poorer areas?

I don't know much about it so unsure about it. Would you be happy if some was done in your backyard? Or anyone in favour in fact.

Yeah providing I can sell what comes out of it.

Me too.

I was not having a go at anyone. I don't think any fracking stuff could be put near to me anyway. I asked the question because there are people who say we need this or we need that or I dont mind if they come here but if it happens in their street they are the first on the protest line. Known collectivly as NIMBY's :)

Nice.

The earthquakes are so small you're not even going to feel them.

Gas coming out the sink taps was completely unrelated to fracking

'dialogue with local people’ lol

Since when did that have any impact on whether something like this should or shouldn't go ahead.

"Consultation'' the get out clause for every political party.

I like the fact that he was asked 10 times whether Cameron would want it near to where he lived and the question was avoided.

I think this would be the same tactic of a lot of MP's  though.
