Unfortunately having visited the dentist today the only option is a removal. Keen not to become a pirate I want to get the gap filled and I hear the a dental implant is the best option (although most expensive). Apparently due to the curve of the roots, canal treatment is not a recomended option and bridging basically damages other healthy teeth. Anyone had an implant? I think I'm just going to get said tooth removed for now and then start thinking about it as an implant will be circa £2k.

Particularly places like Bulgaria etc. The UK is massively overpriced for this sort of thing. You will easily find going abroad will save you maybe 30-40% and thats including flights and hotel stops etc.

I need 4 new teeth really, one has completely shattered and i've had it removed and a temporary denture put in. Ideally I need 4 new top front ones and they are on about a bridge but i'm tempted to go abroad and get 4 new spankers done and all of them whitened.

I think I'm then going to wait until I can save the money to have it done in the UK. The tooth I need to have removed is the molar closest to the front of the mouth on my left side so at least it shouldn't look too obvious. If it was one of the front incisors it would be a nightmare! Re going abroad, I think it's something I'd be extremely hesitant to do...I can't necesarily explain why, I guess it would be just incase it didn't work out how I hoped. Steven - when you say check check and double check, what exactly would you be checking? To me every dental clinic that does implants will surely just have the same positive reviews etc. Also on prices, did you just get quotes?

I am having this done in Inverness at a dentist that has won all sorts of industry prizes. The whole setup from reception to x ray is very classy. It will cost me just over 2 grand by the time I have finished. You go several times. Your bone thickness has to be measured to see if an implant will take; if the bone is too thin you may have to consider other options. I was mid drill when he decided my bone was thinner than he expected from the 3D x-ray so he used some bone graft material. I did hear the assistant whisper "but that wasn't on his quote" to which the dentist replied, that's alright we will just leave it off the bill. I asked later, it would have been another £400 or so for just a smidge of bony filler stuff. Whitening - yes but your implant wont stain like ordinary teeth so you will have ongoing costs keeping the natural ones at the same colour as the fake one. UK dentists cant use the strong teeth whitening stuff nowadays. I had one visit for a quote, another for the drilling and implant of the holding bit. That is then left to bond to the bone before you go back for the fitting of the actual tooth. If you go abroad you get it all done in one day which is fine but the implant doesn't get to bond before you are putting pressure on the teeth and it can all fall off. Getting your money back from some central European dental clinic may not be that easy.
Woollett's Wellies Posted 25 February 2014 Posted 25 February 2014 Hi Archem. Yes. Having implants done in the U.K. can be very expensive but having them done abroad is like Russian roulette! I've had implants after having had bridge work which failed after some time, which it always does, unlike implants. It's really quite detailed surgery and you need a dentist who is really experienced in the field. What Orkneyfox says above is spot on for the actual procedure. I had mine done in Leicestershire by a guy who was recommended by my dentist because he teaches implant surgery to other dentists. He isn't cheap but would you rather have it done cheap or properly? It's as close to getting your real gnashers back as it can get. I had a dental plate for a while and I wouldn't want to go back there as they're bloody awful! I guess I'll get a bollocking from the moderators for advertising if I mention his name but if you PM me I'll let you know who it was if you're interested.

I got it done in Thailand and it was about half the price of a similar procedure in the UK or Europe (didn't look at Eastern Europe). Go to as many surgeons as possible, talk to people who have gone to that surgeon, check what the procedure involves and make sure that surgery follows the procedures. I found out that I should have x-rays, CAT scans, tooth removal, healing procedures, possible bone grafts and an implant plan to position the implants correctly. I finally found a place that did all of these things over a period of time that allowed for the previous piece of work the chance to succeed. Worry less about the money and more on the quality of the work. In short do your homework and make sure you feel comfortable with the person doing the work.

johnny the fox Posted 20 March 2014 Posted 20 March 2014 back in the day your mouth was a gold mine for a dentist, they would drill an fill even for a minor blemish, cos they got more money for it on the NHS system.. In my town not so long ago a practice was charging twice, private and NHS for the same patients to a massive extent. As said, check and double check who you are dealing with.
Rob1742 Posted 31 March 2014 Posted 31 March 2014 As what someone else said on here, make sure you have it done by the right dentist. Mine cost me about £2,600 in the end as I had a scan first. The scan showed the dentist the exact measurement between the gum and the nerve that needs to be avoided when they drill into your jaw. I think the scan was £500, maybe £250 I cannot fully remember but it was another insurance policy to ensure the job will be done correctly. Happy to recommend the guy who did mine. My own dentist recommended him and said it was his personal dentist and said he was one of the best in the UK. Recommendations will give you comfort. On another point, they are amazing. You just can't tell the implant versus your normal teeth. I would definately do it again. Also, despite them giving you painkillers etc, there is much less discomfort afterwards than a filling.

I got my dental implants from a clinic in Burlington and I must say that I had a good experience. I fell down from my home stairs and broke a couple of teeth and I didn't have any option other than dental implants and dentures. It was quite confusing choosing between implants and dentures as both has got its own advantages and disadvantages. Anyway, I don't regret getting the implants. I'm now a lot happier with my smile.

It was fine for the first 6 months then i took a knock on it and it came out, when they put it back in they shattered the bone around it causing me to have a massive infection. Since then it has been fine and I havent had any issues but if I had to go through this again i would 100% go private.

If something does go wrong, having to go abroad to get it looked at would be a right pain. I only have one implant, but had it checked the following week after it was done, then I think a month and two months later. Pick a dentist over here and I can recommend an amazing one.
