Anyone a referee?

Recommended Posts

Work is meaning I'm going to be able to regularly train and play less and less but I have often toyed with the idea of being a referee to keep me involved with the game.

I had a few questions for anyone that might be a ref:

1) Is there realistic progression opportunities  get involved at the semi-pro, pro level? I'm 27 now so is that too late?

2) Do you need to be available every week? Work means my availability is pretty inconsistent.

3) Do you get travel expenses alongside the match fee?

4) Looks as though the next basic course is in August. What kind of level could I expect to be refereeing at after this?

Someone on here has a mate who is one.....

Yeah DB11 is.

Might have to message him as I'm not sure if he posts regular still.

He's a moderator so he should and does post fairly often

Do it, it'll change your opinion of the game a lot!

27 is not too late. PL ref Neil Swarbrick didn't start until he was 29.

If you wanted to progress you'd probably have to be available for at the absolute least 2 weekends a month + midweek night games.

Not until you reach a decent level.

Any youth Football and Saturday/Sunday football like the North-Leics League, District League etc and running the line on the Senior League. You could be running the line at academy games, high standard womens league and even international tournaments.

Thanks Lionator, I will definitely look at attending the August course. I work a rotating shift pattern which will make availability hard, do you have to declare your availability each week or something?

You lot must be bonkers, getting up early on a Saturday or Sunday to be screamed at and abused by a load of semi-literate morons every week?

i used to find it quite fun. my favourite bit was when the parents/mates on the sideline started shouting shit. because they're always wrong and i was always right. and even if i might've been wrong i was the referee so i was right really.

Don't know about Saturday and Sunday, but I think AoWW does that from Monday to Friday.

Normally a month or so in advance.

Most of us on foxestalk are at least three quarters literate.

Qualify "most" and "three quarters".

I was referring to the fact she's a teacher over in Wetwang.

Yeah I am and I've been involved from a number of different perspetives; from a referee to a referee secretary and league committee member.

Yes there are realistic progression opportunities. You do now have to pay £30 to register your interest in getting promoted to the next level, which has put some people off. Level 7/6/5 are all parks level football and moving through the levels is straightforward because there's no competition you just have to be good enough. Level 4/3/2 is semi pro (4 - Senior League / Supply League, 3 - inbetween 4 and 2 whatever level that is, 2 - Conference). Level 1 is Football League and Select Group is Premier League. Beyond that is UEFA and FIFA.

For level 5/6/7 not at all. If you want to get promoted to the next level one of the criteria is referee 20 games a season (a referee season is April-March). From level 4 you have be committed

3) Do you get travel expenses alongside the match fee?

In Leicestershire, as a rule, no it's £30 flat fee (Leicestershire is the highest referee fee paying County in England or at least was last time figures were available). Other Counties it is fee plus mileage. If you get to level 4 it becomes regionalised so it is fee plus mileage - but that would be a few years away from qualifying and you'd be aware of the process by then.

Parks football. Adults or youth it's up to you. I don't know what your local league would be but it would be the same step/level as this one, which is what I referee on: http://nlfl.net/ http://full-time.thefa.com/Index.do?league=1474361
