Such a shame. No matter what picture you're looking at, that's an awful condition he's in. He appears at least 15 years older than 47 - in his face in particular. The receding hairline adds to that... :(

I do hope he pulls through and manages to stay sober and get his act together sooner than later.

Looks a bit better following his release from hospital, but I guess it'll only be a matter of time before he slips back on it unfortunately.

Paul Gascoigne 'collapses in pool of blood'

Paul Gascoigne has been rushed to hospital after reportedly checking into a health spa then collapsing "in a pool of blood".

The former England midfielder arrived at Champneys Forest Mere in Hampshire on Friday night in a "paralytic" state, according to The Sun.

After being led to his room by hotel staff, the 48-year-old allegedly attempted to order alcohol but his request was denied.

Gascoigne was then found in the early hours of Saturday morning "slumped over and stinking of booze" with blood pouring from his hand, where he had fallen on a piece of glass.

A spokeswoman for the South East Coast Ambulance Service confirmed that they had attended "a medical emergency" at the facility at 5am on Saturday, adding: "A man in his 40s was assessed and taken to hospital."

The former Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur star has battled with alcoholism for most of his adult life, as well as bulimia, OCD and bipolar disorder.

Can't help but think it's been sensationalised, I mean a 'pool of blood' from a cut on the hand but regardless anyway, sounds like he's back on the pop, shame.

Sad sight, as he has been for years. The media should refrain from using stories about him. It's cheap, unkind and unnecessary. The man clearly has problems and one just has to trust there's not a single youngster in the world so gullible or badly guided as to want to emulate him.

I see your point but doubt any "youngsters" want to emulate him.

They wont have watched him in his peak and probably see him as a sad old man who played in the old days.

Similar in many ways to George Best, this will end in tears

He's worse than Best ever was. Best kept some semblance of control.

I am actually amazed he's still alive at 48.

It's hard for him not to reject alcohol in certain situations.

I bet he's been given plenty of 'want a free beer' offers in pubs over the years, for example.

It's sad; but he's received both financial and personal help from legends within the game and, if he can't overcome it via them, what other answers are there?

He's beyond help it is quite clear. Only so much you can do before you've just got to let him get on with it.
