bovril Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 I love how whenever one of these stories comes out a bunch of white, heterosexual, mostly-atheist, physically and mentally able men take it upon themselves to judge what everyone else should and shouldn't take offense to. Maybe if they had brought out a '38 year old 13 stone on 28 grand has season ticket for Leicester likes Homeland' outfit you'd all be frothing at the mouth to ban it!! But, yeah, seems a bit much to withdraw it.
Rincewind Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 Did you see the description though? Per Stan it was something like "you will run in fear as this mental patient comes at you! Complete with bloodstained clothing..." Not the best ever idea on the side of the supermarkets was it? I know they were thinking Michael Myers, but there is enough stigma against mental illness without taking the piss. They deserve to be called out on it and if they decided to apologise and remove from sale that is their call - no one is banning it. That is stupid how they described it. Not all mental illness is related to axe wielders. Anyone seeing that who is having treatment for depression or maybe paranoia could be affected as would their young children. Another idea with no thought going in to it. All they need do is come up with a better description.
Guest MattP Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 Not all mental illness is related to axe wielders. I'm glad we have cleared up that one. If I was a bigot I'd probably say "Not all psychos are axe weilders, but most axe wielders are psychos"
bovril Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 Shite just realised I said "frothing at the mouth". I'm going to have to ban myself now.
21st Century Fox Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 Most axe wielders are lumberjacks surely.
Finnegan Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 I've just found a really fun game, actually. If you read this forum imagining MooseBreath as Pierce Hawthorn it suddenly becomes a much more amusing experience. Especially the deeply disturbing sexual rants.

There are a few like that, a certain someone sounds brilliant with a Ricky Tomlinson voice. And Captain Pancake Face sounds brilliant as Alan Partridge.

I don't watch it. But I now see what you mean. Pierce Hawthorne: I know a few moves. Troy, I assume you're handy with a switchblade. Abed, you get back to the family tent. Try to find a chicken for Jeff to chase.
Finnegan Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 There are a few like that, a certain someone sounds brilliant with a Ricky Tomlinson voice. And Captain Pancake Face sounds brilliant as Alan Partridge. I know exactly who you mean. .... Webbo, right?
Rincewind Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 No he probably means me. I'm deeply honoured again

You've always been a slightly higher pitched version of Aled from the Chris moyles show for me
MPH Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 As an aside, though, what idiot named them? If they just labelled them as "horror villain" or some crap nobody would bat an eyelid. Surely the marketting departments at major stores like Tesco and ASDA should see shitstorms like this a mile off? definitely the name and description that has offended people like you said " horror film costume" would not of caused an issue...
Zingari Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 When i saw the costume I thought it was my local butcher, Hilary Briss
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 I am being treated for depression at the moment. One of the reasons for my self harming that is happening again. It's time this sort of demeaning and insulting marketing was stopped. It is highly offensive to the extreme, especially more so for those who are incurable. What if they did the same for cancer patients?
Finnegan Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 What if they did the same for cancer patients? You'd never fit in an I.V. stand in one of those little costume bags.

Surely the marketting departments at major stores like Tesco and ASDA should see shitstorms like this a mile off? To be fair to Asda, I think there's been a bit of Chinese whispers going on. As far as I understand it, the outfit was labelled both instore and in most references online by some harmless generic title. There was just one reference to it online as a 'mental patient' costume, which seems to have slipped to through the net. It seems to have been more of an administrative error than a marketing cock-up per se.
Zingari Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 They should have just changed it from mental patient to dental patient. I think I looked a bit like that when i had my compacted wisdoms out
Rincewind Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 There is a sticky thread raising Money for Mind. Just a thought. TBH If I had seen them I may not have associated any connection. But if if it was somebody that worked on a daily basis with people with mental issues they may encounter remarks similar many times during a day. So for them it would be unacceptable. Guy Fawkes night is coming up? Wasn't he a Roman Catholic? (or do I have it the wrong way round which will invalidate my point and you can ignore it) what if models of him were sold with a placard Burn an Irish Terrorist; I'm becoming tired. I think Bornblue is right the story has been misunderstood and probably not as bad as it sounds. I don't go in Asda anyway and not to that section so I can't be offended.
ADK Posted 26 September 2013 Posted 26 September 2013 Not sure why people care so much. I think Mind are justified in their stance. The fact that Halloween involves a lot of children makes this worse as they are more vulnerable to learning to stigmatise things.
