Never had this before and new years eve morning woke up with a bad throat.

By the evening my throat had completely closed up. Never felt pain like it. Couldn't go out and by 9pm i was aching all over and had a severe fever. Went to bed and basically couldnt get out till today. Went to docs who gave me antibiotics and dissolveable co-codomal to gargle with. Made me gip but now Feel really fluffy and no pain at all.

Was worst than when i had swine flu. Thought i was gonna die. Lost about 6 pounds in 3 days as cannot eat.

How long will this last?

I'm sure you know this but don't stop taking the antibiotics even though you feel better.

Not taking antibiotics exactly as prescribed also leads to problems. For example, if you take an antibiotic for only a few days — instead of the full course — the antibiotic may wipe out some, but not all, of the bacteria. The surviving bacteria become more resistant and can be spread to other people. When bacteria become resistant to first line treatments, the risk of complications and death is increased.

I had it around 3months ago. Genuinely awful.

Instead of listening to the doctor I took the antibiotics for only 5/6 days, had a couple off days off from it as I decided going out on the piss with the lads was more important lol

That came back to bite me on the arse as I had to go back for more pills.

I felt like shite for the first 4 days of it, bed bound for most of it. My throat was a complete mess.

My bout lasted about 5 days. A week off work, and lots of ice cream and bananas

I absolutely hate it, I find the frustration of being ill more annoying than the actual illness itself though.

It should resolve completely within 10 days but you must take the antibiotics properly, it's very important. You could end up with a really nasty abscess if you don't finish the course.

Proper tonsillitis is really horrible, I had it when I was revising for my exams (the irony of the student doctor being poorly when revising about diseases). The swinging fever is just awful, cold to hot to cold again. I'd never known anything like it.

You won't need your tonsils out unless you have tonsillitis more than 7 times in a year, so don't worry about that.

They use to take them out at will in the early 90s. I'm sure I only had it about twice and they couldn't wait to get their scalpel in me.

Aye, they changed the guidelines, far too much unnecessary surgery.

2nd day on the antibiotics and still no change, how long do they take to work ?

Totally agree with the swinging fever bit, horrible

Starving but cant even swallow liquids.... have resorted to spitting my spit into a cup as cant swallow even that without being in absolute agony for about 5 minutes afterwards

Shitting nothing but chimps fingers, does penicillin make your poo black?

Up to 10 days my friend, keep taking them! Remember you can take paracetamol regularly, 1g every 4 hours up to 4g a day, and you must do this too. Lots and lots of fluids, as much as you can drink, I recommend warm tea with honey and lemon in. Unless you know of a reason you can't take them, you can have ibuprofen as well, 400mg every 6 hours up to three times a day.

If you physically cannot drink, and you're becoming dehydrated, even after taking pain relief, give your GP/ local out-of-hours service a call.
