MooseBreath Posted 26 September 2013 Author Posted 26 September 2013 I would imagine they recognize that these things snowball very quickly in the social media age and that it's a hot topic these days. I do think anyone outraged enough by the outfits to complain needs to get a life but I feel equal bemusement towards individuals who are outraged by their withdrawal. I'm outraged on principle, compounded by the apparent erosion of common sense, with a side helping of fear caused by what we might call 'the tyranny of the the weird little fvcks who never leave their basement but who can now make an impact on the world by joining together with other weird little fvcks and shouting really loudly over social media'. Catchy, I know.
Guest MattP Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 I would imagine they recognize that these things snowball very quickly in the social media age and that it's a hot topic these days. I do think anyone outraged enough by the outfits to complain needs to get a life but I feel equal bemusement towards individuals who are outraged by their withdrawal. I think what pisses people off is this small minority of people who always seem to take it upon themselves to decide what's decent for the public and what isn't. Had these been on sale 99% of people would have walked past it and not give two hoots but just because Paul Farmer, 'Chief Executive of Mind' thinks this is way beyond the line of acceptability he will use the media, facebook, twitter etc to rally all his goons and put pressure on them to remove it. People should be allowed to make up their own minds, if people find it disgusting they won't buy it, it's morons like this who seek to go around enforcing their own moral code on the people of the country that get my back up. And for what's worth I think Halloween is USA enforced shit and never do anything for it.
Finnegan Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 Do you not think the head of a major mental health charity has a responsibility to his millions of donors and backers to question whether or not a leading retailer should be reinforcing the connection between mental health patients and violent crime? It's not exactly like he's some Guardian reading letter writer getting their knickers in a twist because they feel they should. Mind do a lot of good work and, from what I've read on this forum over the last two years, it seems the majority of people want to see more awareness for mental health, with depression leading the charge. You can't then expect an enormous pair of institutions like that to get away with undermining that without groups like Mind raising an eyebrow. It's only because "political correctness gone mad" has become the favourite phrase of a generation that bemoaning Tesco and ASDA's shame has become fashionable.
Mike Oxlong Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 The world's gone mad. Next they'll ban the sale of my favourite tuna. You know the one I mean.

Ban witches costumes because of a feminist group doesn't want the link between that and witches? Slutty Nurse outfits? Do these people really think looking at a Psycho costume means people are going to start making a connection with that and mental health? It's a bit of fun for some people. We're going to need to take every Hollywood film off the shelves soon, No Goodfellas or Godfather, we can't have that reinforcing the connection between Organised Crime and Italians. American Psycho obviously has to go according to MIND. Give people an inch and they take a mile and the pressure to remove things like this is getting more and more ridiculous by the year.
MooseBreath Posted 26 September 2013 Author Posted 26 September 2013 Pretty sure I can remember them being on sale last year too. And every year for that matter. The chief exec of Mind sounds like someone trying to justify his salary. His minions are just a crock of shite. They should be heaped into a big tank and set on fire.
Finnegan Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 But they aren't saying any of that. They're just objecting because it was called mental patient. Like I said, if they called the costume anything else it wouldn't really have even been noticed. You've probably been able to buy costumes like that for years, just not with such an obviously stupid name. If you suddenly brought our a witch costume and called it loony feminist then, yes, you probably WOULD get complaints. Just the same as if you suddenly rebranded all your lumberjack outfits "diesel dyke." I'm not disagreeing that being outraged by it all is dumb as fvck, I too hate preachy morons who need to complain about everything, I just can't stand people that jump on the OTHER bandwagon either: "omg, pc gone mad wtffff!" Banning baa baa black sheep is PC gone mad, this isn't.
Guest MattP Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 Should just rename them and reshelf. Be easier wouldn;t it? "Normal office worker killer costume" "The down and out Halloween Strangler" "Scary DNO knife wielding do-gooder" Well done to MIND, 25k each by the looks of it, not a bad return for a bit of phony outrage, wonder if he's on a bonus.

Ps: I love that you complain about Ken bringing up DNO in 50% of the threads on FT but then do your best to cram it in every one he missed.

The God Emperor Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 I for one welcome our new social justice warrior masters. I cant wait till we are all waling around in our half black half white jumpsuits and referring to each other using gender neutral terms. of course we'll have to have our daily bad thought purging by the thought police and we can enjoy listening to speeches from our premieress in the evenings, who we elect through reality tv. joking aside it was a stupid thing to name the costumes, especially in this day and age when people define themselves by whatever victimhood they can find.
