Would anyone have taken 10 points from the first 5 league games?

Yes, absolutely.

The only thing that worries me, a little, is that it's ten points against mid-table sides.

Ultimate reality is that points are points. Very black & white view of it, but we all know we've suffered in the recent past against 'mid-table/lower-table sides' and come away with nothing. We're getting the points and at the end of the day that's really all that matters. Plus we have a track record of playing well against the so-called bigger sides in the league. We almost always somehow seem to pick up our performance against a fellow promotion favourite.

It's 10 points against mid-table sides which I am somewhat very happy about simply because in previous seasons it's 10 points we'd be wishing we had got as opposed to having on the board.

I was simply making the point that we have not yet played any of the 'better sides' (or the sides that I think will finish in the top 6).

I stand by my point and will pass further judgement when we see how we do against them.

If that is a black and white view on it, then I make no apologies.

I wasn't having a go mate. Merely just pointing out that even though we haven't played the 'better sides', it's kind of ironic that we can taken some confidence in knowing that sometimes we don't play well but still get 3 points. It may happen against the better sides/promotion rivals, and I won't care one iota.

Points first, performance second. :).

I'd have taken it but lets be honest:

Boro = shite

Charlton = shite

Birmingham = shite

Derby = mid table

Leeds = mid table

We've won two against shite which we made heavy weather of after conceding first and lost once.

We got a lucky (imo) win against Derby who are mid table and played out a bore draw against Leeds (mid table) at home.

I'd like to see how we fare against stronger squads.

Yes. Forest got off to a flyer and lots of people were raving about them. We've had different results but are now level on points so its not that bad.

I do fear however that the opposite of last season will happen. Playing poorly but mainly getting the points to eventually drop off the boil.We were always gonna lose some games obviously, I hate losing hence why I've not been on here today but it was always gonna happen.

Yes I would - but performing the way we are, there is categorically no way on earth we will average two points a game. Improvement needed.

Agree, beating teams like these is what a good mid table side would do, I am happy with the points return, but some making statements like two points a game is promotion form, ok it is, but can only be used if we have an average of two points a game against the top teams, and not after 5 games against poor to average sides.

See what our average points total is at Christmas, and then ask the op original question again.

Surely it's best to start off with 2 points a game and not play catch-up later on in the season?!

Some members' logic is baffling sometimes. Truly baffling. I bet if we had 15 points right now you'd still all be complaining.

I know what you mean col.

But after 5 games no one is really top middle or botom of the table.

The table will take shape after about 10 games and we could find we have played the top 8 by then.

Bolton are bottom after 5 games and really don't expect them to finish anywhere near bottom.

Still early days to say we have played mid table side when come the end of the season they could all be top 6.

I'll take ten from every five we play thank you very much.

Am I complaining, read all post not just a comment to somebody else's, I have stated 10 from 15 is good, but in reply to a post that has said we have played poor/ average sides, the point I made is, yes 10 from 15 is good, but to suggest that it's promotion form after playing these sides is as laughable, so I suggested that at Christmas, after we have played everyone once, ask the question again, and then if we are averaging two points a game it would be promotion form, I doubt we will as I think we have rode our luck up till now, but none of us know how it will play out, just stating my opinion.

So think about your sarcastic comments before you post them, as clearly you are making assumption on what I am thinking.

If we continue to average 2 points a game, we'll be on 92 in May. That is absolutely nailed on promotion, probably as champions.

So yes, I'd have snapped your hand off for 10 points from 15 at the start of the season. We're just waiting for the performances to improve now, the last thing we need is to lose two or three on the spin with an excellent Wigan side and potentially tough Blackburn side to play.

Our start to the season has been better than I expected. Without a doubt.

To pick up two away wins already gives me more confidence than I had with our away form last season.

We are a 'typical' Pearson side. Pretty solid, disciplined, and grinding down the opposition.

However, we certainly do lack flair. We lack that type of player who with a slide-rule pass, can change the course of a game. Knocky can do this, but he doesn't appear to 'fit' into Pearson's tactical set-ups at present.

I'm happy with the new signing. I think he'll be able to control the midfield area when we are losing that battle in the middle of the park, especially away from home.

However.... Something still niggles me a little. We don't seem to be playing 'well' in terms of really controlling games and creating many chances.

I revert to my previous point... It will be interesting to see how we now get on against the stronger teams in the division. In theory, the likes of Wigan, QPR and the like should provide stronger opposition than the teams we've played so far.

Fair play to those who say that it doesn't matter who we've played and 'points are points'. This is true and, so far, we've passed the test to some extent. But I'd feel happier if we looked as though we were playing better and I still believe the real test is yet to come. If we can look good and beat some of the better sides, coming up, then I'll start thinking we've got a real good chance this season.

In summary though, well done to Pearson so far because our start is certainly positive. I mean, who'd be a Bolton fan at present...

Would people rather start the season like we did last year? Battering teams but not able to convert our dominance into goals, points are points you can't argue with that, we've not performed as well as we can but don't worry we will. I'd much rather have points on the board playing poorly than playing well and not.

Hopefully we'll improve and reach the level of performance that will be able to beat the better teams in the league and I'm glad that we've accumulated points against the average sides to allow for us to build up to the more difficult games.
