indierich06 Posted 20 September 2013 Posted 20 September 2013 Maybe you've missed the actual point. This chap wouldn't have been donated $100,000 if he'd not have done a good deed. Surely if they've got money to donate when someone has done something, they'd have it if he hadn't have done so? Exactly. Plus the article states that people were willing to donate clothes, computers etc - well why not donate them to a homeless charity? It's great this bloke is being helped out, but giving one homeless person in excess of $100,000 won't do anywhere near as much good as donating $100,000 to the shelter in his town would. Things like this are not addressing the wider homeless problem at all, and while it's a good thing that this could help get a man back on his feet, what about the other faceless homeless people who need help, who don't have a media-friendly story or a donations page set up for them? The problem is that people donating will think 'yeah, I've helped with the homeless issue - I've helped this guy back on his feet' but the money, effort and resources being put into helping one man would be far better used helping to adress the wider issue.
Rincewind Posted 20 September 2013 Posted 20 September 2013 Yep that's about it. This bloke will probably be able to find a decent house and be comfortable for a while. He doesn't appear to be one that would waste the money ut he will still have the illness and no job. He may be OK though but there are still others out there. We don't know if he himself will give some back to a charity or even the hostel he has been living in. He must have made friends there. Being in a hostel is not like sleeping rough. There are often no alcohol/drugs rules (in the UK anyway) so the majority could be like him.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 21 September 2013 Posted 21 September 2013 I suppose I used to think that I would never be homeless becuase I would also have family to fall back on, and I wonder why other people do not. When you consider though that mental ilness in particular can be very hard to handle for family members it starts to make more sense. Those suffering from mental ilness are often not able to access services even if they are available. Are you well?
Rincewind Posted 21 September 2013 Posted 21 September 2013 Are you well? Seems a sane statement to me.
MooseBreath Posted 21 September 2013 Posted 21 September 2013 So all homeless people are mentally ill?
ADK Posted 21 September 2013 Author Posted 21 September 2013 I reckon a lot are. As you said it yourself a sane person would make use of the generous welfare state.
The Doctor Posted 21 September 2013 Posted 21 September 2013 I reckon a lot are. As you said it yourself a sane person would make use of the generous welfare state. Eh, not that simple - council housing waiting lists can have you waiting for quite a while depending on where you are, when you've got no address a paper trail back and forth isn't exactly possible (bear in mind a lot of benefits are means-tested). The view that the welfare state is essentially "they look poor, take all this money and housing" is ridiculously overly-simplified. Having said that, I'd be interested to see the percentage of homeless people who would be considered alcoholics or drug addicts, I suspect that a fair majority would have some sort of problems that have helped drag them so low.
Rincewind Posted 21 September 2013 Posted 21 September 2013 Have you read the blog A Girk Called Jack? The biggest reason for people visiting foodbanks is kate payments caused through 'Administrative errors' by the DWP or housing office. It happened tp jack Monroe and from recent stats it has happened to others. If you believe that the DWP and Housing do not make mistakes and are perfect then by all means call me a liar.
MPH Posted 22 September 2013 Posted 22 September 2013 The simple fact that people can turn someone's honesty and other people's generosity into anything negative only shows how messed up people are. Nothing else.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 22 September 2013 Posted 22 September 2013 Of course that is what he means. Ken has convinced himself that people are on the streets are better than those who are not. He is like someone who only has their pets for company who convinces himself dogs are better than people. I love the fact that the Mail has to put HONEST homeless man. Like homeless people are by definition criminals and this guy is an exception. You wouldn't want a feel good story to interfere with your long held stereotypes would you!! Dogs ARE better than people,Jon. A rather daft statement from someone I greatly respect.
Webbo Posted 22 September 2013 Posted 22 September 2013 Dogs ARE better than people,Jon. A rather daft statement from someone I greatly respect. You're barking.
Guest MattP Posted 23 September 2013 Posted 23 September 2013 Ended up being given a fake tenner at some point on Saturday so gave that to a tramp.
