don't be silly CF, there'll be plenty of suggestions that will be sensible, but without any inkling of what investment is available, storage, or what particular special knowledge his mam actually has, it'll be very difficult to offer realistic solutions

Unless you can get a good supplier e-bay isn't that great for selling stuff, you get charged to place a listing, unless it is 99p auction and they take a cut. The amount of hassle to create the listing, monitor it, answer questions, post each item out, depending on post office queues you could be spending an hour of your life to make a couple of quid.

It works for flogging off shit you've got hanging around the house that you have no use for any more to make a bit of cash, but unless you can get something cheap, which normally means sourcing it from abroad so paying to transport it and paying import tax. Anything speicalist and collectible seems to go for a pittance on e-bay too.

But if your Mum is serious about it, then look for something that she has knowledge and experience of, so she will know if it is a good price and what it sells for, or look for a way she can add value, by some cheap mugs or t-shirts print a unique design on it, I don't know if she has a creative side, I remember a guy who posted on here about his little business turning old football shirts into cushions or look for a local business that she can support buying things at cost and selling them on or selling things on comission, the problem with that is most small businesses will already be selling on e-bay.

The internet is great if you have a business idea, but you still need a business plan, and a reason for someone to pay you more than what you bought it for taking into account the time and effort to sell it.

I would recommend just scouting around the house and seeing what you have, then have a look on e-bay see what it has been selling for, you can choose to see only completed listings, and see if it is worth selling it, I've sold shoes, toys, diecast models, even a suction shower bracket, everything sells in the end, but it has always been at a loss compared to what I paid for it originally, but it was profit seeing as I had no further use for it.

Living here in the states makes me miss certain English foods. Like jaffa cakes.. and birds custard powder. There may be some already... but an ex pats shop where no matter where they are in the world they can just go and order their favorite stuff online could be a nice earner....

My uncle has lived in Boston for many years & every time I visit, I have to fill the suitcase with Colmans mustard.  He loves the stuff, but it's got to be Colmans & not the powdered stuff.

I lived in Boston, and there are loads of Irish/English shops, if you know where to look. You'll pay loads what you want. Sounds like you are his mustard mule.  lol
